Cortisol Reactions During Family Conflict Discussions: Influences of Wives' and Husbands' Exposure to Family-of-Origin Aggression.

OBJECTIVE: Though family-of-origin aggression (FOA) is a known risk for later emotional and physical problems in adulthood, little is known about how early exposure to aggression influences physiological reactivity in the domain-specific context of family conflict experienced as an adult. This study investigates whether report of FOA influences spouses' hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses during conflict discussions with their family-of-procreation and also whether current hostilities, observed during a family discussion, moderate those responses. METHOD: In a sample of 91 fam

Work-Family Conflict, Parental Mental Health, and Children's Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Work-family conflict (WFC) is a common stressor for working parents and has been associated with poorer child adjustment. However, the mechanisms linking WFC to young children's emotional and behavioral difficulties remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether parental mental health mediates the association between WFC and children's emotional and behavioral difficulties in early childhood. METHODS: This quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted in Portugal with 313 parents of children aged 18-72 months. Parents completed validated self-report me

Family Conflict and Neighborhood Context in Latino Adolescent Depression: An ABCD Study.

Latino adolescents experience disproportionately high rates of depressive symptoms relative to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States, yet the multilevel factors shaping these disparities remain understudied. Family conflict is an important predictor of adolescent mental health, particularly within Latino communities where family relationships occupy a central role in social and emotional development. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study four-year follow-up (N = 1,796), we examined whether neighborhood social vulnerability moderated the associati

Does work-family conflict predict allostatic load? A 4-year longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: A growing number of studies have reported that occupational psychosocial factors increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Allostatic load (AL) is a main biological mechanism that explains the pathway from stress to disease. This study examined whether work-to-family conflict (WFC) and family-to-work conflict (FWC) at baseline would be associated with changes in the AL index (ALI) across four years. METHODS: We used the Midlife in Japan survey, Wave I, and the biomarker projects, Waves I and II. This study included 152 participants with paid jobs and variables of interest at bas

Children's Age, Family Conflict, and Children's HbA1c: Are Girls and Boys Different?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relation between children's sex, age, family conflict, and children's glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). METHODS: Parents of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus were recruited from the diabetes clinic of a midwestern children's hospital. The survey included demographics and the Diabetes Family Conflict Scale (DFCS). The index child's HbA1c was obtained. RESULTS: DFCS was significantly associated with HbA1c for both boys and girls (rs = 0.3, P < 0.001); however, girls had significantly higher median HbA1c levels (8.8) than boys (8.4, P = 0.003). Median HbA1

Family Conflict and Resilience in Parenting Self-Efficacy Among High-Risk Mothers.

Mothers with a history of institutional care in adolescence are often involved in high-conflict partner relationships, which may undermine relationships with children and confidence in oneself as a parent. Not all mothers think of themselves as bad parents under these circumstances. We turned to psychological resources as an explanation, focusing on mothers' trait self-control. The negative association between family conflict and parenting self-efficacy was tested for moderation by self-control among 104 mothers with a history of institutionalization for behavioral problems and delinquency dur

Pandemic Shadows: Unmasking Gender Disparities in Academic Productivity and Work-Family Conflict.

Women academics experience inequalities across multiple facets in the university context, including research productivity; teaching, advising and mentoring responsibilities; service workload; and cross-over stress between work and family obligations. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these gender disparities. Drawing upon 2021 data from 467 research faculty and staff at a lead research university in Canada, we highlight such inequalities. While descriptive statistics suggest that men and women report similar perceived setbacks in productivity due to COVID-19, results from structural equation m

Work-family conflict and mental health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Work-family conflict, defined as a type of inter-role conflict where demands from work and family roles are incompatible, is a global public health concern. Cross-sectional studies consistently demonstrate associations between work-family conflict and adverse mental health outcomes. However, longitudinal evidence remains mixed, highlighting the need for a comprehensive synthesis of available data to better understand its long-term impacts. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies of associations between work-family conflict a

Work-family conflict, overwork and mental health of female employees in China.

INTRODUCTION: The "Green Paper on the Mental Well-being of Chinese Career Women" indicates that around 85% of Career Women face mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and anger, with these issues being more common than in their male counterparts in China. Both work and family are identified as two major contributors to these problems. Utilizing Conservation of Resources theory, this paper examines work-family conflict and overwork as significant explanatory variables and develops a moderated mediation model to investigate the mechanisms affecting mental health issues among Chine

Relationship between work-family conflict and unhealthy eating: Does eating style matter?

There is increasing evidence to suggest that work-family conflict is implicated in poor eating patterns. Yet, the underlying mechanism remains unexplored. The objectives of the present study were to demonstrate the interplay between work-family conflict, eating style, and unhealthy eating, and to test whether body mass index (BMI) and its interactions further explicate the relationships. In this study, 586 Malaysian adults (normal weight n = 437, overweight n = 149) completed a questionnaire, which included demographic variables, work-family scales, eating style measures, namely, restrained, e

Examining the Aftermath of Work-Family Conflict Episodes: Internal Attributions, Self-Conscious Emotions, Family Engagement, and Well-Being.

Little empirical research exists on attributions that people make regarding work-family conflict that they experience. Our study used attribution theory to examine the aftermath of work-family conflict episodes. We used a diary method in which respondents reported their daily encounters with work-family conflict, attributions they made about its causes, feelings of guilt and shame they experienced, and their levels of daily family engagement and well-being after work. Based on Ilies et al. (2012) we hypothesized that internal attributions of work-family conflict would be associated with feelin

Putting theory to the test: examining family context, caregiver motivation, and conflict in the Family Check-Up model.

This study examined contextual factors (caregiver depression, family resources, ethnicity, and initial levels of youth problem behavior) related to the effectiveness of the Family Check-Up (FCU) and evaluated family processes as a mediator of FCU intervention response and adolescent antisocial behavior. We followed a sample of 180 ethnically diverse youths of families who engaged in the FCU intervention. Family data were collected as part of the FCU assessment, and youth data were collected over 4 years, from sixth through ninth grade. Findings indicated that caregiver depression and minority

Medical errors among nurses: understanding the impact of work-family conflict and burnout.

Medical errors remained a persistent challenge to patient safety and healthcare quality worldwide. This study examined the psychological predictors and underlying mechanisms associated with medical errors among nurses, focusing specifically on the effects of work-family conflict, work interference with family (WIF) and family interference with work (FIW), and the mediating role of burnout. A cross-sectional survey design was employed. Participants were 251 nurses (81 men, 170 women) working in public hospitals in Ondo State, Nigeria, aged between 31 and 52 years (M = 41.28, SD = 6.31). Temporal disorientation during war: associations with work-family conflict, emotional distress, and burnout.

INTRODUCTION: Disruptions in the temporal experience-such as subjective sense of time being long, short or distant compared to "objective" time-have been found in the context of extreme emotional events. This research, conducted a month after the start of the war in Israel, aimed to identify characteristics of temporal experience among a population facing ongoing crisis conditions, and to examine their relationship to emotional distress and burnout. Based on Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources Theory it was hypothesized that temporal disorientation is essentially the loss of a vital psychologi

Work-family conflict and strain: Revisiting theory, direction of causality, and longitudinal dynamism.

Does work-family conflict (WFC) cause psychological strain or vice versa? How long do these effects take to unfold? What is the role of persistent WFC (or strain) levels in these processes? Prior research has left some of these questions open: Our systematic review reveals that WFC-strain studies have primarily used short (e.g., hours) or long (e.g., years) measurement lags, leaving mid-long lags underexplored. Moreover, while many work-family theories imply long-term effects, prior longitudinal research has often relied on cross-lagged panel models that assume effects to be solely within-pers

Family conflict and depression in HIV-negative heterosexuals: the role of methamphetamine use.

Previous research has reported elevated levels of depressive symptoms among methamphetamine users, but little attention has been paid to possible links between family environment and psychological distress. This study examined relationships between family conflict, substance use, and depressive symptoms in a sample of 104 heterosexual methamphetamine users in San Diego, California. Eighty-nine percent of the sample reported conflict with a family member in the past year. Conflict was reported most often with parents and siblings. Sources of conflict included drug use, lifestyle issues, interpe
