[Arterial supply of the femoral condyles].

INTRODUCTION: The most frequent site for aseptic bone necrosis and osteochondrosis dissecans in the human knee joint is the medial femoral condyle. The aim of this study is to analyze the three-dimensional vascularization of the human knee joint and to find out if there are any differences in the blood supply of the medial and lateral femoral condyles which may explain the preponderance of aseptic bone necrosis in the medial side. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The femoral arteries of 14 unfixed lower extremities have been injected with epoxy resin. After documentation of the extraosseous course of th

Macrophage subtypes in symptomatic carotid artery and femoral artery plaques.

OBJECTIVE: To compare differences in macrophage heterogeneity and morphological composition between atherosclerotic plaques obtained from recently symptomatic patients with carotid artery disease and femoral plaques from patients with severe limb ischemia. DESIGN: Experimental study. METHODS: Plaques were obtained from 32 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy and 25 patients undergoing common femoral endarterectomy or lower limb bypass. Macrophages and T cell numbers were detected in plaque sections by immunohistochemistry and anti CD68 and CD3 antibodies. Dual staining for CD68 and M1-

Femoral artery pseudoaneurysm after carotid artery stenting: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Pseudoaneurysm, the most common complication of femoral artery catheterization, involves the formation of a space between the lumen and the surrounding fibrous tissue through the damaged arterial wall. In patients treated with antiplatelet and anticoagulant agents, the incidence of vascular complications increases with the increasing use of minimally invasive procedures. PATIENT CONCERNS: We experienced 2 cases of procedure-induced pseudoaneurysms. A 79-year-old man with right hemiparesis visited our hospital. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed acute left middle cerebral arter

Occult femoral artery injury in relation to fracture of the femoral shaft.

Recognized injury of the femoral artery occurs in two per cent of patients with fracture of the femoral shaft. Delay in detection of these arterial injuries has led to unsatisfactory results in a young group of patients. Therefore, 40 patients who had suffered fracture of the femoral shaft 6-20 months (mean 13 months) prior to examination, were haemodynamically assessed using Doppler ankle/arm pressure indices to determine the incidence of occult femoral artery injury. Six patients (15%) exhibited haemodynamically significant abnormalities all in relation to previously injured limbs.

The femoral nerve and its relationship to the lateral circumflex femoral artery.

Small branches of the femoral artery in the femoral triangle are not palpable and could increase the risk of intravascular injection during femoral nerve (FN) block. I evaluated the position of the lateral circumflex femoral artery (LCFA), a lateral branch of the femoral artery, in relationship to accepted landmarks for FN blockade, including the inguinal ligament, inguinal crease, and FA. Forty cadaver lower extremities were dissected. In 50% of specimens, the LCFA, as it crossed the FN, was within 1 cm of the inguinal crease, the recommended level for needle insertion for FN blockade. The me

Stent placement for severe stenosis in the deep femoral artery with the occluded superficial femoral and popliteal arteries.

In both superficial and deep femoral artery involvement, where angioplasty of the former is not suitable or feasible, angioplasty of the latter seems to be the method of choice and is a less invasive and efficient treatment particularly for limb threatening ischemia, an appropriate obstruction morphology provided. The authors describe a case of a 73-year-old man, with a rest pain of the foot and intermittent cyanosis of the toe, who underwent stent placement with transluminal angioplasty for severe stenosis in the deep femoral artery with the occluded superficial femoral and popliteal artery.

Correlation of internal jugular vein, common carotid artery, femoral artery and femoral vein diameters with central venous pressure.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to detect the correlation of central venous pressure (CVP) with the internal jugular vein (IJV), common carotid artery (CCA), femoral vein (FV), and femoral artery (FA) diameters measured with ultrasound (USG) in patients under mechanical ventilation to evaluate whether they are suitable to be used as an alternative low-cost and noninvasive method for the detection of CVP. METHODS: A total of 40 patients aged from 18 to 90 who had been receiving therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU) were included in the study. Central venous catheter was placed into the patient

A femoral vein-femoral artery loop technique for aortic dilatation in children.

Balloon aortic dilatation is now a recognized therapy for aortic stenosis in children. Using retrograde approaches with either single or double balloons, successful dilatation can be readily achieved, but with little control of balloon position across the valve. We describe a femoral vein-femoral artery loop technique via a transseptal approach which facilitates antegrade crossing of the stenotic aortic valve and allows optimal balloon control and simultaneous pressure gradient recording during the procedure.

Femoral Artery Thrombosis After Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization.

Femoral artery thrombosis (FAT) is an adverse event post-catheterization. We decided to study the incidence and risk factors of FAT before and after initiation of a pulse loss monitoring program. All cardiac catheterization cases performed using femoral arterial vascular access were retrospectively reviewed. The study period was divided into two eras: before (era 1), and after the initiation of the protocol (era 2). The primary outcome was FAT requiring therapy. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with FAT. Receiver operating charac

Prosthetic graft infections involving the femoral artery.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic graft infection is a major complication of peripheral vascular surgery. We investigated the experience of a single institution over 10 years with bypass grafts involving the femoral artery to determine the incidence and risk factors for prosthetic graft infection. METHODS: A retrospective cohort single-institution review of prosthetic bypass grafts involving the femoral artery from 2001 to 2010 evaluated patient demographics, body mass index, comorbidities, indications, location of bypass, type of prosthetic material, case urgency, and previous ipsilateral bypass or per

Arteriosclerotic femoral artery aneurysms. A short review.

True arteriosclerotic aneurysms of the femoral artery are rare but they are dangerous lesions that may thrombose, embolise or rupture. They are often bilateral and frequently the patient has other aneurysms in the abdominal aortic or popliteal artery. True femoral aneurysms were originally classified by Cutler and Darling in 1973 as type 1 and type 2 according to their relationship to the common femoral bifurcation. Case reports of isolated superficial and profunda femoral artery aneurysms have been published, but these are exceedingly rare although isolated aneurysms of the profunda femoris a

Ruptured aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery.

OBJECTIVE: True isolated "arteriosclerotic" aneurysms of the superficial femoral artery are rare. One case of isolated superficial femoral artery aneurysm and review of literature is reported. DESIGN: Case report and review of the literature. SETTING: Hospitalized care. PATIENT: An 80-year old man presenting with rupture of superficial femoral artery aneurysm was observed and treated with graft interposition, which resulted in limb salvage. INTERVENTION: Removal of the aneurysm and replacing of the arterial aneurysmatic segment by interposition of a polytetrafluoroethylene prosthetic graft

An ultrasound-based femoral artery calcification score.

OBJECTIVE: Duplex ultrasound (US) of the lower extremities is commonly used to assess patients with lower extremity atherosclerosis. Arterial calcification can often be visualized in these images; however, efforts to quantify its extent have been limited. We, thus, sought to develop a new scoring system to measure calcification on duplex US studies of the femoral artery and correlate it with standard computed tomography (CT)-based methods. We then made preliminary attempts to correlate US-based femoral artery calcification scores with limb-specific outcomes in patients with peripheral arterial

Common Femoral Artery Curvature During Hip Flexion.

PURPOSE: To assess the conformational changes of the common femoral artery (CFA) during hip joint flexion in patients without atherosclerosis. METHODS: Patients who underwent digital subtraction angiography for suspicion of arterial endofibrosis between 2007 and 2011 were retrospectively searched. Angiographic images were analyzed by two independent readers. The CFA was divided into four segments of equal length, and the segment containing the folding point was noted. Segments 1 and 2 were located in the proximal half of the CFA and segments 3 and 4 in the distal half. Readers assessed the CF

Re-Norwood operation using femoral artery cannulation.

Re-Norwood operation is technically difficult to perform and is a high risk procedure due to the underlying hypocardiac function. Herein, we describe our successful re-Norwood operation approach in a 6-month old infant with persistent severe cyanosis and aortic re-coarctation. Our procedure was performed using femoral artery cannulation to protect cerebrospinal and lower body perfusion. Safe reopening of the chest was achieved, despite strong adhesions due to prior surgeries. Our repair and anastomosis techniques are described in detail. Cardiac circulation and function improved post-surgery.
