Family perceptions of palliative care consultations for nursing home residents.

OBJECTIVES: Palliative care (PC) consultations, often facilitated by providers external to nursing homes (NHs), can reduce unwanted hospitalizations and improve decision-making and communication for nursing home (NH) residents. However, limited literature has documented the specific elements within PC consultations that drive positive outcomes. Given the critical role of family members, especially for residents with cognitive impairment, this study aimed to: (1) identify actions and interactions during recent PC consultation visits, and (2) summarize family perceptions of these visits. METHODS

Effects of the nursing mother-infant dyad on the family.

The voluminous literature on breast-feeding is characterized by a narrow, if not exclusive, focus on the mother-infant dyad. This paper describes how the dynamics of the nursing couple can best be understood within the broader context of the family. One father's conflictual reactions to breast-feeding, and the subsequent effects on his nursing wife, are described.

Biological risk in nursing care provided in family health units.

There is very frequent exposure to potentially contaminated material in procedures performed by nursing professionals. This exploratory and descriptive study characterizes the potential risk of biological exposure in procedures performed by nursing professionals in ten Family Health units in São Carlos-SP, Brazil. We observed 238 procedures involving potential risk of contact with biological material, in which more than 90% involved the use of needles. The average rates of adherence to standard precautions were: 27.9% hand washing prior to procedures; 41.4% use of gloves; and 88.8% adequate di

Family transition through the termination of private duty home care nursing.

Health care professionals prepare families for discharge and for home care, but termination of home care nursing has been approached less methodically. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the experience of transition occurring with termination of private duty home nursing care for the families of technology-dependent children. The research question guiding this proposal was: How do families experience the transition from continuous home nursing care through termination of that care? This article will discuss the adjustments and preparations required by termination, families

Family Nursing Interventions in Adult Acute Care: Systematic Review of Effectiveness.

Hospitalizations significantly affect families' health. This systematic review of effectiveness without meta-analysis, following Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, aimed to synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of family nursing interventions on patient, family, and nurse outcomes among adults admitted to acute care facilities. The included studies were published in English, French, or Portuguese and measured the effectiveness of nurse-led family interventions on patient, family, and nurse outcomes. CINAHL, PubMed, ProQuest, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and two trial registries were systematically se

"Family-as-Root" and "Family-Centeredness" in hospice care: a concept analysis and implications for nursing practice.

BACKGROUND: Families are widely recognised as central actors in hospice and palliative care, and “family-centered care” has become a dominant practice model. However, the ontological and axiological status of the family in many cultural contexts—particularly East Asian Confucian traditions—extends far beyond the functional roles usually described by family-centeredness. This study conceptualizes and clarifies “Family-as-Root” - a culturally grounded, ontological-axiological orientation to family that is widely recognizable in Chinese contexts but remains under-theorized in international hospic

Correctional nurses' practices and perceptions of family engagement.

BACKGROUND: In healthcare, family engagement has been recognized as critical to improved nursing care and outcomes. However, the practice of family engagement in corrections is unknown, despite the large amount of nursing care delivered there. PURPOSE: The study's aim was to describe correctional nurses' perceptions of family engagement and the extent to which it is practiced. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive study design was used, composed of semistructured interviews. Thematic analysis was conducted, including line-by-line coding. DISCUSSION: The main themes of the study were: (a) Family

Prenatal behavior of multiples: implications for families and nurses.

Each twin and higher order multiple leads an extraordinary life before birth. The literature has revealed that the intrauterine environment differs for every multiple fetus and helps to shape the individuality of each multiple-birth child. From early in pregnancy, it appears that a multiple develops his or her own temperament and each set of multiples establishes an individualized pattern of tactile communication between or among themselves. The same behaviors, traits, and intermultiple interactions seen in pregnancy also have been observed in infancy and beyond. Intermultiple communication co

International family-planning training for nurse practitioners.

Since the mid-1970s, the Margaret Sanger Center of Planned Parenthood of New York City has prepared nurses and nurse midwives from less developed countries to be family-planning nurse practitioners. These nurse practitioners then provide services to patients, train other staff, and manage integrated family-planning clinics. More than 120 nurses and nurse midwives have arrived in groups of 10 at the Sanger Center, with 72 attending since 1981. Each course lasts 10 weeks. The core curriculum provides trainees with skills in women's health care including contraception, in training and advocacy, a

Family Visits and Symptom Burden in Nursing Home Residents With Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Family visits with nursing home residents have been shown to improve residents' quality of life. However, little is known about the association between in-person family visits and physical (e.g., pain) and behavioral symptoms (e.g., agitation) among residents with cognitive impairment. Using data from a large clinical trial of a palliative care program in Maryland and Indiana, we examined the association between family visits and staff-reported resident symptom burden. METHODS: Using cross-sectional baseline data from an ongoing multi-state clinical trial involving 194 nursing hom

Constrained endurance in long-term family caregiving: Rethinking resilience through nursing ethics.

Resilience is an established concept in family-caregiver research, where it is used to describe how caregivers maintain functioning and adapt to sustained adversity. In long-term family care for older adults with disabilities, however, resilience is ethically ambiguous. Continued care may reflect adaptive capacity, relational commitment and caregiving competence, but it may also be shaped by dependency, moral obligation, cultural expectations and limited alternatives. This article critically examines the ethical implications of caregiver resilience and develops the concept of constrained endur

Nursing issues in caring for children with moyamoya vasculopathy and their families.

Moyamoya vasculopathy is a rare, progressive neurovascular condition that may cause recurrent transient ischemic attacks, ischemic strokes, hemorrhagic strokes, or neurologic decline in children. Children with moyamoya disease have no clear contributing etiology, but children with moyamoya syndrome have contributory diagnoses such as Down syndrome or neurofibromatosis. The concerns and lived experiences of children affected by this disease and their families have not been well explored or addressed in the nursing literature. Nurses who understand this lived experience increase their own knowle

Family practice nurse views on barriers to immunising children.

New Zealand (NZ) has low immunisation coverage for infants and children compared to many other westernised countries. Barriers to improving uptake are multifactorial, with health professional knowledge and attitudes identified as important modifiable factors. In NZ practice nurses give most childhood vaccinations in the primary health care setting. This study explored aspects of 150 family practice nurse views, knowledge and experience about immunisation. Qualitative and quantitative text data were obtained through randomised computer assisted telephone surveys and converged using a triangulat
