Mechanical and Architectural Changes in Animal Bone Following Fast Neutron Irradiation.

Damage to healthy bone following exposure to ionizing radiation has been well documented for at least seven decades. Among the reported effects are a transient increase in stiffness and a reduction in breaking strength. These changes have been linked to a decrease in osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, inducing cell cycle arrest, reducing collagen production, and increasing sensitivity to apoptotic agents. In this work, we analyzed some mechanical and structural changes in compact costal bovine bone (Hereford breed, n = 9) subjected to escalating doses of fast neutrons from a 7 Li(p,

Transient and chronic neurological complications of fast neutron radiation for adenocarcinoma of the prostate.

The records of 132 patients participating in clinical trials using fast neutron (n = 94), mixed neutron and photon (n = 16), or conventional photon (n = 22) irradiation for primary management of prostatic cancer were retrospectively reviewed to assess treatment-related neurological complications. With a median follow-up of 14 months (range 1 to 101 months), 31/132 patients (26 neutron, 3 mixed beam, 2 photon) have experienced either sciatica beginning during or shortly after treatment, or diminished bladder or bowel continence that developed at a median time of 6.5 months following treatment.

Fast neutron teletherapy for advanced carcinomas of the oral cavity and soft palate.

A retrospective study was performed to determine the efficacy of using fast neutron radiation for treating advanced squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and soft palate. The majority of patients were judged to have less than a 10% 5-year survival with conventional medical treatment. Fifteen patients with oral cavity tumors were treated for cure with neutrons alone and six were treated with a combination of neutrons and photons as part of a mixed beam fractionation scheme. In the neutron-only group, the complete regression rate was 33% in the mixed beam group, the rate was 50%. Five pati

Induction of chromosome aberrations and cell killing in Syrian hamster fibroblasts by gamma-rays, X-rays and fast neutrons.

Chromosome aberrations were scored in BHK21 C13 Syrian hamster fibroblasts, exposed to 60Co gamma-rays, 250 kV X-rays, 15 MeV neutrons or neutrons of mean energy 2.1 MeV produced from the 9Be(d,n)10B reaction. The cells were irradiated in stationary phase, where they are concentrated in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. Within experimental uncertainty there was no detectable difference between the responses to 60Co gamma-rays and to 250kV X-rays. The r.b.e. for the production of dicentrics, based on the 'one-hit' component of response, was (5 +/- 2) for the 15 MeV neutrons and (12 +/- 5) for the

Suppressed neurogenesis without cognitive deficits: effects of fast neutron irradiation in mice.

This study assessed the effects of combined low-dose neutron and γ-ray irradiation on hippocampal neurogenesis and hippocampal-dependent memory. Neural progenitor cell division and survival were evaluated in brain sections and whole hippocampal preparations following head irradiation at a dose of 0.34 Gy for neutron radiation and 0.36 Gy for γ-ray radiation. Hippocampal-dependent memory formation was tested in a contextual fear conditioning task following irradiation at doses of 0.4 Gy for neutron radiation and 0.42 Gy for γ-ray radiation. Cell division was suppressed consistently along the en

Early assessment of normal tissue tolerance of fast neutron beam radiation therapy.

Between September 10, 1973 and May 20, 1975, 94 selected patients were treated with fast neutron beams generated by bombarding an "intermediate" beryllium target with 21 MeV deuterons. The clinical material included: 58 patients with head and neck cancers; 27 patients with cerebral glioblastoma multiforme; and 9 patients with a variety of other neoplasms. Of the 67 patients treated only with neutron beams, 31 received two increments per week and 36 received three increments per week. The calculated doses in most patients were 1800 rad n gamma (neutrons + gamma components) delivered in 6 weeks.

Outcomes After Fast Neutron Therapy for Locally Advanced Base of Tongue Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Base of tongue (BOT) adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, locally aggressive malignancy that is typically associated with a high rate of disease recurrence. Surgery alone is rarely curative and highly morbid. Outcomes of systemic therapies and low linear energy transfer radiation therapy (RT) are generally poor. Fast neutron therapy (NRT), a form of high linear energy transfer radiation, is advantageous in treating radioresistant salivary gland malignancies. Long-term cancer control and swallowing outcomes in patients with BOT ACC treated with NRT were retrospectively reviewed.

Fast neutron therapy for squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region: results of a randomized trial.

A randomized trial of fast neuron therapy compared with 4MV photons for patients with head and neck cancer is reported. One hundred and sixty-eight patients were recruited between 1977 and 1984. The minimum follow-up is 2 years. Three patients were withdrawn before treatment began. Eighty-five were allocated to neutron therapy and 80 to receive photon therapy. All patients had squamous cell cancers in one of four primary sites: oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, and hypopharynx. Local tumor control was similar in both groups: 44.7% after neutrons and 45.0% after photons. Salvage surgery was perf

Delayed radiation necrosis of brainstem related to fast neutron beam irradiation: case report and literature review.

A 42-year-old man developed necrosis of the brainstem 10 months following fast neutron irradiation of a recurrent adenocystic carcinoma of the right submandibular salivary gland. The neoplasm had been diagnosed 15 years earlier. Neck dissection and several local excisions failed to control local extension, so that 7000 rad 4.8 MeV x-rays were administered. The right mandible and part of the tongue and palate were resected for recurrence and chemotherapy and transfer factor were given. Because of cranial neuropathy and erosion of the skull base, fast neutron radiation (2.080 rads) was administe

An ultra-fast method for generating synthetic down-scattered neutron data for inertial confinement fusion implosions.

In inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility, asymmetries are probed by a variety of neutron diagnostics, including neutron imaging systems, real-time neutron activation diagnostics (RTNADs), and neutron spectrometers. It is often useful to generate synthetic data based on these diagnostics to validate and tune models. However, current methods of doing so using Monte Carlo particle tracing are time-consuming. In this paper, an ultra-fast method is presented for generating synthetic neutron images, RTNAD data, and spectrometry data using line integrals and 3D con

Sensitivity analysis of fluorescent nuclear track detectors for fast and high-energy mono-energetic neutron dosimetry.

BACKGROUND: In ion beam radiotherapy, treatment radiation fields are inevitably contaminated with secondary neutrons. The energies of these neutrons can reach several hundreds of MeV. Fluorescent nuclear track detectors (FNTDs) offer a promising solution for dosimetry of fast and high-energy neutrons, particularly given their low linear energy transfer in water (LET) detection threshold. PURPOSE: This study presents an experimental FNTD sensitivity analysis in six fast mono-energetic neutron fields, comparing the response to poly allyl diglycol carbonate (PADC) neutron detectors, and investig

Results from the Radiation Assessment Detector on the International Space Station, Part 2: The fast neutron detector.

We report the results of the first six years of measurements of so-called fast neutrons on the International Space Station (ISS) with the Radiation Assessment Detector (ISS-RAD), spanning the period from February 2016 to February 2022. ISS-RAD combines two sensor heads, one nearly identical to the single sensor head in the Mars Science Laboratory RAD (MSL-RAD). The latter is described in a companion article to this one. The novel sensor is the FND, or fast neutron detector, designed to measure neutrons with energies in the range from 200 keV to about 8 MeV. ISS-RAD was deployed in February 201

The r.b.e. of fast fission neutrons (2 MeV) for chronic radiation damage of the large bowel of rats after single dose and fractionated irradiation.

Late damage in the rectum of rats was studied after local irradiation with 2 MeV fast fission neutrons and the results were compared with those for 300 kV X-rays. A similarity between latency times, and between clinical, gross pathological and histological appearances of the rectal obstruction after the two types of radiation was observed. The r.b.e. evaluated from ED 50/200 days values was 1.8 for single doses, 2.1 for two fractions and 3 for five fractions and these are similar to r.b.e.s from other investigations of chronic intestinal radiation damage. Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Hybrid Copper(I) Iodide Scintillator for Fast Neutron and X-ray Imaging.

Developing high-performance dual imaging applications, such as fast neutron and X-ray applications, using a single material presents a very significant challenge across chemistry, material science, physics, and engineering. Integrating both imaging capabilities into a single material for specialized detection applications will simplify device design and significantly reduce overall detection costs. This work represents the first demonstration of a lead-free system designed for high-performance dual imaging applications. It features a multifunctional hybrid copper(I) iodide scintillator, in whi

Treatment of a Non-syndromic Carotid Body Paraganglioma Using Fast Neutron Radiotherapy: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Non-syndromic carotid body paragangliomas (CBPs) are the most common head and neck CBPs. Malignant transformation or symptomatic presentation is rare, but patients may occasionally endorse tinnitus, cranial nerve (CN) deficits, and ear pulsations. Historically, treatment of CBP was primarily through surgical intervention, which predisposed patients to CN deficits and significant blood loss due to the neurovascular structures in close proximity to these tumors. More recently, the utilization of pre-treatment embolization and radiotherapy has allowed for the reduction in treatment morbidity. Ste
