C13orf31 (FAMIN) is a central regulator of immunometabolic function.

Single-nucleotide variations in C13orf31 (LACC1) that encode p.C284R and p.I254V in a protein of unknown function (called 'FAMIN' here) are associated with increased risk for systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, leprosy and Crohn's disease. Here we set out to identify the biological mechanism affected by these coding variations. FAMIN formed a complex with fatty acid synthase (FASN) on peroxisomes and promoted flux through de novo lipogenesis to concomitantly drive high levels of fatty-acid oxidation (FAO) and glycolysis and, consequently, ATP regeneration. FAMIN-dependent FAO controlled in

Freedom to read: A personal account of the 'book famine'.

Even in the digital age, access to literature and other information for people with print impairments remains extremely poor, especially in the developing world. Reading access holds cascading implications for education, economic empowerment, social participation and self-worth. In June 2013 member states of WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organization) concluded a landmark treaty to reduce copyright impediments to the dissemination of literature to print impaired people. Its effectiveness is not yet clear. Meanwhile, critics hold that disability studies' analyses have too often lacked i

Diet and cerebral malaria: the effect of famine and refeeding.

In an outbreak of Plasmodium falciparum malaria following refeeding after famine cerebral malaria was restricted to children eating grain. Nomad children consuming a predominantly milk diet were free of this complication despite an equivalent incidence of uncomplicated malaria. Freedom of nomads from cerebral complications may be due to inhibition by the milk diet of rapid division of the parasite combined with delayed recovery after famine of T cell function.

Does famine have a long-term effect on cohort mortality? Evidence from the 1959-1961 great leap forward famine in China.

Using retrospective individual mortality records of three cohorts of newborns (1954-1958, 1959-1962 and 1963-1967) from a large national fertility survey conducted in 1988 in China, this paper examines the effect of being conceived or born during the 1959-1961 Great Leap Forward Famine on postnatal mortality. The results show strong evidence of a short-term (period) effect of the famine, caused directly by starvation or severe malnutrition during the period of the famine. After controlling for period mortality fluctuation, however, the famine-born cohort does not show higher mortality than eit

Early life famine exposure to the Great Chinese Famine in 1959-1961 and subsequent pregnancy loss: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relation between famine exposure in early life and subsequent pregnancy loss, including stillbirth, and spontaneous abortion in adulthood. DESIGN: A population-based, partly ecological study. SETTING AND POPULATION: Individual data of 58 601 females born around the time of the Great Chinese Famine in 1959-1961. METHODS: Associations between the famine exposure in early life and pregnancy loss (stillbirth and spontaneous abortion) in adulthood were analysed using negative binomial regression, with the non-exposure group as reference, adjusting for region, highest ed

Consequences of Exposure to Famine Exposure on the Later Life eGFR Decline Among Survivors of the Great Chinese Famine: A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) significantly contributes to the socio-economic burden both in China and worldwide. Previous research has shown that experiencing childhood famine is linked to various chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and proteinuria. However, the long-term effects of early-life famine exposure on adult kidney function remain unclear. This study investigates whether exposure to the Chinese Great Famine (1959-1962) is associated with a decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) later in life. DESIGN AND METHODS: China Health and Retirement Longitudinal S

Schizoid personality disorder after prenatal exposure to famine.

OBJECTIVE: The authors tested whether early prenatal exposure to famine was associated with schizophrenia spectrum personality disorder in addition to being associated with schizophrenia per se as shown in a previous study. METHOD: The risk of schizoid personality disorder, as defined by ICD-6 to ICD-9, in men at age 18 years was compared in birth cohorts that were conceived at the height of the Dutch Hunger Winter famine and in unexposed birth cohorts of 1944-1946 in the famine region of Holland. RESULTS: The exposed cohort had a significantly greater risk (relative risk = 2.01) of schizoid

The persian famine of 1870-1872: prices and politics.

By whatever definitions one cares to classify food shortages and deaths resulting from lack of food, there can be little semantic difficulty in recognising a catastrophic famine in Persia (Iran) in the early 1870s. This paper briefly examines the famine in its natural, political and socio-economic context. Fluctuations in prices and in the supply of essential commodities responded primarily to weather conditions, but this response was exaggerated and in some instances triggered directly by actions in the political and economic sphere.

Expensive famine: Early hunger experience and diabetes treatment burden.

The negative effects of experiencing famine in childhood are not limited to increased morbidity. This study collected hospitalization data for diabetic patients in all hospitals in Gansu Province over a three-year period (2018-2020) and exploited the exogenous shock of the Great Famine event in China (1959-1961). We used a birth cohort DID method to assess the causal relationship between famine survivors and diabetes treatment costs. In a sample of patients with type 2 diabetes, treatment costs were higher for famine survivors than for other patients, especially those born between 1952 and 195

Food restriction-induced hyperactivity: addiction or adaptation to famine?

Increased physical activity is present in 30-80% of anorexia nervosa patients. To explain the paradox of low food intake and excessive exercise in humans and other animals, it has been proposed that increased physical activity along with food restriction activates brain reward circuits and is addictive. Alternatively, the fleeing-famine hypothesis postulates that refusal of known scarce energy-low food sources and hyperactivity facilitate migration towards new habitats that potentially contain new energy-rich foodstuffs. The use of rewarding compounds that differ in energy density, such as the

Endogenous opioid receptors and the feast or famine of maladaptive feeding.

Maladaptive feeding comprises unhealthy eating patterns that jeopardize survival, including over- and underconsumption. These behaviors are often coordinated by endogenous opioid receptors (EORs). Here, we explore the involvement of EORs in obesity and anorexia nervosa (AN), two disorders associated with dysregulated feeding behavior and relevant animal models. While seemingly opposing metabo-psychiatric states, our goal is to highlight common circuit and synaptic mechanisms underlying obesity and AN with a focus on EOR functionality. We examine the neural substrates underlying maladaptive fee

[The possible causes of the tragedy of "Port Famine" in the Strait of Magellan].

The attempts to colonize the Strait of Magellan soon followed the discovery of this route. PeDro Sarmiento de Gamboa, a Spanish sailor, established human settlements to fortify those lands and control the transit of vessels, especially those of English corsairs, which devastated Chilean and Peruvian coasts. During the summer of 1584, approximately 500 soldiers, artisans, priests, women and children established two villages called "Nombre de Jesús" and "Rey Don Felipe". From the beginning, these settlers had leadership and communication problems and difficulties to obtain food. After three wint

Microalbuminuria in adults after prenatal exposure to the Dutch famine.

Maternal undernutrition during gestation is associated with an increase in cardiovascular risk factors in the offspring in adult life. The effect of famine exposure during different stages of gestation on adult microalbuminuria (MA) was studied. MA was measured in 724 people, aged 48 to 53, who were born as term singletons in a university hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, around the time of the Dutch famine 1944 to 1945. Twelve percent of people who were exposed to famine in mid gestation had MA (defined as albumin/creatinine ratio >/=2.5) compared with 7% of those who were not prenatall

Sex differences in adult famine mortality in medieval London.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent famine events during the medieval period might have contributed to excess mortality during the Black Death in London, England (c. 1349-1350). Previous research using conventional methods of age estimation revealed that adult males experienced lower risks of mortality under "normal" (attritional) but not famine mortality conditions following the Black Death. However, given the biases inherent in conventional age estimation methods, this study reassesses sex differences in risks of medieval adult famine mortality using ages estimated via transition analysis, which avoids so

Modeling the 1998 Bahr el Ghazal famine in Southern Sudan.

This paper explores the use of system dynamics modeling to better understand the 1998 Bahr el Ghazal famine in southern Sudan. Based on expert interviews and a literature review, it presents a set of causal loop diagrams that clarify the complex dynamics involved in the crisis, demonstrating how three major political 'holds' permitted a self-reinforcing famine system to form. A simulation of this model generates similar outcomes in mortality and malnutrition to those that occurred in the actual crisis. Based on this analysis, the paper suggests several ways that modeling could have supported a

Selective mortality during famine and plague events in medieval London.

Crisis mortality events such as disease epidemics and famines have long had major impacts on human health and demography, and clarifying variation in susceptibility to crisis mortality is crucial for enhancing our understanding of the larger-scale phenomena of human adaptation and biological variation. Previous bioarchaeological research using data from human skeletal remains has revealed variable patterns of biological, and by inference, social determinants of vulnerability to medieval famine and plague mortality. However, such previous work did not account for missing data and the potential

Famine exposure in childhood and multimorbidity risk in older adults.

BackgroundPrevious research on multimorbidity focused on patterns, prevalence, and correlation and studies on famine have primarily focused on single diseases, with limited research on its effect on multimorbidity, especially in China.AimsOur study aimed to examine the association between famine exposure and the risk of multimorbidity through a cross-sectional survey in older adults.MethodsA total of 1580 community-dwelling older people were included in this study. Famine exposure was classified as nonexposed, toddlers exposed (1-3 years old exposed), preschool-age children exposed (4-6 years
