Is there an association between plantar fasciitis and knee osteoarthritis?

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) and plantar fasciitis share similar risk factors including ageing, occupation, obesity, and inappropriate shoe wear. However, the association between knee OA and heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis has received limited attention to date. AIM: We aimed to assess the prevalence of plantar fasciitis using ultrasound in patients with knee OA and to identify factors associated with plantar fasciitis in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including patients with Knee OA, fulfiling the European League Against Rheumatism c

Classification of Calcaneal Spurs and Their Relationship With Plantar Fasciitis.

Calcaneal spurs, as a cause of plantar fasciitis, are currently debatable. A prospective study was performed to classify calcaneal spurs according to the findings from an investigation of the relationship between calcaneal spurs and plantar fasciitis. Thirty patients with calcaneal spurs and plantar heel pain underwent calcaneal spur removal and endoscopic plantar fasciotomy. The relationship between the classification of calcaneal spurs and plantar fasciitis was evaluated by endoscopic findings, clinical symptoms, radiographic images, and biopsy findings. The visual analog scale for pain and

Plantar fasciitis and the calcaneal spur: Fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis is a common diagnosis in patients presenting with heel pain. The presence of co-existing calcaneal spurs has often been reported but confusion exists as to whether it is a casual or significant association. METHODS: The lateral heel radiographs of nineteen patients with a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis and nineteen comparison subjects with a lateral ankle ligament sprain matched for age and sex, were reviewed independently by two observers. Objective measurements of calcaneal spur length and a subjective grading of spur size were recorded. RESULTS: There was a s

Limb-length discrepancy as a cause of plantar fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Anisomelia, or limb-length discrepancy, has disruptive effects on gait, posture, and ambulation. Limb-length discrepancy has been shown to be a factor in stress fractures in the femur and tibia, and the longer limb, a contributing factor in the development of low-back pain, a cause of scoliosis. We sought to determine whether limb-length discrepancy contributes to the frequency and severity of plantar fasciitis. METHODS: We enrolled 26 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Direct and indirect methods were used to measure limb-length discrepancy. We took measurements from the an

Plantar fascia calcification a sequelae of corticosteroid injection in the treatment of recalcitrant plantar fasciitis.

We report the case of a 72-year-old woman suffering with severe plantar fasciitis who received a therapeutic corticosteroid injection. Two-and-a-half years after the injection she developed a small calcified lump under the skin which subsequently caused ulceration and infection. She went on to develop a diabetic foot infection requiring an extended course of intravenous antibiotics.

Effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation for treatment of plantar fasciitis.

AbstractPlantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. Pain can be persistent in some patients and interrupt daily activities and sportive activities. There are a lot of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis. We hypothesized that patients with chronic persistent plantar fasciitis can be successfully treated with radiofrequency nerve ablation (RFNA).Two hundred sixty-one patients with plantar fasciitis (378 feet) treated with RFNA from February 2017 to January 2019 were retrospectively assessed. All the patients had plantar heel pain for at least 6months. Based on their bo

The effectiveness of corticosteroid injection in the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain in adults. Although it is usually a self-limiting condition, the pain may become prolonged and severe enough to cause significant distress and disruption to the patient's daily activities and work. PubMed and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and a total of ten RCTs were selected for evaluation. These RCTs involved the use of either palpation- or ultrasonography-guided corticosteroid injections in patients diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. All placebo-controlled RCTs sh

Are single fractions of radiotherapy suitable for plantar fasciitis?

The use of radiotherapy for plantar fasciitis has never been reported in Australasia and is scarcely found in the English language medical literature, but it is commonly used in Europe, especially in Germany. In Europe, treatment courses consisting of multiple small fractions have been associated with high levels of pain relief. In the present report, the use of single fractions or radiotherapy was evaluated by reviewing seven consecutive patients referred for treatment and by applying objective and subjective criteria for pain relief. One patient died of unrelated causes soon after treatment

Scintigraphic localisation of steroid injection site in plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. We evaluated scintigraphic localisation of the inflammatory focus in 15 patients with this condition. Technetium-labelled bone scans precisely localised abnormal discrete areas of tracer uptake in 12 (80%) of patients in the medial and posterior aspect below the inferior surface of the calcaneum. Steroid injection at the inflammatory site abolished local tenderness and reduced pain in all 12. Our findings support an injection approach through the medial heel border posterior to the point of heel tenderness. Technetium scintigraphy may be a usef

Evaluation of plantar fasciitis by three-phase bone scintigraphy.

Fifteen patients complaining of chronic heel pain underwent three-phase Tc-99m MDP bone scintigraphy. Ten patients demonstrated abnormal scan findings consistent with plantar fasciitis (PF) and had responded to conventional therapy. Two patients were found to have calcaneal stress fractures, and one patient demonstrated a calcaneal spur that required no treatment. The remaining two patients had normal scans and did not appear clinically to have PF. The three-phase bone scan is therefore very useful in diagnosing PF and in distinguishing it from other etiologies of the painful heel syndrome.

Safety and Feasibility of the Plantar Portal Technique in the Surgical Management of Plantar Fasciitis: A Cadaveric Study.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the proximity of the portals and nearby motor and sensory nerves in endoscopic release of the plantar fascia and the safety and efficacy of the addition of a novel third (plantar) portal to improve access to the calcaneal spur. METHODS: Nine fresh-frozen lower extremity cadavers were examined in this study. In addition to the conventional medial and lateral portals for endoscopic plantar fascia release, a third (plantar) portal was utilized to debride the calcaneal spur area. The fascia was released with the use of an obturator cannula. Each cadaver was c

Radiofrequency Plantar Fascia Coblation With and Without Gastrocnemius Recession in the Management of Recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of plantar heel pain. Although most are self-limiting, recalcitrant conditions can be debilitating, significantly reducing patient's quality of life. A myriad of surgical procedures are available for the treatment of recalcitrant plantar fasciitis (RPF) with little consensus on best practice. This purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of radiofrequency coblation with and without gastrocnemius release on the surgical management of RPF. METHODS: Between June 2013 and June 2019, a total of 128 patients with RPF and tight gastrocne
