BACKGROUND: Menstrual irregularity (MI) is common in female athletes and is a component of the Female Athlete Triad (Triad). Many athletes with the Triad are started on hormonal contraceptives (HC) for MI, but this interferes with the ability to monitor menstrual cycle regularity and can mask other causes of MI. There are limited studies investigating the relationship between MI, HC use, and injury in female collegiate athletes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of and relationship between HC use, MI, and bone stress injuries in female collegiate athletes in the United States.
DESIGN: Cro

Teenaged girls constitute the fastest growing segment of children and adolescents participating in organized athletics. Adolescent girls appear to have similar injury rates as boys in comparable activities but different injury patterns. To properly diagnose and manage athletic injuries in adolescent girls, pediatric health care providers must be aware of these differences, especially as the literature and their knowledge base may be skewed to the traditional predominance of males in sport. This review identifies athletic injuries that are unique to or especially common in adolescent girls, inc

BACKGROUND: Exercise is an osteogenic stimulus that should increase bone mineral density (BMD) and protect against injury. However, some female athletes have lower BMD and increased bone stress injury (BSI) risk. Impaired bone health seen in athletes may be explained by low energy availability as described by concepts of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and Female Athlete Triad (Triad).
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the relationship between RED-S/Triad risk factors and BSI to high-risk (femoral neck, sacrum) and low-risk (other) bones.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey and retrospective ch

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), driven by problematic low energy availability (LEA), is common in adolescent athletes of all genders and sports and is associated with negative effects across multiple organ systems. In recent years, best practices for the screening, clinical evaluation, and management of RED-S health consequences have evolved for both female and male athletes.
RECENT FINDINGS: LEA significantly affects physiological systems and sports performance and increases the likelihood of missed training due to illness. LEA has also been associated with hi

Disordered eating behavior (DE) and eating disorders (EDs) are of great concern because of their associations with physical and mental health risks and, in the case of athletes, impaired performance. The syndrome originally known as the Female Athlete Triad, which focused on the interaction of energy availability, reproductive function, and bone health in female athletes, has recently been expanded to recognize that Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) has a broader range of negative effects on body systems with functional impairments in both male and female athletes. The female athlete triad (FAT) is a disorder involving greater energy expenditure than energy consumption leading to 1) low energy availability (EA) with or without disordered eating 2) menstrual irregularities or amenorrhea and 3) low bone mineral density. Consequences of FAT include osteoporosis, stress fractures, increased cardiovascular risk, infertility, and negative psychological effects. The key risk factor for FAT is inadequate caloric intake when compared to the amount and intensity of exercise. All female athletes should be screened at least annually at pre-participation physicals or

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea is a diagnosis of exclusion that is common in female athletes, particularly those participating in aesthetic sports (ballet, other dance genres, figure skating, and gymnastics) and endurance sports (cross-country running). Although common, it should be considered abnormal even in the high-level elite athlete. Amenorrhea in combination with low energy availability and low bone density is labeled "the Female Athlete Triad." Studies have demonstrated numerous long-term consequences of athletes suffering from all or a portion of this triad, including increased ra

Background and objectives: Para-sports have become increasingly competitive, necessitating greater physical activity; secondary disorder prevention is therefore crucial. Among secondary disorders, the female athlete triad (FAT) is defined as low energy availability (EA), menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density (BMD); although studied in able-bodied athletes, reports on female para-athletes are scarce. We retrospectively investigated the FAT in wheelchair basketball players in the Japanese national team. Materials and Methods: Thirteen female wheelchair basketball players (mean age:

Over the past two and a half decades, a substantial shift has occurred in the understanding of disordered eating and eating disorders among athletes. Research has gradually moved beyond the concept of the female athlete triad towards the model of relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), which recognizes low energy availability as a key factor affecting both athletes' health and performance. The aim of this study is to review the international literature published between 2000 and 2025 on disordered eating and eating disorders in athletes, with particular emphasis on prevalence, the contempo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adolescence and young adulthood are a critical period in the life of women for optimizing long-term bone health. Young athletes lead a demanding lifestyle with increased dietary requirements to meet the robust demands of energy expenditure to maintain a state of energy balance. During a time of fast paced changes and unpredictable societal demands on young athletes, it is important to review the severe consequences of energy deficiency and options for adequate management.
RECENT FINDINGS: This review focuses on hormonal adaptations that occur in energy deficient female athl

Female athletes have unique risk factors for injury in both contact and noncontact sports. There are anatomic, neuromuscular, and biologic differences between the sexes that cause female athletes to experience certain injuries during sports at higher frequencies than their male counterparts. Understanding injury patterns specific to female athletes is crucial for developing prevention strategies, improving training protocols, and ensuring better recovery outcomes. This research can assist medical professionals, coaches, and training staff with creating tailored approaches to injury prevention

The Female Athlete Triad (Triad) and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) are conditions associated with low energy availability (EA) that can lead to menstrual dysfunction, impaired bone health, and metabolic disturbances. This case report describes the remission of Triad in a professional triathlete during the COVID-19 pandemic. A 24-year-old female triathlete was evaluated in 2018. She reported bulimia nervosa from 12-15 years old and hypothalamic amenorrhea since she was 21 years old. Her training volume was approximately 20 hours per week (swimming, cycling, and running), and the a

Women are increasingly participating in more and more sporting activities. For years, women athletes have been treated as the "female" equivalent of male athletes, with similar medical approaches but this is changing. The concept that women are unique in their "athletic arena" is further underscored with emerging scientific evidence--from the physiologic details not visible to the eye, to the more overt biomechanical and anatomic differences. We review a handful of conditions active women potentially may encounter: pregnancy, the female athlete triad, patellofemoral pain, potential injuries to

CONTEXT: The female athlete triad describes the interrelatedness of energy availability, menstrual function, and bone density. Although associations between triad components and musculoskeletal injury (INJ) have been reported in collegiate athletes, limited information exists about menstrual irregularity (MI) and INJ in the high school population.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of and relationship between MI and INJ in high school athletes.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: High schools.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: The sample consisted of 249 female athletes from 3 high s

The diet of many athletes is inadequate due to overly restrictive habits and an obsession with losing weight in order to maintain a particular level of body weight. Many female athletes, particularly those who participate in sports that emphasize leanness (gymnastics, distance running, diving, figure skating and classical ballet), have suboptimal energy and nutrient intakes and are at risk of compromised nutritional status, including fatigue, dehydration, nutrient inadequacies, delayed growth and an impaired immunocompetence. It is very well known that active women and girls who are driven to

Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are common among athletes and have high rates of recurrence. However, risk factors for multiple or recurrent BSIs remain understudied. Thus, we aimed to explore whether energy availability, menstrual function, measures of bone health, and a modified Female Athlete Triad Cumulative Risk Assessment (CRA) tool are associated with a history of multiple BSIs. We enrolled 51 female runners (ages 18-36 years) with history of ≤1 BSI (controls; n = 31) or ≥3 BSIs (multiBSI; n = 20) in this cross-sectional study. We measured lumbar spine, total hip, and femoral neck areal bon

BACKGROUND: Identifying the risk factors associated with a bone stress injury (BSI), including stress reactions and stress fractures, may aid in targeting those at increased risk and in formulating prevention guidelines for exercising girls and women.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of single or combined risk factors as defined by the female athlete triad-a syndrome involving 3 interrelated spectrums consisting of energy availability, menstrual function, and bone mass-with the incidence of BSIs in a multicenter prospective sample of 4 cohorts of physically active girls and women.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The female athlete triad is often found in sports that value leanness and aesthetics and can lead to adverse health effects. We aimed to compare knowledge and risk of the triad among adolescent figure skaters, dancers, and runners.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We advertised our survey on social media platforms: sports-specific forums; Facebook; and Instagram. We received 928 responses. We included female figure skaters, dancers, and runners aged 25 years or younger (N = 712). We asked participants to name the triad components and dichotomized know

Background: The Female Athlete Triad is the connection between energy deficiency with or without an eating disorder, menstrual disturbances, and bone loss that is found in female athletes. Affected women can have significant short- and long-term health consequences, such as decreased athletic performance, infertility, and osteoporosis. These sequelae can be minimized with early intervention, which requires both an understanding of the Female Athlete Triad and screening practices. Athletic trainers (ATs) are an important part of the athlete's care team with frequent interactions with patients.
