Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) causes feline panleukopenia (FP), a highly contagious and often fatal disease in domestic cats. This study investigated FPV detection, associated epidemiological factors, and partial VP2 genetic characteristics among clinically suspected cats presented in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Exploratory molecular docking was also performed to compare predicted VP2-transferrin receptor type-1 interactions in feline and canine systems. FPV DNA was detected in 83 of 180 clinically suspected cats (46.11%). Multivariable analysis revealed higher odds of FPV PCR positivity in

Comparative studies of species-derived cytokines remain limited in endangered carnivores. We cloned six immune-related cytokines from Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), with sequence analysis revealing >90% identity across Felidae. Among all tested cytokines, IL-15 demonstrated superior and sustained lymphocyte-stimulatory activity at 200 ng/mL. To investigate antiviral potential, F81 cells were pretreated with IL-15 and challenged with feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). Mechanistic studies revealed that IL-15 attenuated virus-induced apoptosis by modulating key regulatory proteins: downreg

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV) is the primary causative agent of a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting domestic cats and other felids. The increasing isolation of species-specific FPLV variants from multiple host species has garnered considerable attention, highlighting the need to investigate their genetic diversity. In this study, three FPLV isolates were obtained and phylogenetically classified into two distinct FPLV-China groups within separate clusters. Compared to the prototype FPLV (M38246.1), these isolates exhibited seven amino acid substitutions in the NS1 (n = 6)

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adding inactivated parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) to standard treatment (ST), as well as the combination of ST + iPPVO + filgrastim, in cats infected with feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). The study involved four groups: a control group (Group A), an ST group (Group B), an ST + iPPVO + filgrastim group (Group C) and an ST + iPPVO group (Group D). The control group included 10 cats and each treatment group included 8 cats of various breeds and sexes, aged 0-10 months. To assess treatment efficacy, haematological parameters were analysed before and af

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) causes severe, highly contagious infectious diseases in domestic cats, yet the comprehensive pathogenic mechanisms of circulating field isolates remain incompletely elucidated. Here, two contemporary FPV field strains (F513 and F1105) were isolated and genetically characterized from clinical samples of FPV vaccinated diarrheic cats. In vivo pathogenicity assays demonstrated that both strains induced typical FPV clinical signs, with viral replication predominantly localized to the gastrointestinal tract and shedding primarily occurring via the fecal-oral route.

To evaluate the accuracy of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test as the index of feline panleukopenia virus (FPV)-protective ability, sera from 153 FPV-vaccinated cats aged ≥7 months with HI titer of <1:10-1:40, were examined for serum neutralizing (SN) antibody. SN antibody was detected (≥1:10) in 33 (62.3%) of 53 HI antibody-negative cats, and ranged <1:10-1:160. This suggests that FPV-antibody detection sensitivity of HI test is lower than SN test, and SN test is more suitable for the assessment of FPV-vaccine effect than HI test especially in cats with negative or low HI titer. SN titer w

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) infection is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease of cats, characterized by intestinal injury, bone marrow suppression and systemic inflammatory alterations. This study evaluated the diagnostic utility of serum procalcitonin (PCT), serum amyloid A (SAA), selected biochemical variables and hematology-derived inflammatory indices in cats naturally infected with FPV. Fifty-nine cats were enrolled between February 2024 and December 2025, including 28 cats with naturally occurring FPV infection and 31 healthy controls. FPV infection was diagnosed using

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether hyperinoculation of cats with a feline herpesvirus-1, calicivirus, and panleukopenia virus (FVRCP) vaccine could be used as a model to study interstitial nephritis and to assess humoral and cell-mediated immune responses toward vaccinal α-enolase.
ANIMALS: 6 healthy young adult purpose-bred research cats.
PROCEDURES: Baseline renal cortical biopsies, whole blood, serum, and urine were collected prior to administration of a commercial FVRCP parenteral vaccine. Vaccine hyperinoculation was defined as a total of 8 vaccinations given at 2-week intervals over a 14-wee

The Protoparvovirus carnivoran 1 viral species includes relevant pathogens as feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) and canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2), which are mainly responsible for immunosuppression and gastroenteritis in domestic and wild carnivores. Differently to FPV, CPV is frequently subjected to mutations. To date, the original antigenic type CPV-2 is mainly used in vaccine production, while field strains have been progressively replaced by the CPV antigenic variants 2a, 2b, and 2c. In recent years, additional distinctive mutations have been identified in different CPV antigenic variant

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), also known as feline parvovirus, is a very common viral disease in cats, characterized by its high case fatality rate, for which the establishment of clear prognostic thresholds is complicated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical relevance of different demographical, hematological, and biochemical variables and indexes obtained at hospital admission as potential prognostic factors for survival. A study was carried out of 58 cats diagnosed with FPV between 2017 and 2025 at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Zaragoza. Variables

Feline panleukopenia (FPL), a highly contagious and frequently fatal disease of cats, is caused by Feline parvovirus (FPV) and Canine parvovirus (CPV). We characterised the diversity of these Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 variants in 18 faecal samples collected from domestic cats with FPL during an outbreak, using targeted parvoviral DNA metagenomics to a mean depth of >10,000 × coverage per site. All samples comprised FPV alone. Compared with the reference FPV genome, isolated in 1967, 44 mutations were detected. Ten of these were nonsynonymous, including 9 in nonstructural genes and one in VP1

Electron microscopic observation was carried out on epithelial cells of Lieberkühn's crypts of cats naturally affected with feline panleukopenia. The most important change was the replication of feline panleukopenia. The most important change was the replication of feline panleukopenia virus in the nucleus with associated alterations in the lining epithelial cells of the crypts. In these cells in the early stage of infection, virus particles 20 nm in average diameter were found either singly or in small regularly arrayed clusters everywhere in the markedly swollen nucleus. In the course of inf

Concurrent infection with cowpox and feline parvovirus was diagnosed in a 5-month-old male European Short Hair cat. Microscopical examination of the facial skin, ears and foot pads revealed multifocal to coalescing, ulcerative to necrotizing dermatitis and panniculitis with ballooning epidermal degeneration and eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Immunohistochemistry, polymerase chain reaction testing and virus isolation confirmed infection with a strain of cowpox virus similar to that isolated from a cat in Germany 5 years previously. Lymphoid tissues were depleted and there was catarr

Vaccines protect cats from serious diseases by inducing antibodies and cellular immune responses. Primary vaccinations and boosters are given according to vaccination guidelines provided by industry and veterinary organizations, based on minimal duration of immunity (DOI). For certain diseases, particularly feline panleukopenia, antibody titres correlate with protection. For feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus, a similar correlation is absent, or less clear. In this review, the European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD) presents current knowledge and expert opinion on the use of anti

Feline parvovirus (FPV) causes severe gastroenteritis and leukopenia in cats; the outcome is poor. Information regarding specific treatments is lacking. Class A CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG-A) are short single-stranded DNAs, stimulating type I interferon production. In cats, CpG-A induced an antiviral response in vivo and inhibited FPV replication in vitro. The aim was to prospectively investigate the effects of CpG-A on survival, clinical score, hematological findings, antiviral response (cytokines), viremia, and fecal shedding (real-time qPCR) in cats naturally infected with FPV. Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) causes severe enteric and systemic disease in cats, with particular importance in shelter environments where susceptible kittens, high population turnover, environmental contamination, and variable vaccination histories increase infection pressure. Recent virome and microbiome studies suggest that FPV-associated enteritis may occur within a broader context of viral co-detection and intestinal microbial disturbance, but direct FPV-specific bacteriome evidence remains limited. This review aims to synthesize current evidence on FPV-associated enteritis in shelter

Neurologic manifestations other than cerebellar hypoplasia are rarely associated with feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) infection in cats. Here the authors describe lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis and neuronal necrosis in 2 cats autopsied after exhibiting ataxia and nystagmus. Gross changes consisted of cerebellar herniation through the foramen magnum, with flattening of cerebrocortical gyri and narrowing of sulci. Histologically, lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis, extensive neuronal necrosis, and neuroaxonal degeneration with digestion chambers were present in the telencephalon and b

Feline parvovirus infection, caused by feline parvovirus and canine parvovirus 2, is a highly contagious, life-threatening disease affecting cats. The available epidemiological data on parvovirus infection in cats in Egypt is limited. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to provide data concerning the epidemiological profile of cats infected with parvovirus, including the prevalence of parvovirus infection in cats in three Egyptian provinces (Sohag, Assiut, and Cairo) and the associated risk factors. Using rapid antigen tests of fecal samples and conventional PCR, the overall prevalence
