[The role of the personality in the feeding behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti

Breast feeding and neonatal behavioral state.

18 normal newborn infants were studied at the age of 5-6 days. Each infant was given breast or bottlefeeding in 2 different sessions on the same day. The newborn assessment was also done in these 2 3-hour sessions, in which sucking and behavioral state were determined. 10 of 18 infants were found to fall asleep soon after the breastfeeding, and to have more quiet sleep and less waking than after bottlefeeding. All of the mothers showed good breast-milk secretion when examined. The other 8 infants, who were not given enough milk, did not show the abovementioned tendency. These results suggest t

Endocrine modulation of macronutrient self‑selection in feeding behavior.

Insect feeding behavior can be conceptualized as two interacting control systems: mechanical control of mouthpart motor programs and gut contractions, and nutritional control encompassing nutrient sensing and endocrine signaling. Successful nutrient self‑selection by omnivores such as crickets is essential for normal growth and development. Further studies directly dissecting neural circuits centered on the brain-suboesophageal ganglion-frontal ganglion axis and how endocrine signals modulate and orchestrate motor patterns and motivational state for preferable foraging and self-selective feedi

Effects of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior.

Zoological institutions develop human-animal interaction opportunities for visitors to advance missions of conservation, education, and recreation; however, the animal welfare implications largely have yet to be evaluated. This behavioral study was the first to quantify impacts of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior and welfare, by documenting giraffe time budgets that included both normal and stereotypic behaviors. Thirty giraffes from nine zoos (six zoos with varying guest feeding programs and three without) were observed using both instantaneous scan sampling and continuous b

Central administration of mesotocin inhibits feeding behavior in chicks.

Mesotocin (MT) is a neurohypophysis hormone in non-mammalian vertebrates including chickens, and homologous of oxytocin (OT) in mammals. Oxytocin (OT) is a well known reproductive hormone in mammals, but the physiological roles of MT in chickens have not been clarified well. OT is thought to regulate feeding behavior because central and peripheral injections of OT inhibit feeding behavior in mammals. In avian, on the other hand, the effect of MT on feeding regulation has not yet been clarified. Therefore, the present study was carried out to examine whether MT is related to the regulation of f

Infection with a plant virus modifies vector feeding behavior.

Vector infection by some animal-infecting parasites results in altered feeding that enhances transmission. Modification of vector behavior is of broad adaptive significance, as parasite fitness relies on passage to a new host, and vector feeding is nearly always essential for transmission. Although several plant viruses infect their insect vectors, we have shown that vector infection by a plant virus alters feeding behavior. Here we show that infection with Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), type member of the only plant-infecting genus in the Bunyaviridae, alters the feeding behavior of its th

Prenatal imprinting of postnatal specific appetites and feeding behavior.

Epigenetic influences on the fetus's genotype have been shown to occur during intrauterine life. Experimentally imposed extracellular dehydration in pregnant rats (a model for human hyponatremia caused by gravidic vomiting) brings about a dramatic enhancement of salt appetite not only in the dam, but also in offspring when they reach adulthood. This phenomenon has been verified in human newborn infants and adults whose mothers experienced nausea and/or vomiting during pregnancy. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy enhances its palatability for the offspring. Ingestion of olfactory test substa

Feeding behavior identifies dairy cows at risk for metritis.

Dairy cows experience a high incidence of disease and metabolic disorders in the weeks immediately following calving, but early and accurate diagnosis remains a challenge. Cows suffering from metritis, one common disease following calving, exhibit reduced milk yield and reproductive performance. However, afflicted cows show few overt signs of illness and frequently go unnoticed in the absence of veterinary examination. To determine whether changes in feeding behavior could be used to identify animals at risk for metritis, attendance at the feed alley was monitored continuously for 26 Holstein

Intraaccumbens baclofen selectively enhances feeding behavior in the rat.

Intraaccumbens infusions of the GABA(B) agonist baclofen are known to stimulate food intake in the rat. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of baclofen infusion on nonfood-related chewing and on the consumption of a palatable fluid. Rats were bilaterally infused with baclofen (188 ng in 1 microL) or saline, and tested in a situation in which food was available in one or two locations and wood blocks might also be present. Baclofen-infused animals showed no enhancement of chewing directed at the wood blocks, but showed increased food consumption regardless of food location.

Effect of restraint stress on feeding behavior of rats.

The expression of appetite reflects the complex functioning of a psychobiological system organized in different levels closely related to each other, in which emotional changes can influence feeding behavior. Benzodiazepines are widely used as anxiolytics and can change behaviors caused by stress. The aim of the present study was to verify the feeding behavior of rats, submitted or not to fasting, after acute and chronic restraint stress. We also evaluated the response to the ingestion of sweet food of chronically restrained animals after the administration of diazepam. Male adult Wistar rats

Onset of feeding behavior in intensively housed dairy calves.

Development of early feed and water intake is not well documented in dairy calves, and little is known about how traditional, intensive feeding management influences the development of species-specific behaviors, such as rumination. Our first objective was to describe grain, water, and hay intake in calves from birth. Our second objective was to evaluate whether early access to hay influenced the likelihood of reaching biologically relevant thresholds of grain and water intake (grain: 50, 100, 250, 500, 900 g; water: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 L), and rumination (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% of a 24-h d) compared wit

Host-Feeding Behavior of Mosquitoes in the Florida Everglades.

Background: West Nile virus (WNV), Everglades virus (EVEV), and five species of Orthobunyavirus were isolated from mosquitoes collected in the Everglades in 2016-2017. Prior studies of blood meals of mosquitoes in southern Florida have related findings to acquisition and transmission of EVEV, St. Louis encephalitis virus, and WNV, but not the Orthobunyavirus viruses associated with the subgenus Melanoconion of the genus Culex. Materials and Methods: In the present study, blood-fed mosquitoes were collected in the Everglades in 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2022, and from an industrial site in Naples,

Gut Microbiota-Brain Axis in Regulation of Feeding Behavior.

The survival of microorganisms inhabiting the intestinal tract depends on the nutrients provided by the host, with the latter obtaining them through food intake. It is hence not surprising that the co-evolution of gut bacteria and their hosts, including humans, shaped intrinsic interactions between their respective metabolisms with an impact on host feeding behavior. Understanding molecular pathways underlying such interactions may aid in the development of new therapeutic approaches for several pathological conditions accompanied by altered feeding behavior. A Special Issue titled "Gut Microb

Superb feeding behavior of Aedes albopictus transmitting Zika virus.

Disease-mediated mosquitoes have been receiving much attention, as the World Health Organization recently declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency. Mosquitoes transmit pathogens that cause various tropical diseases including malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever as well as Zika virus. The vector efficiency of mosquitoes depends on their blood-feeding characteristics and the mechanics of their blood-sucking pump system, but only a few studies have attempted to investigate these key issues. In this study, we demonstrate the rapid and gluttonous liquid-feeding characteristics of

Adenovirus-mediated suppression of hypothalamic glucokinase affects feeding behavior.

Glucokinase (GK), the hexokinase involved in glucosensing in pancreatic β-cells, is also expressed in arcuate nucleus (AN) neurons and hypothalamic tanycytes, the cells that surround the basal third ventricle (3V). Several lines of evidence suggest that tanycytes may be involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Tanycytes have extended cell processes that contact the feeding-regulating neurons in the AN, particularly, agouti-related protein (AgRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons. In this study, we develop

Central insulin suppresses feeding behavior via melanocortins in chicks.

Growing evidence suggests that insulin interacts with both orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides in the brain for the control of feeding behavior in mammals. However, the action of central insulin in chicks has not yet been identified. In the present study, we investigated the effects of central injection of insulin on feeding behavior in chicks. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of insulin, at doses that do not influence peripheral glucose levels, significantly inhibited food intake in chicks. Central injection of insulin in chicks significantly increased expression of pro-opiomelan

Deterioration of feeding behavior following surgical treatment of drooling.

Few adverse effects of the surgical treatment of drooling are reported in the literature. This report describes a young man with severe extrapyramidal cerebral palsy and profuse drooling whose oral feeding behavior deteriorated following bilateral submandibular gland excision and parotid duct rerouting. Before surgery the patient had safe, functional oral feeding skills, and eating was enjoyable. Following surgery he developed progressive feeding difficulties, weight loss, and aspiration pneumonia. His deterioration led to the placement of a feeding gastrostomy and the end of all oral feedings

Variation in social feeding behavior and interactions among Caenorhabditis nematodes.

The ability to respond to complex stimuli and environmental cues is essential for organisms to survive and reproduce. Responding to a wide range of stimuli requires a neuronal network that can integrate cues and execute behavioral responses. Evolution of behaviors occurs ubiquitously in most established ecological niches, even among closely related species. To uncover the genetic and neuronal drivers of evolving behaviors, we have taken advantage of the large and relatively ancient divergence in the Caenorhabditis genus to ask how different Caenorhabditis nematodes respond to environmental sti

Pharyngeal Pumping Assay for Quantifying Feeding Behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.

C. elegans is a well-established nematode model organism, with 83% of its genes conserved in humans with translation potential. C. elegans is translucent, with clearly defined cellular organization, and robustly identifiable under a microscope, being an excellent model for studying feeding behavior. Its neuromuscular pharyngeal pump undergoes a pumping motion that can be quantified to study feeding behavior at specific treatment conditions and in genetically modified worms. Understanding the evolutionarily conserved feeding behaviors and regulatory signals is vital, as unhealthy eating habits
