We have reported previously that para-chlorophenylalanine prevented seizure manifestations in an inbred strain of mice genetically predisposed to audiogenic seizures. We now find that this protective effect is not limited to a particular inbred strain of susceptible animals but can be demonstrated in Swiss-Webster and CF No.1 strains which were not originally subject to audiogenic seizures but in which we have induced audiosusceptibility through maintenance on a low magnesium diet.

Brain serotonin depletion induced by peripheral parachlorophenylalanine (pCPA) is frequently used to evaluate the role of the central serotoninergic system in the regulation of a number of physiological functions, including the secretion of renin by the kidney. Premedication with PCPA antagonized in rats the anticonvulsant activity of Primidone and of other drugs against seizures evoked by electroshock. Only in the case of Primidone, however, the anticonvulsant activity could not be re-established by increasing the dosage. Our investigations have shown that PCPA caused a strong inhibition of the conversion of Primidone to phenobarbital, both in vivo and in vitro.

Hemicastration of male rats produced rapid changes in plasma testosterone (T) levels both in summer and in winter. Male Wistar rats maintained on a thiamine deficient diet showed the mouse-killing response (muricide).
