Evaluation of Cardiac Size in the Common Kestrel ( Falco tinnunculus ) Based on Radiographic Measurements.

The common kestrel ( Falco tinnunculus ) is a common raptor found worldwide. To establish reference intervals for cardiac size by radiography, 14 adult common kestrels were evaluated clinically and with radiographs (lateral and ventrodorsal views). The cardiac width, thoracic width, distance between third and fourth ribs, synsacrum width, coracoid width, and distance between clavicle bones were measured on ventrodorsal radiographs. The ratio between cardiac width and the other 5 indices was calculated. Results showed a significant, positive correlation between the cardiac width and thoracic wi

Nimesulide poisoning in white-rumped vulture Gyps bengalensis in Gujarat, India.

Population of white-rumped vulture has not recovered in India to a desired level even after diclofenac was banned in 2006. During 2019, there were two known separate incidents of white-rumped vulture mortality involving four white-rumped vultures in Gujarat. After post-mortem examinations, tissues of all four vultures were received for toxicological investigation at the National Centre for Avian Ecotoxicology, SACON. Tissues were screened for a set of toxic pesticides, and none of them was at detectable level. Subsequently, the tissues were analysed for thirteen NSAIDs and paracetamol. Of all

Serum and Plasma Cholinesterase Activity in the Cape Griffon Vulture (Gyps coprotheres).

Vulture (Accipitridae) poisonings are a concern in South Africa, with hundreds of birds dying annually. Although some of these poisonings are accidental, there has been an increase in the number of intentional baiting of poached rhinoceros (Rhinocerotidae) and elephant (Elephantidae) carcasses to kill vultures that alert officials to poaching sites by circling overhead. The primary chemicals implicated are the organophosphorous and carbamate compounds. Although most poisoning events can be identified by dead vultures surrounding the scavenged carcass, weak birds are occasionally found and brou

Horner Syndrome in Birds of Prey.

Horner syndrome, which results from oculosympathetic denervation, has rarely been reported in birds. A retrospective study was conducted in a raptor rehabilitation program to gain further insight into Horner syndrome in birds. Data from 5128 live raptors admitted over 20 years were reviewed. Horner syndrome was identified in 22 individuals from 13 different species. Raptors from the orders Strigiformes, Accipitriformes, and Falconiformes were affected, with the last order being underrepresented. Ptosis of the upper eyelid was the most commonly reported clinical sign in the birds diagnosed with

Pentobarbital intoxication as a potential underlying cause for electrocution in a bearded vulture.

A bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) found dead in northern Spain presented external lesions consistent with electrocution as the cause of death. During forensic examination, macroscopic lesions suggested potential comorbidity, so samples were collected for molecular and toxicological analyses. Gastric content and liver were analysed for toxic substances, and pentobarbital (a common pharmaceutical used for euthanasia in domestic animals) was detected at a concentration of 37.3 and 0.05 µg/g, respectively. Other toxicological, viral and endoparasite analyses (avian malaria, avian influenza and

Retrobulbar Adenocarcinoma with Subconjunctival Extension in a Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

A free ranging, fledged common buzzard (Buteo buteo) was found with severe feather damage and left periorbital swelling. Clinical examination revealed a 3.0 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm left medial subconjunctival mass. The abnormal tissue extended over most of the left cornea, severely impairing the bird's vision in that eye. Additionally, the left globe was displaced in a temporal direction. Computed tomography revealed the origin of the mass to be retrobulbar tissue. An ultrasound examination of the mass found cystic areas, and a sanguineous fluid was aspirated. Cytological examination of the aspirated f

Gulper, ripper and scrapper: anatomy of the neck in three species of vultures.

The head-neck system of birds is a highly complex structure that performs a variety of demanding and competing tasks. Morphofunctional adaptations to feeding specializations have previously been identified in the head and neck, but performance is also influenced by other factors such as its phylogenetic history. In order to minimize the effects of this factor, we here analyzed the anatomy of three closely related vultures that distinctly differ in feeding strategy. Vultures, as obligate scavengers, have occupied a special ecological niche by exclusively feeding on carrion. However, competition

Increasing incidence of barbiturate intoxication in avian scavengers and mammals in Spain.

Pharmaceuticals are considered emerging contaminants in terms of impacts on wildlife. One chemical group of concern is euthanasia agents used in veterinary medicine. Here we present data on the occurrence of barbiturate intoxication using samples collected from 2004 to 2020 of suspected wildlife and domestic animal poisoning cases in Spain (n = 3210). Barbiturate intoxication was seen in 3.4% (45/1334) of the total number of confirmed intoxicated animals. Barbiturates were detected in 0.2% (1/448) of baits containing detectable poisons. The most frequently detected barbiturate was pentobarbita

Assessing Preference in a Paired-Stimulus Arrangement with Captive Vultures (Aegypius Monachus).

Vultures play an important role in our ecosystem by filtering out bacteria and viruses harmful to humans (e.g., rabies, botulism). However, many vultures remain in human care due to skill deficits and behavioral excesses, which can be treated using behavior-management practices that rely on effective (often edible) reinforcers. The current study replicated the forced-choice or paired-stimulus preference assessment with five birds of prey. Across all vultures, participants displayed a preference for animal (e.g., meat) over nonanimal stimuli (e.g., fruit), and mice meat was the most preferred e

Carotenoid coloration and health status of urban Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus).

As the world experiences rapid urban expansion, natural landscapes are being transformed into cities at an alarming rate. Consequently, urbanization is identified as one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, yet we lack a clear understanding of how urbanization affects free-living organisms. Urbanization leads to habitat fragmentation and increased impervious surfaces affecting for example availability and quality of food. Urbanization is also associated with increased pollution levels that can affect organisms directly, via ecophysiological constraints and indirectly by disrupt

Growing skull fracture in a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis).

Growing skull fractures have been reported in humans for many years, usually resulting from injury to the soft skull during the rapid growth period of an infant's life. Nestling raptors have thin, fragile skulls, a rapid growth rate, and compete aggressively for food items. Skull trauma may occur, which may lead to the development of a growing skull fracture. Growing skull fractures may be under-diagnosed in raptor rehabilitation facilities that do not have access to advanced technologic equipment. Three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomography was used to diagnose a growing skull fracture in a r

Digenean fauna in raptors from northeastern Argentina, with the description of a new species of Strigea (Digenea: Strigeidae).

The digenean fauna of six species of falconiform birds from northeastern Argentina is reported and a new species and several new hosts and geographical records are presented. Strigea proteolytica n. sp. (Strigeidae) is described from Buteogallus urubitinga and distinguished from their congeners by the combination of the following characters: plump body, conspicuous proteolytic gland, forebody with scarce vitelline glands, copulatory bursa with a well developed muscular ring (Ringnapf), and absence of true neck region in hindbody. Six previously known species are breifly described: Strigea falc

Upper respiratory tract infection caused by Cryptosporidium baileyi in three mixed-bred falcons (Falco rusticolus x Falco cherrug).

Three mixed-bred raptors (Falco rusticolus x Falco cherrug) from a German falcon breeder were presented with a history of respiratory distress. In one bird a laryngeal stridor was noted, and oral examination revealed an epiglottal swelling. In the other two birds, nasal discharge and sneezing were the main clinical symptoms. Nasal flushing samples and biopsies were collected for pathologic, bacteriologic, and parasitologic examination. Results confirmed a cryptosporidial infection. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA analysis identified the causative agent to be Cryptosporidium baileyi. No

Description and molecular data of a new cestode parasite, Cladotaenia anomala n. sp. (Paruterinidae) from the Australasian harrier (Circus approximans Peale) in New Zealand.

Currently comprising 12 species infecting the gastrointestinal tracts of diurnal raptors (Falconiformes, Accipitriformes), species of Cladotaenia are diagnosed by their branching uterus, testes in two fields reaching the same level anteriorly, and small rostellum armed with taenioid hooks arranged in two rows. In this study we describe a new species of Cladotaenia recovered from a number of Australasian harriers Circus approximans, from the southern half of South Island, New Zealand. The new species is distinguished from other species by its single circle of hooks. It is closest, morphological

Morphological Features of the Pecten Oculi in the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus).

This study aimed to investigate the macroscopic, light microscopic (LM) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) characteristics of the pecten oculi in common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus). A total of six eyeballs from three common kestrels were used as the study material. The examination revealed that the bulbus oculi was spherical in shape and its diameter exceeded the axial-global length. In the equatorial section of the eyeball, the pecten oculi were observed to be situated on the retina layer where the optic nerve enters the eyeball, showing a posterior-to-anterior distribution. Blood chemistry and health status of Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) nestlings.

Blood biochemistry offers reliable tools for assessing the physiological condition of wildlife populations, thus aiding their management and conservation. This study provides reference blood biochemistry values for free-living Eleonora's falcon nestlings based on 135 samples collected from 2018 to 2022 in an eastern Crete colony. Significant inter-annual differences in analytes highlight strong environmental effects. Albumin and glucose levels increased with age, whereas phosphorus decreased. Nestlings in better body condition showed higher globulin, calcium, and phosphorus concentrations but

Acute infection with Platynosomum illiciens (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae) as a clinically relevant and potentially fatal disease in Falco sparverius (Aves: Falconidae) in Brazil.

Platynosomum illiciens is a dicrocoeliid trematode from the biliary tract of warm-blooded vertebrates (felines, primates, marsupials, and birds) reported in different parts of the world. Although the veterinary relevance of platynosomosis in mammals, especially in domestic felines, has been increasingly evidenced in the scientific literature, studies involving avian disease caused by P. illiciens are comparatively scarce. In the present study, a female specimen of the American kestrel, Falco sparverius L., found dead, in November 2019, in Brazil, was necropsied. Parietal biliary effusion in th
