Anthelmintic resistance of horse strongyle nematodes to fenbendazole in Lithuania.

BACKGROUND: Control of strongyle infections presents a global challenge for horse practitioners due to the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR), however comprehensive information on AR in Lithuania is still lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the current situation of fenbendazole (FBZ) AR in horses at stable level in Lithuania. RESULTS: Faecal samples from 121 horses from six stables were examined using the Mini-FLOTAC method. Of these, 89 horses met the inclusion criteria that included strongyle faecal egg counts (FEC) exceeding 200 eggs per gram (EPG). Faecal egg count reduc

Glutathione-capped CdTe nanocrystals as probe for the determination of fenbendazole.

Water-soluble glutathione (GSH)-capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized. In pH 7.1 PBS buffer solution, the interaction between GSH-capped CdTe QDs and fenbendazole (FBZ) was investigated by spectroscopic methods, including fluorescence spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) spectroscopy. In GSH-capped CdTe QDs solution, the addition of FBZ results in the fluorescence quenching and RRS enhancement of GSH-capped CdTe QDs. And the quenching intensity (enhanced RRS intensity) was proportional to the concentration of FBZ in a cert

The lack of behavioral effects of fenbendazole: a medication for pinworm infection.

Pinworm infection in rodent laboratories is common and often treated with fenbendazole, which is effective and has a low toxicity level. However, very little is known about the behavioral effects of the drug. The purpose of this study was to determine the behavioral effects of fenbendazole on rats tested by using various conditioning and timing procedures. These behavioral effects were examined both between animals (i.e., control versus medicated treatments) and within animals (baseline-treatment-baseline design). Fenbendazole reduced the detection of pinworm eggs, and it had no significant be

Impact of fenbendazole resistance in Ascaridia dissimilis on the economics of production in turkeys.

Feed conversion efficiency is among the most important factors affecting profitable production of poultry.Infections with parasitic nematodes can decrease efficiency of production, making parasite control through the use of anthelmintics an important component of health management. In ruminants and horses, anthelmintic resistance is highly prevalent in many of the most important nematode species, which greatly impacts their control. Recently, we identified resistance to fenbendazole in an isolate of Ascaridia dissimilis, the most common intestinal helminth of turkeys. Using this drug-resistant

Aplastic anemia associated with trimethoprim-sulfadiazine and fenbendazole administration in a dog.

A dog that was treated with trimethoprim-sulfadiazine and fenbendazole developed transient aplastic anemia. The onset of bone marrow aplasia at 14 days after initiation of treatment and remission of it after cessation of treatment suggested that the aplasia was drug-induced. A hematologically normal dog treated with the same drug combination failed to develop hematologic dyscrasia. Because of the potential toxic effects of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine and/or fenbendazole, animals under treatment with this combination should be monitored by use of periodic CBC.

Efficacy of fenbendazole for endoparasite control in large herds of nondomestic ruminants.

An experimental 4% fenbendazole premix was milled into the feed of 55 nondomestic ruminants (37 antilopines, 12 hippotragines, and 6 caprines). Efficacy of the premix against endoparasites in the ruminants was determined by comparison with pre- and posttreatment fecal egg counts. Dosages calculated from feed consumption percentages were 3.6 to 8.5 mg/kg. Dosages less than 5 mg/kg resulted in 80% to 100% reductions in fecal egg counts, and dosages greater than 5 mg/kg resulted in 98% to 100% reductions in fecal egg counts. With all dosage groups considered, Strongyloides and Nematodirus eggs we

Fenbendazole and thiabendazole in cattle: partition of gastrointestinal absorption and pharmacokinetic behaviour.

Fenbendazole (FBZ) and thiabendazole (TBZ) were administered intraruminally with a single dose of an indigestible marker, chromium ethylenediaminetetra-acetate (Cr-EDTA), to cattle fitted with gastrointestinal cannulae. The amounts of anthelmintic leaving the rumen, abomasum and terminal ileum in digesta were derived by compartmental analysis of Cr-EDTA concentrations and integration of benzimidazole concentrations. TBZ was absorbed much more rapidly from the rumen than FBZ and only about 12% of the dose left the rumen in digesta compared with 30% of the FBZ. Approximately 10% and 8% of the TB

Preparation and evaluation of fenbendazole methyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes.

As an orally effective benzimidazole anthelmintic agent, fenbendazole was not only widely used in agriculture and animal husbandry to prevent and treat parasites, but also shows anti-cancer effects against several types of cancer, exhibits anti-cancer effects in paclitaxel and doxorubicin-resistant cancer cells. However, fenbendazole's poor in water solubility (0.3 µg/mL), limits its clinical applications. Even great efforts were made toward increasing its water solubility, the results were not significant to reach anti-cancer drug delivery requirement (5-10 mg/mL). Through single factor and o

SUSPECTED FENBENDAZOLE TOXICITY IN AN AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN (PELECANUS ERYTHRORHYNCHOS).

A wild-raised, 5.0-kg male American white pelican ( Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ) of unknown age presented for routine examination at both the start and completion of a 30-day quarantine period at a zoological park. Upon physical examination, the pelican was bright, alert, and responsive and in good body condition. Two complete blood counts and a plasma biochemistry did not reveal any clinically significant abnormalities. Whole-body radiographs were unremarkable. Two fecal flotations (28 days apart) confirmed the presence of ascarid-type eggs. Fenbendazole anthelmintic was prescribed (50 mg/kg p

Efficacy of fenbendazole against migrating Ascaris suum larvae in pigs.

Twenty-four weanling crossbred pigs were inoculated with 10,000 embryonated Ascaris suum eggs. The infection was aborted in 1 group (n = 8 pigs) with fenbendazole (3 mg/kg of body weight) given on postinfection days 2, 3, and 4 and in a 2nd group (n = 8 pigs) given fenbendazole at the same rate on postinfection days 6, 7, and 8; a 3rd group (n = 8 pigs) was not treated with fenbendazole. All pigs were necropsied at 24 days after they were inoculated. Fenbendazole was 99% effective against A suum larvae in the 2 treated groups. Early treated pigs had significantly higher daily weight gains (P l

Beyond fenbendazole: Molecular and integrated pathways for managing poultry ascarid resistance.

Collins et al. (2025) present important evidence of emerging fenbendazole (FBZ) resistance in Ascaridia galli and widespread resistance in Heterakis gallinarum. While the survey highlights an urgent production challenge, broader scientific and translational perspectives are needed. We emphasize three key areas: (i) genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying benzimidazole resistance in ascarids, which remain poorly defined compared to Haemonchus contortus and equine Parascaris; (ii) the One Health and regulatory implications of continued FBZ dependence in poultry production; and (iii) integrat

Risk Assessment of Human Consumption of Meat From Fenbendazole-Treated Pheasants.

Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole-class anthelmintic that is used for the control of immature and adult stages of internal parasites, such as nematodes and trematodes, in domestic food-animal species. It is not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for treating pheasants despite Syngamus trachea being one of the most prevalent nematodes that parasitize pheasants. Because it is a highly effective treatment, e.g., 90% effectiveness against S. trachea, and there are very few alternative therapeutic options, this anthelminthic is used in an extra-label manner in the pheasant ind

Strain-related effects of fenbendazole treatment on murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Parasitic infections are a concern in animal facilities, in view of their influence on physiological processes and the immune status of animals. Pinworms are effectively controlled with the anthelminthic fenbendazole (FBZ, [5-(phenylthio)-1H-benzamidazol-2-yl]carbamic acid methyl ester; C(15)H(13)N(3)O(2)S); however, questions remain as to whether prolonged FBZ exposure alters the disease course in specific experimental models, such as those pertaining to the immune system. We report that a three-month regimen of FBZ-medicated feed severely affected the onset and disease severity of murine exp

Occurrence of fenbendazole resistance in Parascaris spp. on breeding farms in Sweden.

Anthelmintic resistance is an increasing problem in many gastrointestinal parasites of grazing animals. Among these, the equine roundworm, Parascaris spp., has developed wide-spread resistance to macrocyclic lactones over the past decades. Additionally, there are recent observations of emerging treatment failure of both tetrahydropyrimidine and fenbendazole. Therefore, the aims of this study were to further investigate the occurrence of fenbendazole resistance on breeding farms and to explore potential management-related risk factors associated with resistance in Parascaris spp. in Sweden.
