Background: Previously, we determined that heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein E1 (hnRNP-E1) functions as an intracellular physiologic sensor of folate deficiency. In this model, l-homocysteine, which accumulates intracellularly in proportion to the extent of folate deficiency, covalently binds to and thereby activates homocysteinylated hnRNP-E1 to interact with folate receptor-α mRNA; this high-affinity interaction triggers the translational upregulation of cell surface folate receptors, which enables cells to optimize folate uptake from the external milieu. However, integral to this mode

INTRODUCTION: Despite the rapid proliferation of wearable devices in sport, athletes vary considerably in their ability to interpret device-generated physiological feedback, and the psychological pathways linking feedback perception to training load management remain insufficiently understood. This study introduces physiological data literacy (PDL) as a content-specific form of data literacy and examines whether PDL and recovery self-regulation (RSR) sequentially mediate the association between wearable device feedback perception (WFP) and training load management behavior (TLM).

BACKGROUND Tension-type headache (TTH) decreases the ability to concentrate and function during daily activities in affected patients. As most patients with TTH exhibit forward head posture (FHP). Various interventions have been proposed to resolve TTH. However, research regarding the efficacy of these interventions remains lacking. The present study aimed to investigate the association between FHP and TTH, and to evaluate the efficacy of various intervention methods on headache symptoms and other clinical variables in patients with TTH induced by FHP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Participants were ra

Our review addresses the contributions of four sources of neural sensory feedback, namely, locomotor and respiratory muscle afferents, lung stretch receptors, and carotid chemoreceptors, to the cardiorespiratory responses to rhythmic exercise and to exercise limitation in health and disease. Experiments in healthy humans and animals that used a blockade or partial blockade of each feedback mechanism during physiological exercise demonstrated the obligatory nature of each of these sensory inputs to cardiorespiratory function, locomotor effort and muscle fatigue, and exercise performance. It is widely recognized that sensorimotor adaptation is facilitated when feedback is provided throughout the movement compared with when it is provided at the end of the movement. However, the source of this advantage is unclear: continuous feedback is more ecological, dynamic, and available earlier than endpoint feedback. Here, we assess the relative merits of these factors using a method that allows us to manipulate feedback timing independent of actual hand position. By manipulating the onset time of "endpoint" feedback, we found that adaptation was modulated in a non-monotonic manner, with

A number of systems of feedback control during dialysis have been developed, which have the shared characteristic of prospectively measuring physiological parameters and then automatically altering dialysis parameters in real time according to a pre-specified dialysis prescription. These include feedback systems aimed at reducing intradialytic hypotension based on relative blood volume monitoring linked to adjustments in ultrafiltration and dialysate conductivity, and blood temperature monitoring linked to alterations in dialysate temperature. Feedback systems also exist that manipulate sodium

Cybernetics is a transdisciplinary science which studies circular causal processes such as feedback and recursion. Its concepts are concordant with those of modern endocrinology. In this opinion piece, we focus on barocybernetics, viewing cybernetics through an obesity perspective. Baro-cybernetics may be defined as the transdisciplinary study of feedback mechanisms which help in weight homoeostasis, during health and disease. Baro- cybernetics includes not only basic sciences such as biochemistry and physiology, but the application of these concepts to psychology and pharmacology of obesity.

Load proprioceptive feedback measured by campaniform sensilla (CS) substantially contributes to the generation of leg stepping during walking. In stick insects, the effect of load feedback on the antagonistic protractor and retractor motor neurons (MNs) reverses depending on the walking direction to support the functional stance MN pool in both stepping directions. However, this was shown in highly reduced preparations in which the stimulated leg did not perform actual stepping movements, but the effect was inferred from MN activity profiles. It is still largely unknown whether load feedback s

The bronchial tree exhibits a striking fractal architecture that enables efficient ventilation, but how this geometry emerges during development has remained unclear. Mederacke et al. show that local mechanical and hydrodynamic feedback progressively drives the self-organization of fractal airway geometry across development, regeneration, and disease.

Animals flexibly adjust their movements in real time to capture prey using environmental sensory cues. While sensorimotor transformations have been extensively studied in visual and somatosensory systems, their structure remains poorly understood in substrate-borne vibration sensing. Here, we combined high-resolution web vibration recordings, capable of resolving micrometer-scale displacements, with fine-scale behavioral tracking in the orb-weaving spider Uloborus diversus to investigate how vibration sensing guides prey capture. Using unsupervised modeling, we identified distinct behavioral s

Testosterone is commonly associated with risk-taking, yet empirical evidence remains mixed. The Somatic Marker Hypothesis proposes that affective physiological reactions to the consequences of a choice can later be reactivated in anticipation of subsequent decisions, thereby biasing decisions. The hypothesis was that testosterone would positively relate to risk-taking by moderating physiological responses occurring prior to risky decisions. Fifty-five adults (27 women) provided a salivary sample to assess testosterone levels before completing the Iowa Gambling Task. In this task, participants

BACKGROUND: Thirst is a sensation normally aroused by a lack of water and associated with a desire to drink more fluid.
AIM: The aims of this brief review are twofold: (a) to summarize the thirst mechanism in how it is initiated and diminished, and (b) to describe techniques to assess human thirst accurately in a variety of situations.
DISCUSSION: Thirst is maintained via a feedback-controlled mechanism, regulated by central and peripheral factors, as well as social and psychological cues. Most studies of thirst have focused on the initiation of water intake and the neural mechanisms respons

Prostanoids are involved in various physiological/pathophysiological functions, such as inflammation. Since persistent inflammation may cause chronic symptoms, their activation is very short and needs to be properly terminated. Due to structural similarities, some prostanoids and their metabolites may have ability to activate noncognate prostanoid receptors as biased agonists and/or blockers. However, the physiological roles of these biased activities remain unclear. This review mainly focused on prostaglandin (PG) E2 and PGD2 as well as their metabolites, and hypothesized that the physiologic

Biological systems maintain functional order through precise responses, with time-dependent biphasic dynamics (TBD) serving as a key regulatory mechanism. However, the network topologies supporting TBD and the principles underlying their robustness remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate all possible one-, two-, and three-node network motifs using extensive random parameter sampling to evaluate their capacity to generate TBDs. Statistical analysis of the resulting dynamics reveals that incoherent feedforward loops and negative feedback loops constitute core topological mo

Modern large-scale recordings show that motor cortex activity during reaching evolves along low-dimensional trajectories, often interpreted as neural bases for motor command generation. However, the origin of these patterns and how they flexibly reorganize across tasks remains unclear. Here, we show that hallmark features of motor cortical activity, including the encoding of several movement parameters during preparation and rotational dynamics during execution, emerge naturally in a linear model composed of a random network coupled to a biomechanical system. Under optimal control, the model a

Balancing a bicycle is typical for the balance control humans perform as a part of a whole range of behaviors (walking, running, skating, skiing, etc.). This paper presents a general model of balance control and applies it to the balancing of a bicycle. Balance control has both a physics (mechanics) and a neurobiological component. The physics component pertains to the laws that govern the movements of the rider and his bicycle, and the neurobiological component pertains to the mechanisms via which the central nervous system (CNS) uses these laws for balance control. This paper presents a comp

Stress-associated disorders such as melancholic depression are characterized by persistent hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activation and intensive anxiety. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) appears to play an essential role in pathophysiology of such disorders. In an attempt to elucidate possible mechanisms underlying persistent activation of CRH in the central nervous system (CNS), we examined responses of hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic CRH systems to the stressors (immobilization stress or psychological stress) and interactions between these CRH systems and glucocor

Heightened emotional reactivity to peer feedback is predictive of adolescents' depression risk. Examining variation in emotional reactivity within currently depressed adolescents may identify subgroups that struggle the most with these daily interactions. We tested whether trait rumination, which amplifies emotional reactions, explained variance in depressed adolescents' physiological reactivity to peer feedback, hypothesizing that rumination would be associated with greater pupillary response to peer rejection and diminished response to peer acceptance. Twenty currently depressed adolescents

The feedback negativity (FN) event-related potential (ERP) is widely studied during gambling feedback tasks. However, research on FN and anxiety is minimal and the findings are mixed. To clarify these discrepancies, the current study (N = 238) used time-frequency analysis to disentangle overlapping contributions of delta (0-3 Hz) and theta (3-7 Hz) to feedback processing in a clinically anxious sample, with severity assessed through general worry and physiological arousal scales. Greater general worry showed enhanced delta- and theta-FN broadly across both gain and loss conditions, with theta-

Human locomotion exhibits remarkable adaptability, allowing individuals to dynamically adjust their gait patterns in response to changing environmental demands. Locomotor adaptation on a split-belt treadmill has been a widely studied motor learning technique where two independent treadmill belts move at different speeds, generating adaptation of stepping symmetry over time. This review synthesizes current knowledge on how distinct neural substrates modulate gait in response to the split-belt treadmill through reactive and adaptive processes, highlighting the cerebellum's role in forward model
