Supportive family members of diabetic adults.

OBJECTIVE: Family members usually become involved during the course of care for a chronic illness. This study identified the diabetic adult's perceived supportive family member(s) and analyzed whether family participation was associated with the diabetic adults' level of metabolic control. METHODS: A telephone survey of 131 diabetic adults was conducted from a family practice residency office asking patients to identify family members participating in their diabetes care and to enumerate specific support activities. Demographic and metabolic control data were abstracted from patient records.

Understanding and supporting families in the process of divorce.

The current U.S. divorce rate of 40 percent, involving a total of 12 million children under the age of 18, is a compelling factor for family health care providers. In working with families in the process of divorce, it is important to understand divorce as a series of events involving a period of transition. The process is complex and multifaceted, requiring the disintegration of one family structure and the reorganization of another. Children and adolescents will respond to the divorce of their parents contingent on their developmental levels, their temperaments and the amount and quality of

Childhood Stress, Loneliness, and Cardiovascular Diseases in Later Life: Does Family Support or Friend Support Matter?

This study investigates the associations between distinct childhood stressors (i.e., health threats, financial hardship, and interpersonal trauma) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in later life, with a focus on loneliness as a mediator and the moderating roles of family and friend support. Cross-sectional data were used in this study, including 5,007 Hong Kong residents aged 50 and above. CVD was assessed via self-reported diagnoses of heart diseases or stroke. All three childhood stressors were associated with increased CVD risk in old age, with loneliness significantly mediating these assoc

Peer Support and Family Peer Support Services in Coordinated Specialty Care Programmes in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The Early Psychosis Intervention Network (EPINET) funded by the National Institute of Mental Health includes 111 early psychosis programmes across the United States. This investigation examines the prevalence of peer support and family peer support within CSC programmes. We describe the settings in which peer support and family peer support are offered, as well as other contextual factors (such as policies and funding mechanisms) associated with offering peer support and family peer support. METHOD: A programme-level measure was used to capture services, the location of service del

A care ethical perspective on family caregiver burden and support.

Family care-when partners, relatives, or other proxies care for each other in case of illness, disability, or frailty-is increasingly considered an important pillar for the sustainability of care systems. For many people, taking on a caring role is self-evident. Especially in a palliative care context, however, family care can be challenging. Witnessing caregivers' challenges may prompt compassionate nurses to undertake actions to reduce burden by adjusting tasks or activities. Using a care ethical approach, this theoretical paper aims to provide nurses with an alternative perspective on careg

Family physicians' support for school-based HIV prevention education programs.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the extent to which family physicians support school-based education programs regarding the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Sexually active adolescents are at risk for infection with HIV. Education programs on HIV that target this vulnerable group effectively prevent infection, yet family physicians are often not directly involved in the design and implementation of such programs. DESIGN: A systematic random sample of 2660 members of the American Academy of Family Physicians was surveyed using a mailed questionnaire to assess clinical experiences with HIV disease, w

Family data support a dominant major gene for Tourette syndrome.

A dominant major gene was supported by analyses of 50 large extended Tourette syndrome (TS) pedigrees and by a subset of families defined by proband's clinical response to the neuroleptic drug haloperidol. Relatives were defined as affected if they ever had tics or TS. Assuming a nearly even sex ratio for TS and related symptoms resulted in the best fit of the genetic model to observed rates in families.

Family social support during incarceration: implications for health upon release.

Incarceration is associated with adverse physical and mental health that are often brought to light during reentry into the community, particularly in the immediate period following release. Social support, specifically from family members, has been identified as a key protective factor that may promote health and reintegration success among formerly incarcerated individuals. However, less is known about how specific types of family support-emotional and instrumental-relate to health outcomes following release from incarceration. The current study uses data from 517 individuals incarcerated in

Family stress model and social support among low-income families.

Mothers living in low-income families are more likely to experience depressive symptoms and parenting stress which in turn can undermine mother-child interactions adversely influencing child outcomes. Previous studies demonstrate that social support is beneficial for low-income mothers to fulfill caregiving responsibilities and promote positive child outcomes. However, the longitudinal application of the Family Stress Model with protective factors remains unexplored in the literature. Thus, we examined the association between parenting stress and depressive symptoms at year 1 with harsh and re

Utilization of Hospice Bereavement Support by At-Risk Family Members.

Approximately 10% of the bereaved are at risk of bereavement-related mental health disorders. Hospices' bereavement services could potentially address needs of many at risk, but little is known about their service use. We analyzed data from 6160 bereaved family members of hospice patients. Risk of mental health problems was identified by hospice providers postloss. Of those characterized as "at-risk," 52% used services compared to 18% of the "low risk." Factors associated with service use among at-risk were female gender and younger age of death. Those who lost a child used services less than

Family to work conflict and the usefulness of workplace support.

BACKGROUND: While much is known about the effect of work stress on an employee's home life, less is known about the opposite effect, that of domestic worries upon work performance. AIMS: To investigate employee perceptions about the effect of family to work conflict (FWC) on work. METHODS: An online anonymous survey tool was developed and sent to all employees reporting to a single onsite human resources (HR) department at a UK research and development plant. FWC included family and other domestic stressors. Work effects studied included those on business travel, work performance and the awa

Family Care Curriculum: A Parenting Support Program for Families Experiencing Homelessness.

Purpose In the United States, families with children characterize the fastest growing portion of the homeless population. Parenting for families experiencing homelessness presents unique challenges since families facing homelessness are disproportionately more likely to experience a myriad of interpersonal and contextual stressors that heighten the risk of parents engaging in suboptimal parenting approaches. This article describes the development and implementation of the Family Care Curriculum (FCC) train-the-trainer parenting support program specifically designed to support positive parentin

Supporting the Grieving Child and Family: Clinical Report.

The death of someone close to a child often has a profound and lifelong effect on the child and results in a range of both short- and long-term reactions. Pediatricians, within a patient-centered medical home, are in an excellent position to provide guidance to caregivers and to offer assistance and support to grieving children of all ages and their families. This clinical report offers practical suggestions on how to talk with grieving children to help them better understand what has happened and its implications. An understanding of guilt, shame, and other common reactions as well as an appr

Support groups for children and their families in pediatric dermatology.

Recent discussions regarding the burden of skin disease and patient-centered medicine highlight the profound effects skin disease can have on individuals, their families, and society as a whole. Local support groups, often connected to national patient advocacy groups, can be an invaluable resource for patients, and offer physicians the opportunity to learn more about patients' disease experiences while providing adjunctive therapy for conditions such as alopecia areata and vitiligo, for which medical options are often limited. We created a support group for children with alopecia areata and t
