Cerebellar hypoplasia caused by feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is well documented in domestic cats. Still, it remains unreported in wild felid species, including the Amur leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura). Understanding the impact of such viral diseases on wild populations is crucial for advancing conservation efforts and protecting wildlife. An orphaned Amur leopard cat exhibiting idiopathic ataxia was rescued. Initial diagnostics, including physical examination, radiography, and blood analysis, yielded no remarkable findings, though its clinical signs indicated an underlying

Canine parvovirosis is a fatal disease state traditionally caused by canine parvovirus (CPV), which evolved from feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). While FPV was historically restricted to felids, FPV-like strains were recently reported to be causing clinical disease in dogs. This study aims to characterize an FPV-like strain detected in an eight-week-old unvaccinated female dog in Spain exhibiting hemorrhagic diarrhea and severe leukopenia. After fecal DNA isolation, a 1745-base-pair fragment of the VP2 gene was sequenced for phylogenetic and molecular analysis. Our results revealed that this

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a major feline pathogen, but canine-derived FPV variants have recently been identified. Here, we compared the pathogenicity of a canine-derived FPV strain in cats with that of a lethal feline-derived FPV strain and evaluated the evolutionary significance of its NS1 mutations. Kittens infected with the canine-derived strain developed only mild, self-limiting diarrhea without fever or mortality, whereas those infected with the feline-derived strain developed severe disease and reached humane endpoints by 9 dpi. The canine-derived strain caused prolonged fecal

OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are only a few studies on how immunocompromised cats, such as cats infected with feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), respond to vaccination. Therefore, this study measured feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) antibodies in retrovirus-infected cats within a period of 28 days after FPV vaccination, and compared the immune response to that of non-infected cats.
METHODS: Eight asymptomatic retrovirus-infected cats (four FeLV, four FIV), and non-infected age-matched control cats (n = 67) were vaccinated with a commercial FPV modified live

A reverse genetics system for the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) strain JL2280 was successfully established in this study. By optimizing the cloning strategy for the terminal hairpin structures, a full-length infectious clone, pFPV, harboring a KpnI genetic marker was constructed. The recombinant virus (rFPV) was successfully rescued in CRFK cells and exhibited replication kinetics, pathogenicity, and morphological characteristics comparable to those of the wild-type virus. To evaluate the potential of FPV as a live vector, a recombinant virus expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EG

INTRODUCTION: In August 2021, an outbreak of Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV) was observed in four 3-month-old Pallas' cats at Xining Wildlife Park. Despite timely intervention, the Pallas'cat cubs continued to experience clinical symptoms including diarrhea, seizures, and decreased white blood cell count, and all four cats died.
METHODS: FPV clinical suspicions were initially confirmed by positive Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing. Pathological and immunohistochemical examinations (IHC) were performed on some organs, and the results showed that, encephalitis, viral enteritis, and splen

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) poses a significant threat to carnivores worldwide, with increasing documentation of spillover infections in endangered species, including the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Despite the presence of serological evidence indicating historical exposure, contemporary data concerning the prevalence of FPV and the associated risk factors in giant pandas remains limited. This study conducted a comprehensive seroepidemiological survey of 136 giant pandas, representing 262 serum samples, from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding between 2015 and 2023

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) represents a significant health threat to the kittens. While traditional vaccines administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection are effective, they can induce stress and adverse reactions. Moreover, unvaccinated kittens visiting veterinary clinics risk exposure to FPV, increasing their susceptibility to infection. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a safer, more gentle vaccination method with streamlined administration. In this study, we developed a recombinant L. plantarum NC8/VP2 expressing the VP2 protein of the prevalent Chinese FPV strain, F

Feline panleukopenia (FPL) is a serious viral disease caused by Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) that causes leukopenia, lymphopenia, and neutropenia, particularly in young or unvaccinated cats. There is no specific antiviral treatment available for FPL, and treatment protocols generally consist of fluid therapy and supportive care. This study evaluated the clinical and hematological efficacy of filgrastim, a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that has shown successful results in treating FPL in various studies, and the paraimmune activator-inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) in 4

BACKGROUND: Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) and feline parvovirus (FPV) are known as the main causes of several serious diseases and have a severe impact on puppies and kittens, respectively. FPV and new CPV-2 variants are all able to infect cats, causing diseases indistinguishable from feline panleukopenia. However, FPV only replicates efficiently in feline cells in vitro and replicates in dogs in the thymus and bone marrow without being shed in feces. In our previous study, the genotypes of six parvoviral isolates were unable to be identified using a SimpleProbe® real-time PCR assay.

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) causes feline panleukopenia (FP), a highly contagious and often fatal disease in domestic cats. This study investigated FPV detection, associated epidemiological factors, and partial VP2 genetic characteristics among clinically suspected cats presented in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Exploratory molecular docking was also performed to compare predicted VP2-transferrin receptor type-1 interactions in feline and canine systems. FPV DNA was detected in 83 of 180 clinically suspected cats (46.11%). Multivariable analysis revealed higher odds of FPV PCR positivity in

Feline panleukopenia (FPL), a highly contagious and frequently fatal disease of cats, is caused by Feline parvovirus (FPV) and Canine parvovirus (CPV). We characterised the diversity of these Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 variants in 18 faecal samples collected from domestic cats with FPL during an outbreak, using targeted parvoviral DNA metagenomics to a mean depth of >10,000 × coverage per site. All samples comprised FPV alone. Compared with the reference FPV genome, isolated in 1967, 44 mutations were detected. Ten of these were nonsynonymous, including 9 in nonstructural genes and one in VP1

Comparative studies of species-derived cytokines remain limited in endangered carnivores. We cloned six immune-related cytokines from Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), with sequence analysis revealing >90% identity across Felidae. Among all tested cytokines, IL-15 demonstrated superior and sustained lymphocyte-stimulatory activity at 200 ng/mL. To investigate antiviral potential, F81 cells were pretreated with IL-15 and challenged with feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). Mechanistic studies revealed that IL-15 attenuated virus-induced apoptosis by modulating key regulatory proteins: downreg

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV) is the primary causative agent of a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting domestic cats and other felids. The increasing isolation of species-specific FPLV variants from multiple host species has garnered considerable attention, highlighting the need to investigate their genetic diversity. In this study, three FPLV isolates were obtained and phylogenetically classified into two distinct FPLV-China groups within separate clusters. Compared to the prototype FPLV (M38246.1), these isolates exhibited seven amino acid substitutions in the NS1 (n = 6)

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) causes severe, highly contagious infectious diseases in domestic cats, yet the comprehensive pathogenic mechanisms of circulating field isolates remain incompletely elucidated. Here, two contemporary FPV field strains (F513 and F1105) were isolated and genetically characterized from clinical samples of FPV vaccinated diarrheic cats. In vivo pathogenicity assays demonstrated that both strains induced typical FPV clinical signs, with viral replication predominantly localized to the gastrointestinal tract and shedding primarily occurring via the fecal-oral route.

To evaluate the accuracy of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test as the index of feline panleukopenia virus (FPV)-protective ability, sera from 153 FPV-vaccinated cats aged ≥7 months with HI titer of <1:10-1:40, were examined for serum neutralizing (SN) antibody. SN antibody was detected (≥1:10) in 33 (62.3%) of 53 HI antibody-negative cats, and ranged <1:10-1:160. This suggests that FPV-antibody detection sensitivity of HI test is lower than SN test, and SN test is more suitable for the assessment of FPV-vaccine effect than HI test especially in cats with negative or low HI titer. SN titer w
