The fractures of the distal femur are classified as extra-articular fractures (type A), partial articular fractures (type B), and complete articular fractures (type C). The aims of operative treatment are anatomical reconstruction of the articular surfaces, restoration of rotational and axial alignment, stable fixation of the condyles to the shaft of the femur and early functional aftercare. Techniques and implants for treating intra-articular fractures lies in the reduction of the joint fragments and fixation with lag screws. For the treatment of the extra-articular fractures different approa

INTRODUCTION: Distal femoral replacement (DFR) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are surgical options for comminuted distal femur fractures. Comparative outcomes of these techniques are limited. The aims of this study were to compare implant survivorship, perioperative factors, and clinical outcomes of DFR vs. ORIF for comminuted distal femur fractures.
METHODS: Ten patients treated with rotating hinge DFRs for AO/OTA 33-C fractures from 2005 to 2015 were identified and matched 1:2 based on age and sex to 20 ORIF patients. Patients treated with DFR and ORIF had similar ages (80

BACKGROUND: Multifocal fractures of the femur are uncommon injuries and present unique management challenges. Combined ipsilateral fractures of the femoral shaft and femoral neck or the femoral shaft and distal femur have been described. The combination of noncontiguous ipsilateral femoral neck, femoral shaft, and distal femoral articular injuries, however, has not been described. The purposes of this report are to document the incidence and characteristics of this injury and to present a treatment rationale.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted at a Level I trauma center.

INTRODUCTION: Good results have been published by researchers with distal femur nail, dynamic condylar screw and even addition of a medial plate to a distal femur locking plate for treating distal femur fractures. By this study, we explore the capability of a distal femur locking plate to counter distal femur fractures of extra- articular, partial or intra- articular nature. Positive results have been published by various groups from all over the world.
AIM: To study the functional and radiological outcome of distal femoral fractures in skeletally mature patients treated by open reduction and

Sixty-two patients treated for distal femoral fractures from 1969-1976 were re-examined, after a mean follow-up period of 5 years, to study deformities, gonarthrosis and function. These fractures occur mainly in elderly persons with bone fragility due to age and disease. The deformities were analysed from precisely defined radiographic projections. An anatomical classification into supracondylar, unicondylar and bicondylar fractures, with subdivisions for undisplaced and displaced fractures was used. A special group for transcondylar fractures was included. Displaced bicondylar fractures mostl

PURPOSE: Subtrochanteric fractures of the femur are being managed successfully with various intramedullary and extramedulary implants with reasonable success. However, these implants require precise placement under image intensifier guidance, which exposes the surgeon to substantial amount of radiation. It also restricts the management of these fractures at peripheral centers where facility of image intensifiers is not available. Keeping this in mind we designed this study to identify if contralateral reversed distal femoral locking plate can be used successfully without the use of image inten

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the frequency and potential risk factors associated with the development of distal femoral valgus deformity following plate fixation of diaphyseal femoral fractures in children.
METHODS: Records of eighty-five skeletally immature patients who underwent plate fixation of a diaphyseal femoral fracture at a tertiary-care pediatric center from January 2003 to December 2010 were reviewed. Demographic data and clinical information were analyzed. Radiographic measurement of the distance from the distal plate edge to the distal femoral physis and of the anatomic la

The incidence of periprosthetic and native distal femoral fractures is rising with the increasing utilization of total knee arthroplasty and an aging global population. These injuries present significant clinical challenges, most commonly affecting elderly patients. While fixation-based strategies remain widely employed, distal femoral replacement has emerged as an increasingly utilized alternative. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine the current indications, implant considerations, and clinical evidence supporting the use of distal femoral replacement in the management of both

BACKGROUND: Distal femur fractures are considered challenging to manage, particularly in geriatric patients. Double plating (DP) is a technique that helps with earlier rehabilitation and return to preinjury level of activity. Distal femoral replacement (DFR) is an alternative technique in the management of these fractures that may help to solve problems like associated knee osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and severely comminuted condyles. The current study compares the functional and radiological outcomes of DFR and DP in the management of these fractures among geriatric patients.

Periprosthetic supracondylar femur fractures following total knee arthroplasty are infrequent, but challenging to clinicians. In this article, we present a 74-year-old female case of bilateral supracondylar femoral periprosthetic fractures which were treated with locking plates. The fractures were healed with osseous union, the range of motion was 0-110° for each knee, and there was a 6° residual varus deformity in the left knee. The functional results were excellent during two-year follow-up. Open reduction and locking plate fixation are effective treatment methods for periprosthetic supracon

Fractures of the distal femur comprise 4 per cent of all femoral fractures. The records of a consecutive series, from 1969 to 1976, of 135 adult patients with 137 fractures, not caused by malignant disease, were reviewed for age, sex, previous disease, type of fracture, treatment and end-result. Eighty-four per cent of the patients were over 50 years of age, 19 per cent had other general factors predisposing them to fracture, and 42 per cent had previous or current disease of the fractured leg. Eight-three fractures were caused by moderate and 52 by severe trauma. Unicondylar fractures were se

Fractures of the femoral shaft comprise about 1.6% of all bony injuries in children and are the most common pediatric orthopaedic injury that requires hospitalization. The treatment of femoral fractures in children is largely dependent on the child's age and size and takes into account multiple considerations: the child's weight, associated injuries, the fracture pattern, the mechanism of injury, institutional or surgeons' preferences, and economic and social concerns. In addition, during the past two decades, there has been a dramatic change favoring surgical fixation rather than casting beca

INTRODUCTION: The majority of periprosthetic fractures around the knee occur at the supracondylar region of the distal femur. Fixation of distal femoral fractures in osteoporotic bone with short segment remains a challenge, especially after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Internal fixation of these fractures using locking plates has become popular. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a consecutive series of periprosthetic supracondylar femoral fractures treated with locked periarticular plate fixation with regard to surgical procedure, complications and clinical outcome.

New, minimally invasive methods of stabilizing distal femur fractures offer the advantage of superior bone healing rates and lower infection rates despite of a decreased necessity of bone grafts. In comparison to conventional plating, the employed indirect reduction method does not lead to an increase in postoperative malalignments. The Less Invasive Stabilizing System (LISS) and the Distal Femur Nail (DFN) are introduced as examples of these new methods of stabilization. Although bone biology is widely respected by these new implants and operation techniques, distal femur fractures remain a s

The objective of this study was to review the use of intramedullary supracondylar (IMSC) nails for distal femoral fractures. We reviewed 24 fractures treated with second-generation IMSC nails. The fractures consisted of 18 type A1, one type A2, two type C1, one type C2, and two type C3 fractures. The relationships between clinical results and fracture type, approaches, and patient age were retrospectively reviewed. All fractures healed clinically and radiographically. Twenty-one patients maintained gait performance equivalent to that before injury. Average operating time was 108 min +/- 43 min

Distal femoral physeal fractures account for approximately 1% of all epiphyseal injuries. Complications include growth arrest and leg length discrepancy, malunion and deformity, and stiffness and knee instability. However, nonunion of such a fracture is exceedingly rare and has only been reported in patients with spinal dysraphism. We report a case of distal femoral physeal nonunion in a neurologically intact adolescent athlete. Initially, there was a delay in the diagnosis of this nondisplaced fracture, as the patient had normal roentgenograms. Additional imaging modalities (magnetic resonanc
