Non-nurse college graduates: a new resource for future nurse practitioners.

Non-nurse college graduates are admitted to the master's of science in nursing (MSN) degree program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Over the years, a majority of these non-traditional students have chosen the family nurse practitioner clinical concentration. The purpose of this study was to compare non-traditional and traditional family nurse practitioner (FNP) graduates in terms of academic and career-development characteristics. The study population consisted of all 91 (48 non-traditional and 43 traditional) UTK FNP graduates from 1981 to 1986. Little difference was found be

A practical approach to obesity prevention: Healthy home habits.

Families have the potential to foster a healthy home environment aimed at reducing the risk of overweight and obesity. Establishing habits associated with reduced risk of obesity and overweight early in childhood can have lasting effects into adulthood. Nurse practitioners can encourage families to participate in healthy habits by addressing areas of growth for obesity prevention within the home. A review of the most recent literature, approximately over the past decade, was used to provide a consolidated source of reference for healthy home habits for the nurse practitioner. The search includ

This study describes the distribution of ARI diagnoses and specifically quantifies antibiotic dispensing for bronchitis and upper respiratory infection (URI) by treatment setting and specialty. METHODS: This retrospective, observational cross-sectional study used data from the HealthCore Integrated Research Environment containing claims from 14 commercial health plans for 2012 to 2014. Children (2-17 years) with first-episode ARI were identified by diagnosis of acute otitis media (AOM), sinu

Congenital syphilis: old disease, new resurgence.

The resurgence of syphilis has a detrimental effect on the health of communities and populations. As this epidemic continues, pediatric nurse practitioners may care for children with congenital syphilis. Children with congenital syphilis are at increased risk for physical abnormalities and developmental delays. Frequent physical and developmental assessments with goal-oriented plans will assist the child and family to achieve their maximum potential. Pediatric nurse practitioners who are knowledgeable about congenital syphilis, its manifestations, and associated nursing care needs will serve a

Collaborative Care (CC) is an evidence-based model incorporating an interdisciplinary team to improve outcomes for behavioral health disorders commonly seen by primary care providers. AIM: CC was implemented in a nurse-managed health center in a medically underserved community of Chicago with a team of family nurse practitioners, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, and a licensed clinical social worker. METHODS: Integration of t

Perceived effectiveness of HPV test as a primary screening modality among US providers.

BACKGROUND: The human papillomavirus (HPV) test, administered alone without the Papanicolaou (Pap) test, was recently recognized as a cervical cancer screening option in the United States by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the Food and Drug Administration has approved an HPV test for primary screening. METHODS: Surveys of US internists, family practitioners, nurse practitioners, and obstetrician-gynecologists were conducted in 2009 and 2012 to investigate providers' perceptions of the effectiveness of the HPV test adminis

A Nurse Practitioner service designed to address the health needs of children living in housing instability: A non-randomised, concurrent mixed methods study protocol.

UNLABELLED: In 2019-2020 we conducted a pilot study of a Nurse Practitioner clinic working with housing insecure children (0-18 years) that found high levels of developmental delay, missed immunizations and dental caries. This present non-randomized, concurrent mixed-methods study protocol explains the next phase of the research designed proving proof of concept for a Nurse Practitioner model of care for these vulnerable children. Focusing on identifying and understanding clinic admission processes, tracking referral pathways and uptake, and how many vulnerable children miss potential care and

Management of children with swallowing disorders.

Early diagnosis and treatment of feeding and swallowing problems may improve a child's health status and quality of life and reduce health care costs. Pediatric nurse practitioners have a salient role in the early diagnosis of children at risk for feeding and swallowing problems. Increased knowledge about the normal swallowing process, children at risk for feeding and swallowing disorders, and associated symptoms enhances early diagnosis and treatment. The child's general health history and physical evaluation, along with additional diagnostic tests, provide the basis for the formulation of an

Substitution of doctors by nurses in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Demand for primary care services has increased in developed countries due to population ageing, rising patient expectations, and reforms that shift care from hospitals to the community. At the same time, the supply of physicians is constrained and there is increasing pressure to contain costs. Shifting care from physicians to nurses is one possible response to these challenges. The expectation is that nurse-doctor substitution will reduce cost and physician workload while maintaining quality of care. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to evaluate the impact of doctor-nurse substitution in pr

Evaluating the genetic risk of breast cancer.

Progress genetics has endless implication for primary care and for people at risk for hereditary breast cancer. Nurse practitioners will be increasingly challenged to order and interpret genetic tests, provide genetic counseling, and assume responsibility for protecting patient privacy. Yet primary care practitioners may not be completely prepared to provide the necessary background information. This article provides guidelines for evaluating family history risk for inherited breast cancer risk. Also discussed are implications for presymptomatic testing of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes for adult-o
