Feedback Blunting: Total Sleep Deprivation Impairs Decision Making that Requires Updating Based on Feedback.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To better understand the sometimes catastrophic effects of sleep loss on naturalistic decision making, we investigated effects of sleep deprivation on decision making in a reversal learning paradigm requiring acquisition and updating of information based on outcome feedback. DESIGN: Subjects were randomized to a sleep deprivation or control condition, with performance testing at baseline, after 2 nights of total sleep deprivation (or rested control), and following 2 nights of recovery sleep. Subjects performed a decision task involving initial learning of go and no go respon

Learning from feedback is independent from feedback visibility, but supported by aperiodic neural activity.

Humans and other animals learn from feedback, by tending to repeat rewarded behavior and change behavior that receives negative feedback. Previous findings suggest that feedback does not need to be consciously perceived in order to be effective. Using continuous flash suppression, we presented participants with visible and invisible positive and negative feedback during a time estimation task while recording EEG. Behavioral results showed that both visible and invisible feedback significantly influenced time estimation error and adjustment in trial N+1, suggesting that subliminal reward inform

Self-reinnervated muscles lose autogenic length feedback, but intermuscular feedback can recover functional connectivity.

In this study, we sought to identify sensory circuitry responsible for motor deficits or compensatory adaptations after peripheral nerve cut and repair. Self-reinnervation of the ankle extensor muscles abolishes the stretch reflex and increases ankle yielding during downslope walking, but it remains unknown whether this finding generalizes to other muscle groups and whether muscles become completely deafferented. In decerebrate cats at least 19 wk after nerve cut and repair, we examined the influence of quadriceps (Q) muscles' self-reinnervation on autogenic length feedback, as well as intermu

Object discrimination using electrotactile feedback.

OBJECTIVE: A variety of bioengineering systems are being developed to restore tactile sensations in individuals who have lost somatosensory feedback because of spinal cord injury, stroke, or amputation. These systems typically detect tactile force with sensors placed on an insensate hand (or prosthetic hand in the case of amputees) and deliver touch information by electrically or mechanically stimulating sensate skin above the site of injury. Successful object manipulation, however, also requires proprioceptive feedback representing the configuration and movements of the hand and digits. APPR

Efferent feedback slows cochlear aging.

The inner ear receives two types of efferent feedback from the brainstem: one pathway provides gain control on outer hair cells' contribution to cochlear amplification, and the other modulates the excitability of the cochlear nerve. Although efferent feedback can protect hair cells from acoustic injury and thereby minimize noise-induced permanent threshold shifts, most prior studies focused on high-intensity exposures (>100 dB SPL). Here, we show that efferents are essential for long-term maintenance of cochlear function in mice aged 1 year post-de-efferentation without purposeful acoustic ove

Immediate feedback during academic testing.

Performance on two multiple-choice testing procedures was examined during unit tests and a final examination. The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique provided immediate response feedback in an answer-until-correct style of responding. The testing format which served as a point of comparison was the Scantron form. One format was completed by students in introductory psychology courses during unit tests whereas all students used the Scantron form on the final examination. Students tested with Immediate Feedback forms on the unit tests correctly answered more of the final examination question

Influence of feedback characteristics on perceived learning value of feedback in clerkships: does culture matter?

BACKGROUND: Various feedback characteristics have been suggested to positively influence student learning. It is not clear how these feedback characteristics contribute to students' perceived learning value of feedback in cultures classified low on the cultural dimension of individualism and high on power distance. This study was conducted to validate the influence of five feedback characteristics on students' perceived learning value of feedback in an Indonesian clerkship context. METHODS: We asked clerks in Neurology (n = 169) and Internal Medicine (n = 132) to assess on a 5-point Likert sc

Feedback from an avatar facilitates risk-taking by modulating the amygdala response to feedback uncertainty.

With the rise of cyberspace technologies, communication through avatars has become increasingly common. However, the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying behavioral changes induced by avatar interactions remain poorly understood, particularly when avatars serve as communication partners. To address this gap and uncover the biological mechanisms involved, we conducted behavioral (n = 28) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) (n = 51) experiments using a simple gambling task. Participants received dynamic facial-expression feedback from either a human observer presented as an av

Perceptual properties of feedback stimuli influence the feedback-related negativity in the flanker gambling task.

A negative deflection in the event-related potential is enhanced following error- and loss-related feedback in decision-making and simple gambling tasks. Researchers have assumed that the perceptual properties of the feedback stimuli are unimportant in explaining these effects. This assumption was tested in the present study through a flanker gambling task, in which the perceptual properties of the feedback were manipulated. Consistent with previous studies, loss elicited a larger feedback-related negativity (FRN) than gain feedback. However, this FRN reward effect was modulated by the percept

Advanced feedback enhances sensorimotor adaptation.

It is widely recognized that sensorimotor adaptation is facilitated when feedback is provided throughout the movement compared with when it is provided at the end of the movement. However, the source of this advantage is unclear: continuous feedback is more ecological, dynamic, and available earlier than endpoint feedback. Here, we assess the relative merits of these factors using a method that allows us to manipulate feedback timing independent of actual hand position. By manipulating the onset time of "endpoint" feedback, we found that adaptation was modulated in a non-monotonic manner, with

Feedback control indirect response models.

A general framework is introduced for modeling pharmacodynamic processes that are subject to autoregulation, which combines the indirect response (IDR) model approach with methods from classical feedback control of engineered systems. The canonical IDR models are modified to incorporate linear combinations of feedback control terms related to the time course of the difference (the error signal) between the pharmacodynamic response and its basal value. Following the well-established approach of traditional engineering control theory, the proposed feedback control indirect response models incorp

Response monitoring without sensory feedback.

OBJECTIVE: The elicitation of an evoked potential, the 'error negativity' (Ne) when subjects commit errors in speeded tasks, is often taken as an index of response monitoring processes. The presence of a Ne-like wave on purely correct trials challenges the current conceptions about the nature of such a monitoring system. Here, we evaluate the possibility that the Ne-like wave on correct trials is merely due to reafferences, and at the same time, we test directly the general opinion according to which the Ne is generated by an internal signal. METHODS: We studied the presence of a Ne-like wave

Cyclic hemopoiesis and feedback control.

Hemopoiesis exhibits a variety of oscillatory phenomena. Since hemopoiesis is controlled by many feedback loops and since feedback loops are potentially oscillatory, it is possible that the observed oscillatory phenomena are the result of movement of hemopoiesis into an area of operation which favors stable oscillation. Although this hypothesis explains many of the observed phenomena and has had some predictive value, its important predictions have not yet been satisfactorily tested.

Feedback goniometers for hand rehabilitation.

Active range-of-motion exercises and related activities are an important means for applying progressive stress to induce remodeling of various tissues that restrict range of motion in the hand and wrist. Supplying joint angle feedback to patients as they exercise can help them more consistently to reach the flexion/extension goals set by the therapist. To accomplish this aim, feedback goniometers have been developed that are worn on the hand during exercise and therapeutic activities. These devices supply a threshold feedback signal when a predetermined joint angle is attained. Clinical trials

From stress to feedback: How supervisor perfectionism drives graduate students' feedback seeking and avoiding behaviors.

As academic competition intensifies, graduate students are facing increasing psychological pressure in high-stress academic environments, which negatively influences both their mental well-being and academic performance. However, there are still certain gaps regarding how supervisor perfectionism influences student feedback behaviors. This study explores how supervisor perfectionism influences student feedback behavior through their perceived stress and examines the moderating role of supervisor-student exchange quality in this process. Based on the cognitive appraisal theory of stress, this r

From Feedback-Learning to Semantic Memory: Can Feedback-Related Brain Activity Predict Object-Word Associations?

This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying feedback-based learning of novel-object-novel-word associations, focusing on how feedback-locked event-related potentials acquired during learning relate to subsequent memory performance and acquired association strength. Specifically, we examined whether amplitudes of the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and N170 components after immediate or delayed feedback predicted not only free recall and recognition performance, but also N400 priming effects exerted by the novel objects on the novel words as a neural correlate of the strength of

Sensory feedback - Dependent neural de-orchestration: The effect of altered sensory feedback on Musician's Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Musician's dystonia (MD) is a task-specific movement disorder related to extensive expert music performance training. Similar to other forms of focal dystonia, MD involves sensory deficits and abnormal patterns of sensorimotor integration. The present study investigated the impaired cortical sensorimotor network of pianists who suffer from MD by employing altered auditory and tactile feedback during scale playing with multichannel EEG. METHODS: 9 healthy professional pianists and 9 professional pianists suffering from right hand MD participated in an experiment that required repeated

An Easily Accessible, Semi-Automated Approach to Creating Personalized Normative Feedback and Risk Feedback Graphics.

OBJECTIVE: Personalized normative feedback interventions show efficacy in reducing health risk behaviors (e.g., alcohol use, sexual aggression). However, complex personalized normative feedback interventions may require manual methods of inputting participant data into graphics, which introduces error, and automated approaches require substantial technical costs and funding and may limit the types of feedback that can be provided. METHOD: To make personalized normative feedback more accessible, we outline a method of using easily accessible software programs, including IBM Statistical Package
