Essential fatty acid requirements in infancy.

The infant's requirements for essential fatty acids (EFA) have been calculated by different workers from the same limited number of observations which depended on the use of butterfat, linoleic acid, and its esters as the source of EFA. The linoleic acid content of the butterfat employed was determined by a method of known not to be specific for the biologically active linoleic acid (cis cisC18:2omega6). The assay reported (3.3%) is about double that (1+01.6%) usually anticipated. If the butterfat used was actually of average linoleic acid content, then estimates of requirements are about twic

Lysosomes and essential fatty acid deficiency.

The hydrolytic activity usually associated with lysosomes increased in the homogenates and subcellular fractions of rat liver as a result of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency. The proportion of the total (tissue homogenate) activity found in each subcellular fraction, however, was unchanged by EFA deficiency.Lysosomes isolated from normal and EFA-deficient rat livers differed significantly in their stability to thermal and osmotic variations. This suggested that lysosomal membranes, like other membranes, were altered by EFA deficiency. In spite of increased tissue-bound hydrolytic activity

Intensification of essential fatty acid deficiency in the rat by dietary trans fatty acids.

Two studies were conducted using male rats to assess the effect of trans fatty acids upon essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency. In the first study 5% corn oil (CO), hydrogenated coconut oil (HCNO) or margarine stock (MS, partially hydrogenated soybean oil) were fed, and the levels of trans fatty acids in tissue lipids were measured. The trans fatty acids present in MS were found to intensify EFA deficiency and to be retained in tissue lipids to a high degree, especially in heart phospholipids (PL). In the second study, as the level of trans fatty acids increased in the diet, increasingly high

Association between enteral essential fatty acids and plasma phospholipid essential fatty acids related immune response in critically ill adults with COVID-19: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a complicated disease with widely varying outcomes. Up to 20% of unvaccinated, hospitalized patients infected with COVID-19 may die during the initial three weeks. Our research shows that COVID-19 infection results in rapid, remarkable change in the balance between essential fatty acid constituents of plasma phospholipids that are substrates for synthesis of signals that regulate immunity, inflammation, and thrombosis. METHODS: We assessed if enteral feeding of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, 20:5n-3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid; 22:6n-3) norma

Nutrition in brain development and aging: role of essential fatty acids.

The essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly the n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs), are important for brain development during both the fetal and postnatal period. They are also increasingly seen to be of value in limiting the cognitive decline during aging. EFA deficiency was first shown over 75 years ago, but the more subtle effects of the n-3 fatty acids in terms of skin changes, a poor response to linoleic acid supplementation, abnormal visual function, and peripheral neuropathy were only discovered later. Both n-3 and n-6 LCPs play important roles in neuronal growth, dev

Essential fatty acids and their role in conditions characterised by impulsivity.

There is a biological basis for anticipating a role for the essential fatty acids (EFAs) in the therapeutics of the large number of conditions characterized by impulsivity, hostility and aggression. Abnormalities in these constructs have been linked to dysfunction of several monoaminergic systems, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in particular. The EFAs ameliorate the function of these systems and also act through a number of other mechanisms. While limited in volume, a number of EFA supplementation studies support their role in the treatment of such conditions. This paper summarises the literature

[No effect of supplement of essential fatty acids on lateral epicondylitis].

BACKGROUND: Essential fatty acids influence the production of prostaglandins, which is suggested to be of importance for the development of chronic degenerative changes in tendons. Clinical studies indicate that treatment with essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals may be effective against tendon diseases. This randomised trial was performed to evaluate the effect of an essential fatty acid supplement on pain in lateral epicondylitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 55 patients with unilateral epicondylitis were treated with eccentric training of the wrist extensor muscles for 6 months. 50% of th

[Skin changes, pathophysiology and therapy in deficiency of essential fatty acids].

Linoleic acid (C18: 2n-6) is a free fatty acid considered as essential in man; this is mainly based on the fact that man is incapable of its synthesis and that its deficiency accounts for a defined clinical picture. Linoleic acid (LA) is an essential component of cellular membranes and plays, therefore, an important role in cells; moreover, it plays a functional part on account of its precursory position of eicosanoids. For these reasons, the skin is a preferential target in case of LA deficiency, which alters the barrier function of the skin as well as the immunoregulation of the epidermic ho

Incidence of urothelial tumors in rats deficient in essential fatty acids.

Wistar rats were fed a diet deficient in essential fatty acids (EFA). Control animals received the same diet to which was added 5% corn oil, a source of EFA. The experimental group showed clinical and chromatographic evidences of EFA deficiency. Groups of deficient and control animals were killed at various periods up to 100 weeks of age. Of 43 EFA-deficient rats, 8 (18.6%) had papillary transitional cell tumors of the urinary tract. None of the 36 controls had tumors (P less than 0.01). In 7 animals, tumors were found in the renal pelvis and upper portion of the ureter; in one, the tumor was

The Role of Essential Fatty Acids in Anorexia Nervosa and Obesity.

The two basic questions in food intake study are what we eat, and how much do we eat. Most research is directed toward the control of how much is eaten. This is likely the result of the increased number of individuals with eating disorders in the Western world. Feeding behavior is highly complex, and is controlled by many psychological, physiological, biochemical, and immunological factors. The aim of this review is to clarify the involvement of fatty acids in eating disorders such as anorexia and binge eating disorder. The review will describe the modified fatty acid profile observed in indiv

Essential fatty acids profile and lipid peroxides in severe pre-eclampsia.

There is increasing evidence that an imbalance between products of arachidonic acid metabolism (such as prostaglandins, prostacyclin and thromboxane A2) and lipid peroxidation products might have a role in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. In order to study some of the changes taking place in pre-eclampsia, the plasma concentrations of essential fatty acids and lipid peroxidation products [measured as thiobarbituric-acid (TBA)-reactive substance] were evaluated in 25 patients with severe pre-eclampsia and 20 normal pregnant control subjects. Arachidonic acid concentration (median and range) w

Hypothesis: vitamin E complements polyunsaturated fatty acids in essential fatty acid deficiency in cystic fibrosis.

While several studies have demonstrated essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency in plasma and tissue lipids of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, the reasons for this deficiency are not well established. It is believed that reduced EFA intake, malabsorption of fat, altered desaturase/lipase activity and defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) altering utilisation of EFA in epithelial cells contribute to the development of EFA deficiency in CF. It is likely that increased metabolism of arachidonic acid to eicosanoids such as leukotrienes, thromboxane and prostaglandins ma

Essential fatty acid deficiency in premature infants.

To better characterize essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency in neonates, we assessed 63 premature infants by serial determinations of plasma fatty acids for the level of linoleic acid, the presence of an abnormal trienoic acid (5,8,11-eicosatrienoic acid [20:3 omega 9]), and the ratio of this compound to arachidonic acid, ie, the triene-tetraene ratio. The data indicated that at age 7 d, 67% of these infants had low plasma linoleic acid levels, 62% showed readily detectable 20:3 omega 9, and 44% had a high triene-tetraene ratio. Infants fed by age 2 d had a normal mean linoleate level at 7 d

Essential fatty acid deficiency in surgical patients.

Parenteral nutrition may protect patients unable to eat from malnutrition almost indefinitely. If fat is not also given EFAD will occur. This outlines a prospective study of 28 surgical patients on total intravenous fat-free nutrition to determine the developmental course of EFAD and the response to therapy. Twenty-eight patients ranging from newborn to 66 years receiving parenteral nutrition without fat had regular determinations of the composition of total plasma fatty acids and the triene/tetraene ratio using gas liquid chromatography. Physical signs of EFAD were looked for also. Patients f

Essential fatty acid deficiency in malnourished children.

Fatty acid patterns of major classes of lipids of serum were measured in forty Argentine children ages 2 to 24 months admitted to the hospital with chronic malnutrition. A normal control group of 48 children from the same population was also examined. Serum lipids were extracted and separated into phospholipids, cholesteryl esters, triglycerides, and free fatty acids. These were converted to methyl esters which were analyzed by gas chromatography. In chronic malnutrition, the fatty acid patterns of phospholipids and cholesteryl esters indicated changes characteristic of essential fatty acid de

Essential fatty acids deficient diet modulates N-Acylethanolamide profile in rat's tissues.

No data are available on whether a diet deficient of the essential fatty acids is able to modulate tissue levels of endocannabinoids and congeners. Male rats fed for 12 weeks a diet deficient of essential fatty acids, palmitic and oleic acids (EFAD), replaced with saturated fatty acids (SAFA), showed lowered n-3 and n-6 PUFAs levels in plasma, liver and adipose tissue, with concomitant steep increase of oleic and mead acids, while in hypothalamus no changes in PUFA concentration were detected and only palmitoleic acid was found increased. We found a reduction of anandamide and palmitoylethanol

35S and 3H-proline incorporation in rats deficient in essential fatty acids.

The effects of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency on connective tissue metabolism were studied in rats deficient in EFA and prostaglandins (PG). In chronic EFA deficiency, 3H-proline fixation, a measure of protein synthesis, was markedly reduced in the stomach, liver, adrenal, kidney, spleen, heart, and small intestine. Collagen rich tissues, such as lung, aorta, and cartilage also demonstrated reduced 3H-proline incorporation. 35S uptake, a measure of glycosaminoglycan synthesis, was inhibited in the lung, kidney, spleen, aorta, small intestine, and cartilage. Shorter periods of EFA defici

Direct transesterification of plasma fatty acids for the diagnosis of essential fatty acid deficiency in cystic fibrosis.

This study was aimed at redefining criteria for essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency with the use of the direct transesterification procedure (1986. J. Lipid Res. 27: 114-120) and at determining whether a simple assay of total fatty acids (FA) is as predictive of EFA deficiency as the FA pattern from plasma, red cell, and platelet phospholipids. Fasting blood samples were taken from 163 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients who were encouraged to consume 35-40% of their calories as fat. Their mean (+/- SD) age was 9.6 +/- 4.8 yr. The control group consisted of 44 unaffected siblings aged 13.1 +/- 3.1

Altered phosphoinositide fatty acid composition, mass and metabolism in brain essential fatty acid deficiency.

This study describes the specific alterations in phosphoinositide mass and fatty acid composition observed in brain essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD). These investigations were motivated by the observation that alterations in volatile anesthetic potency were associated with changes in brain arachidonyl-phosphatidylinositol (PI) content, and were aimed at defining whether EFAD might alter the generation of chemical second messengers via the PI cycle. Analyses of cerebral cortical phosphoinositide mass and fatty acid composition showed that EFAD results in specific and preferential depletio
