Motor learning in hemi-Parkinson using VR-manipulated sensory feedback.

AIMS: Modalities for rehabilitation of the neurologically affected upper-limb (UL) are generally of limited benefit. The majority of patients seriously affected by UL paresis remain with severe motor disability, despite all rehabilitation efforts. Consequently, extensive clinical research is dedicated to develop novel strategies aimed to improve the functional outcome of the affected UL. We have developed a novel virtual-reality training tool that exploits the voluntary control of one hand and provides real-time movement-based manipulated sensory feedback as if the other hand is the one that m

Extremum-Seeking Control for a Robotic Leg Prosthesis with Sensory Feedback.

By sensing changes in the contact force between the leg and level ground, humans can perceive their walking speed and adjust leg stiffness to accommodate walking terrains. To realize this natural regulation mechanism on the lower limb amputee, noninvasive functional electrical stimulation (nFES) was used to assist the subject in sensing the change in contact force between the leg and level ground, allowing for the adjustment of control parameters in the prosthetic leg. The cost function was designed to combine the tracking errors of the joints and changes in the stimulating current. For differ

Sensory Feedback in Hand Prostheses: A Prospective Study of Everyday Use.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory feedback in hand prostheses is lacking but wished for. Many amputees experience a phantom hand map on their residual forearm. When the phantom hand map is touched, it is experienced as touch on the amputated hand. A non-invasive sensory feedback system, applicable to existing hand prostheses, can transfer somatotopical sensory information via phantom hand map. The aim was to evaluate how forearm amputees experienced a non-invasive sensory feedback system used in daily life over a 4-week period. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study included seven forearm amputees. A no

Delayed auditory feedback in repetitive tapping: a role for the sensory goal.

The open-loop model by Wing and Kristofferson has successfully explained many aspects of movement timing. A later adaptation of the model assumes that timing processes do not control the movements themselves, but the sensory consequences of the movements. The present study tested direct predictions from this "sensory-goals model". In two experiments, participants were instructed to produce regular intervals by tapping alternately with the index fingers of the left and the right hand. Auditory feedback tones from the taps of one hand were delayed. As a consequence, regular intervals between tap

Clinical evaluation of a sensory feedback device: the limb load monitor.

Based on records of 81 patients who used the LLM, and on questionnaire answers and comments from clinicians, the following can be concluded: 1. The LLM can be operated easily after a minimum of training. It does not break down with extended clinical use when handled properly. 2. The LLM manual provides sufficient information for proper operation and clinical use of the device. 3. The number of patients in a clinic who can benefit from LLM training can be predicted, if consideration is given to the type of facility and the size of the patient population and physical therapy staff. 4. The larges

A Standardized Vibro-tactile Sensory Feedback System For Upper-limb Prostheses.

This work describes the design and evaluation of a vibro-tactile sensory feedback system with standardized stimuli for force perception. Five vibration intensities corresponding to five force levels were identified by a calibration experiment on six intact-arm subjects. Eight of ten intact-arm participants and the trans-radial amputee subject learned to distinguish the force levels within one hour of force recognition training. Augmenting visual feedback with vibro-tactile feedback in a force replication task did not significantly affect performance. Participants' force replication performance

Incorporating feedback from multiple sensory modalities enhances brain-machine interface control.

The brain typically uses a rich supply of feedback from multiple sensory modalities to control movement in healthy individuals. In many individuals, these afferent pathways, as well as their efferent counterparts, are compromised by disease or injury resulting in significant impairments and reduced quality of life. Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) offer the promise of recovered functionality to these individuals by allowing them to control a device using their thoughts. Most current BMI implementations use visual feedback for closed-loop control; however, it has been suggested that the inclusio

Wearable Stimulator for Upper and Lower Limb Somatotopic Sensory Feedback Restoration.

Neuroprostheses capable of providing Somatotopic Sensory Feedback (SSF) enables the restoration of tactile sensations in amputees, thereby enhancing prosthesis embodiment, object manipulation, balance and walking stability. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) represents a primary non-invasive technique for eliciting somatotopic sensations. Devices commonly used to evaluate the effectiveness of TENS stimulation are often bulky and main powered. However, current portable TENS devices frequently fall short of key functional requirements, particularly in terms of stimulation paramet

A Wearable Device for Hand Sensorimotor Rehabilitation Through Augmented Sensory Feedback.

The loss of sensitivity of the upper limb due to central or peripheral neurological injuries severely limits the ability to manipulate objects, hindering personal independence. Non-invasive augmented sensory feedback techniques are used to promote neural plasticity hence to restore the grasping function. We devised a wearable device for hand sensorimotor rehabilitation capable of reliably detect transient tactile events based on custom piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors and deliver discrete bursts of vibrations upon these events. We integrated the sensors into a fabric glove

Impact of Sensory Haptic Vibrotactile Feedback on Manual Dexterity in Augmented Reality.

The use of immersive environments is increasing, especially in rehabilitation and other areas, like sports and gaming. Tasks performed in virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) often have poorer motor performance, in part due to reduced tactile and proprioceptive inputs. We investigated whether vibrotactile haptic feedback could enhance motor performance within AR. We used the Box and Block Test (BBT) to investigate manual dexterity, where participants moved cubes over a partition using one hand. Participants performed the task in 8 conditions: Real, AR without feedback, and AR with haptic wristban

Model-based analysis of a distal sensory feedback implant for thumb prostheses.

Naturalistic sensory feedback is crucial for improving the functionality and acceptance of upper-limb prostheses. Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves via implanted electrodes has shown a viable approach to providing real-time sensory information to hand prostheses. Although the loss of digits accounts for most upper-limb amputations, no existing digital prosthesis incorporates sensory feedback. This would be particularly important in the case of thumb amputation, as it leads to major functional impairments. Here, we present a computational model to assess the feasibility of using a cuf

Restoring Somatotopic Sensory Feedback in Lower Limb Amputees through Noninvasive Nerve Stimulation.

Patients with lower limb amputation experience ambulation disorders since they rely exclusively on visual information in addition to the tactile information they receive from stump-socket interface. The lack of sensory feedback in commercial lower limb prostheses is essential in their abandonment by patients with transtibial amputation (TTA) or transfemoral amputation (TFA). Recent studies have obtained promising results using invasive interfaces with peripheral nervous system presenting drawbacks related to surgery. This paper aims to (a) investigate the potential of transcutaneous electrical

Internal sensory models allow for balance control using muscle spindle acceleration feedback.

Motor control requires sensory feedback, and the nature of this feedback has implications for the tasks of the central nervous system (CNS): for an approximately linear mechanical system (e.g., a freely standing person, a rider on a bicycle), if the sensory feedback does not contain the state variables (i.e., joint position and velocity), then optimal control actions are based on an internal dynamical system that estimates these states from the available incomplete sensory feedback. Such a computational system can be implemented as a recurrent neural network (RNN), and it uses a sensory model

Object Recognition via Evoked Sensory Feedback during Control of a Prosthetic Hand.

Haptic and proprioceptive feedback is critical for sensorimotor integration when we use our hand to perform daily tasks. Here, we evaluated how externally evoked haptic and proprioceptive feedback and myoelectric control strategies affected the recognition of object properties when participants controlled a prosthetic hand. Fingertip haptic sensation was elicited using a transcutaneous nerve stimulation grid to encode the prosthetic's fingertip forces. An array of tactors elicited patterned vibratory stimuli to encode tactile-proprioceptive kinematic information of the prosthetic finger joint.

Design and impact of systems for artificial sensory feedback in lower-limb prostheses.

INTRODUCTION: The loss of motor function due to lower limb amputation may be compensated by a prosthetic leg. To improve their functionality, systems for artificial sensory feedback have been proposed, but have yet to reach widespread clinical use. This review aims to provide an overview of the design and impact of such systems. AREAS COVERED: Based on a systematic literature search in the Pubmed and Embase databases (21 September 2025), we analyzed 63 studies proposing a total of 81 feedback systems. When categorized according to the feedback variable, pre-processing techniques (discretizati

Investigating Osseoperception in Distal Regions of the Upper Limb for Augmented Sensory Feedback.

The somatosensory function is crucial for motor control, but is often deemed secondary in the design of assistive technologies for individuals with neuromotor impairments. This study investigates osseoperception-auditory and vibrotactile sensations evoked through bone stimulation-at the wrist pisiform bone (PB) and metacarpal head (MCH) of the index finger in 12 participants. Vibratory stimuli (100-6000 Hz) were applied during four psychophysical experiments: sensation discrimination, perception thresholds, sensory mapping, and loudness evaluation. Tactile sensations occurred below 940 Hz at t

The interplay of sensory feedback, arousal, and action tremor amplitude in essential tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) amplitude is modulated by visual feedback during target driven movements and in a grip force task. It has not been examined yet whether visual feedback exclusively modulates target force tremor amplitude or if other afferent inputs like auditory sensation has a modulatory effect on tremor amplitude as well. Also, it is unknown whether the enhanced sensory feedback causes an increase of arousal in persons with ET (p-ET). We hypothesized that (1) amplitude of tremor is modulated by variation of auditory feedback in the absence of visual feedback in a force tremor paradigm;

A sensory feedback system for prosthetic hand based on evoked tactile sensation.

The lack of reliable sensory feedback has been one of the barriers in prosthetic hand development. Restoring sensory function from prosthetic hand to amputee remains a great challenge to neural engineering. In this paper, we present the development of a sensory feedback system based on the phenomenon of evoked tactile sensation (ETS) at the stump skin of residual limb induced by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). The system could map a dynamic pattern of stimuli to an electrode placed on the corresponding projected finger areas on the stump skin. A pressure transducer placed a
