African American Fathers' Support of Breastfeeding.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to describe African American fathers' experiences and perceptions of their role in supporting their breastfeeding partners and identify strategies to enhance this role. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Descriptive phenomenology guided the research process. Interviews were conducted with 12 African American fathers or partners recruited from community sites within the Southeastern United States between 2021 and 2022 whose partners had exclusively breastfed for at least 2 weeks within the last 24 months. RESULTS: Twelve African American fathers of breastfeeding partners were

Physically abusive fathers and risk assessment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to identify factors that predict recidivism among families in which the father is the perpetrator of physical abuse and to compare these factors to the factors that investigators believe are related to higher risk. METHOD: A case-comparison design was used to understand risk among 137 predominantly Caucasian families in which a father had injured a child. RESULTS: The multivariate analysis showed that families in which the father was unemployed (greater time at risk), had younger children, was not the biological father of all of the children, did not t

Adolescent fathers: an approach for intervention.

Many myths exist concerning the needs and problems confronting adolescent fathers. Research on adolescent pregnancy has proliferated in the last decade. We now have a substantial body of empirically-based findings in this area. Unfortunately, few substantive findings are available on adolescent fathers, yet the magnitude of this problem has reached epidemic proportion. This article will provide an overview of current research on adolescent fathers and their needs and offer suggestions for appropriate intervention.

Fathers' work leave and infant breastfeeding in a state-representative sample of fathers in Georgia, United States.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding provides multiple maternal and child benefits, but breastfeeding rates are suboptimal. Parental leave access and use have been associated with higher breastfeeding rates, however, there have been a lack of studies examining fathers' use of parental leave. The objective of this study was to measure the associations between fathers' work leave and infant breastfeeding among a representative sample of fathers from Georgia, United States. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a novel public health surveillance pilot study, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monit

My Father's Dying.

The monarch butterflies so abundant around the small pond are slowly disappearing. Tomatoes from the vine that curled its way up the drainage spout are now lined up on the kitchen windowsill to capture the sun's rays. Summer draws to an end as my father's life also draws to a close. As part of my narrative, I have included, in italics, entries from my journal from this time.

[Laennec's father and slavery].

In the legend which grows about Laennec, and also in the remote remembrance preserved in his family, the fame of his father Théophile-Marie remained very unfavorable, appearing to have been a light-headed man unable to do anything. However the studies of Madame Le Douget, magistrate in Quimper, show nevertheless a courageous and efficient judge, opponent to the social plague which was the slavery of black peoples, during a process before the court of justice of Admiralty after a shipwreck. It is the story of this episode concluding to a sort of rehabilitation that we have related in these page

Sporotrichosis in a father and son.

A 41-year-old man developed classic lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis on the left arm; his 2-year-old son developed a single lesion of the "fixed" type on the right leg. Both patients responded rapidly to therapy with oral potassium iodide. Seven previous reports of familial sporotrichosis are listed, and therapy is reviewed briefly.

Myositis in father and daughter.

The occurrence of myositis in a father and his daughter is reported. The daughter's illness resembled childhood dermatomyositis and progressed to systemic involvement and death less than four years from the onset of symptoms. In the case of the father the illness followed the course of adult polymyositis and there was little evidence of systemic involvement. The immunological and genetic significance of the two cases is discussed.

Fathering in a Pandemic: Low-Income Black Fathers' Experiences and Mental Health Stressors.

COVID-19 interventions disrupted family life, disproportionately affecting low-income Black fathers. Although family relationships are critical aspects of men's mental health and overall well-being, studies examining the effect of the pandemic from a Black fathering lens are sparse. This study explored Black fathers' experiences and adaptive responses to fathering during the pandemic, highlighting mental health consequences of their experience. Data was collected through interviews with Black fathers participating in a fatherhood-focused program in a Midwestern U.S. urban area. The average age

Forgotten fathers: an exploratory study of mothers' report of drug and alcohol problems among fathers of urban newborns.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between fathers' substance use and maternal and paternal background characteristics, infant outcome measures, and fathers' frequency of caregiving at 6 months postpartum in a cohort of cocaine-exposed and unexposed infants. METHODS: Secondary analysis was completed on data collected through interviews and medical records obtained from 252 mothers participating in an ongoing longitudinal study of cocaine-exposed and unexposed mothers and infants. RESULTS: By maternal report, 22% of the mothers reported that the father of the baby had a history of a

Fathers in Jail and their Minor Children: Paternal Characteristics and Associations with Father-Child Contact.

OBJECTIVES: More than five million children have experienced a co-resident parent leaving to spend time behind bars. Most incarceration occurs in jails, yet little is known about contact between parents in jail and their minor children. Such information is essential to inform programming and policy to support families in the context of incarceration. METHODS: In the present study, 315 fathers in jail with minor children (3-17 years old) were recruited from four jails in the Midwest region of the United States. Fathers in jail reported their demographic information, incarceration-related chara

Factors Influencing Preterm Birth in a Cohort of Predominantly Black Fathers: Preliminary Findings from the Fathers Matter Study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains a leading cause of infant mortality, with rates disproportionately high among Black women in the United States. While maternal risk factors are well-studied, paternal influences, particularly in Black families, remain underexplored. This study examined associations between paternal factors and preterm birth in a predominantly Black sample. METHODS: We analyzed data from 221 fathers in the Fathers Matter study, embedded within the Biosocial Impact on Black Births (BIBB) cohort study. Paternal sociodemographic, health, behavioral and psychosocial data were coll

Attachment in young children with incarcerated fathers.

The present study examined young children's attachment behaviors during paternal incarceration and reported on initial validity of a new measure used to rate children's attachment-related behaviors and emotions during visits in a corrections setting. Seventy-seven children, age 2 to 6 years, and their jailed fathers and current caregivers participated in the home visit portion of the study, whereas 28 of these children participated in the jail visit. The results indicated that 27% of children witnessed the father's crime and 22% of children witnessed the father's arrest, with most children who

Gay fathers' effects on children: a review.

Extrapolating results from studies of lesbians' children to gays' children and assertions of "no risk to children as a result of growing up in a family with 1 or more gay parents" are questioned. A review of 9 studies gave evidence that gays' children were (a) more apt to adopt homosexual interests and activities, (b) more apt to report sexual confusion, (c) more apt to be socially disturbed, (d) more apt to abuse substances, (e) less apt to get married, (f) more apt to have difficulty in attachment and loving relationships, (g) less religious and more unconventionally religious, (h) more apt
