Lessons learned in the recruitment and retention of Black males in informal dementia caregiving research.

INTRODUCTION: Black American men are underrepresented in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease related dementias (AD/ADRD) research. This article aims to provide a framework for recruiting Black men in biomedical research, particularly for AD/ADRD caregiver studies. METHODS: We combined multiple recruitment strategies, both virtual, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in-person, that focused on a culturally informed community engagement approach. Through partnerships with local organizations, including faith-based groups, we developed recruitment strategies based on their expert recommend

Coalition of Faith Leaders, Community Organizations, and Governmental Organizations to Implement a COVID-19 Campaign in a Latino Neighborhood, Baltimore, Maryland, 2020-2021.

The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on low-income Latinos with limited access to health care services prompted the expansion of community-based COVID-19 services. From June 25, 2020, to May 20, 2021, we established a coalition of faith leaders, community organizations, and governmental organizations to implement a Spanish-language hotline and social media campaign that linked people to a COVID-19 testing site at a local church in a high-density Latino neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. This retrospective analysis compared the characteristics of Latinos accessing testing in community vers

Provision of faith-based services: challenges and opportunities.

Trusted for their legitimacy and track-record, faith-based organisations play a substantial role in the provision of sexual and reproductive health care as part of social services with emphasis on the disadvantaged. Religious imperatives may cause conflict through lack of alignment with government policies regarding selected aspects of rights-based programming: limited range of services, gender norms leading to exclusions and accountability. Nevertheless, their services are crucial to complement those of government in the global South. The long-standing lack of resources of faith-based organis

The perspectives of Lagos faith-institution leaders on health, hypertension, and faith-based hypertension interventions: a qualitative interview study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension remains a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality in Nigeria, where health system resources are constrained. Faith institutions wield considerable community influence and have supported previous health initiatives; however, their potential role in hypertension prevention and management remains critically understudied. This study explored the perspectives of faith-institution leaders in Lagos on health, hypertension, and the feasibility of faith-based interventions. METHODS: We purposively sampled eight diverse faith leaders representing Sunni Islam, Pentecost

Would God Forgive? Public Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders in Places of Worship.

Previous research has explored the impact of faith and religion on recidivism. However, it focused primarily on violent offenders, drug users, tax evaders, and so on. Missing is an examination of registered sex offenders (RSOs) and the role religion and religiosity play in facilitating reentry. Religiosity and religious organizations may play a role in increasing social bonds and reducing isolation in RSOs. In addition, being surrounded by a faith-based community could act as a catalyst for identity transformation from a RSO to a community member. Using a national online sample of U.S. adults,

Faith-based organisations in providing HIV services within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: To end the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by 2030, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) proposes that 95% of people living with HIV should be diagnosed, 95% of those with a diagnosis should be on treatment, and 95% of those on treatment should achieve viral suppression. To attain these targets, UNAIDS estimates that community-based HIV services should increase from 5% to 30%. Within low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), faith-based organisations (FBOs) often possess broad societal influence and extensive reach. Thus, many major AIDS organi

Paving the Way for an Integrated Care Model: Experiences of Women Living With HIV and Breast Cancer in Tanzania.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women globally. In sub-Saharan Africa, its impact is compounded by high HIV prevalence. Studies show that women living with HIV and BC (WLHIVBC) often present at advanced stages despite contact with HIV Care and Treatment Clinics. Little is known about their experiences in navigating both conditions. This study explored barriers and facilitators to integrated care for WLHIVBC in Tanzania to inform development of a patient-centered care model. METHODS: This qualitative study used a grounded theory approach, conducting 21

Effects of a Faith-Based, Multilevel Intervention on HIV-Related Stigma and HIV Knowledge Among African American Church-Affiliated Populations.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigmas contribute to HIV disparities, which faith-based organizations could address, but few studies have measured faith-based HIV intervention effects on HIV-related stigmas. METHODS: Taking It to the Pews (TIPS) is a multilevel, religiously tailored HIV prevention intervention developed and implemented with faith leaders. Over 12 months, trained church health liaisons implemented the TIPS Toolkit (e.g., HIV sermon guides and responsive readings, testimonials) with the primary aim of increasing HIV testing. A cluster randomized controlled trial with 14 predominantly

Altruism and Religion: A New Paradigm for Organ Donation.

Activity of NGO's supporting living donor kidney donations can affect the shortage of kidneys. Matnat Chaim is a Jewish orthodox organization active in Israel since 2009. This is a voluntary organization with aims to shorten and eliminate the waiting list for kidneys. Since the beginning of its activity, it has said to play a key role in 379 kidney transplantations. In 2015, out of 174 live donor kidney transplantations that took place in Israel, Matnat Chaim had a key role in 88 of them (50.6%). We found some ethical issues concerning the organization's activity. The donor can restrict his or

The influences of faith on illness representations and coping procedures of mental and cognitive health among aging Arab refugees: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Refugees experience higher rates of mental illness such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which are documented risk factors for dementia. Faith and spiritual practices have been shown to play a significant role in patients' understanding and coping with illness, however, this field of study among refugee populations remains lacking. This study aims to address this literature gap by examining the role of faith on mental health and cognitive health among Arab refugees resettled in Arab and Western countries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 61 Arab refugees

Using Root Cause Analysis and Occupational Safety Research to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse in Schools.

Significant progress has been made in the past two decades understanding how child molesters gain access to children and molest them while manipulating others to not get caught. However, incidents of child sexual abuse in schools by educators, and by other children, continue. This manuscript suggests that a comprehensive solution involves two components: (1) using root cause analysis methodology to systematically identify and integrate repetitive causes; (2) to use the findings from voluminous occupational safety research focusing on low-frequency but high-intensity events. Additionally, this

Setting the global research agenda for community-based HIV service delivery through the faith sector.

BACKGROUND: While leading AIDS organizations expect faith and health collaborations to play a crucial role in organizing and scaling up community-based HIV services, it is unclear how this can be realized. Little primary research has been conducted into which strategies for collaboration and service provision are most effective, efficient, scalable and sustainable. Seeking to align research with urgent needs, enhance coordination and increase the likelihood that results are used, this study aimed to set an inclusive global research agenda that reflects priority research questions from key stak

Assessing the effectiveness and implementation of a chronic disease self-management programme in faith-based organisations in Barbados: protocol for a cluster randomised parallel trial.

INTRODUCTION: In the COVID-19 environment of reduced patient interaction with the healthcare system, evidenced-based self-care of chronic disease is vital. We will evaluate the effect of an online chronic disease self-management programme (CDSMP) plus medication adherence tools on systolic blood pressure (SBP) (primary aim) and, seek to understand the barriers and facilitators to implementation of this modified CDSMP in faith-based organisations (FBOs) (secondary aim). METHODS: We will conduct an unblinded cluster randomised trial in FBOs throughout Barbados. Eligibility: Persons ages 35-70 y

Religion and Recovery Among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness.

Faith-based organizations provide essential recovery services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Research suggests that religion and spirituality aid recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, although less is known about these factors in homeless populations. This study used qualitative interviews to explore the role of religion in recovery from addiction in a sample of 14 adults with a history of homelessness. Analysis of emergent themes revealed that religion provided participants with a range of personal and social benefits, many which addressed personal, social, and tangible losses

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, North Carolina has seen its people come together in extraordinary ways, embodying the spirit of the "whole community" approach. This approach emphasizes the collaboration of various stakeholders, including local residents, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits, to enhance disaster response and recovery efforts. By involving everyone, it ensures that the diverse needs of the community are met efficiently. This collective effort fosters resilience and strengthens the community's ability to bounce back from adversity. This disaster, of biblical proportio

Community-Based Healthy Living Interventions.

In an environment in which most people have lifestyles that increase risk for initial or recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, community-based healthy lifestyle initiatives are highly effective in providing programs, education and support to reduce associated CVD risk factors and improve outcomes. Pioneering programs, such as the Stanford Three Community and Five Cities studies, and the North Karelia project in Finland, served as prototypes for current initiatives. These include partnerships with national organizations (e.g., YMCA DPP) and faith-based programs. Training may be provide
