Evaluation of respiratory and cutaneous doses and urinary excretion of alkylphosphates by workers in greenhouses treated with omethoate, fenitrothion, and tolclofos-methyl.

This research evaluated exposure pathways across work tasks for three organophosphate pesticides in a group of greenhouse workers. During reentry in ornamental plant greenhouses, five male workers were monitored for five consecutive days. Skin contamination (excluding hands) was evaluated with nine pads of filter paper placed on the skin. Hand contamination was assessed by washing with 95% ethanol. Respiratory exposure was evaluated by personal air sampling. The respiratory dose was based on a lung ventilation of 20 L/min. The doses absorbed were estimated assuming 10% skin penetration and 100

Prevention of fenitrothion induced hepatic toxicity by saponarin via modulating TLR4/MYD88, JAK1/STAT3 and NF-κB signaling pathways.

Fenitrothion (FEN) is an organophosphate insecticidal agent that is considered as major source of organs toxicity. Saponarin (SAP) is a naturally occurring novel flavone that exhibits a wide range of medicinal properties. The current trial was conducted to evaluate the ameliorative potential of SAP against FEN instigated liver toxicity in rats. Thirty-two male albino rats were apportioned into four groups including control, FEN (10 mg/kg), FEN (10 mg/kg) + SAP (80 mg/kg), and SAP (80 mg/kg) alone treated group. It was revealed that FEN administration upregulated the gene expression of TNF-α, T

Fenitrothion induces glucose metabolism disorders in rat liver BRL cells by inhibiting AMPKα and IRS1/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Fenitrothion (FNT) is a common organophosphorus pesticide that is widely used in both agricultural and domestic pest control. FNT has been frequently detected in various environmental media, including the human body, and is a notable contaminant. Epidemiological investigations have recently shown the implications of exposure to FNT in the incidence of various metabolic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus in humans, indicating that FNT may be a potential endocrine disruptor. However, the effects of FNT exposure on glucose homeostasis and their underlying mechanisms in model organisms remain lar

Fenitrothion exposure induces hyperglycemia in juvenile rats: Impeded glycolysis and promoted gluconeogenesis mediated by acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate metabolism dysregulation.

Fenitrothion (FNT), an organophosphorus insecticide widely used in agriculture and household pest control, is closely associated with several glucose metabolism diseases. However, scientific knowledge about the mechanisms of FNT disturbance of glucose metabolism in puberty models remains poorly understood. Here, we show that 4-week-old SD rats exposed to 3.7 or 37 mg/kg bw/day FNT for 28 days exhibited hyperglycemia and hyperphagia, as well as impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance, which resulted from FNT's interference with insulin secretion, inhibition of glycolysis, and promotio

Effect of potassium dichromate and fenitrothion on hemoglobins of Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera, Chironomidae) larvae: potential biomarker of environmental monitoring.

In an attempt to identify Chironomus hemoglobins as biomarkers for environmental monitoring, alterations in the hemoglobins in Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae, exposed to potassium dichromate and fenitrothion, were investigated under laboratory conditions. The hemoglobins were evaluated in terms of their total contents by a cyanomethemoglobin procedure, individual components by electrophoresis of isoelectric focusing, and their oxidation by multi wavelength rapid-scanning spectrophotometry. The total hemoglobin contents increased at the high level of fenitrothion exposur

Susceptibility to DDT, malathion, fenitrothion and dieldrin of three flea species in the boyolali plague endemic area, Central Java, Indonesia.

Insecticide susceptibility tests with 4% DDT, 0.5% and 5.0% malathion, 1% fenitrothion, and 0.2% dieldrin impregnated papers were carried out with fleas spp. from the Boyolali plague zone. The field flea (Stivalius cognatus) which was highly susceptible to malathion before, has now been found to be resistant to the insecticide, but was found susceptible to the other three insecticides. The oriental rat flea (X. cheopis) which found previously highly resistant to DDT, was now found to be less resistant, and susceptible to other insecticides tested. Insecticide residues in Australian plague locusts (Chortoicetes terminifera Walker) after ultra-low volume aerial application of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion.

The need for locust control throughout eastern Australia during spring 2010 provided an opportunity to quantify residues of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion on nymphs of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera Walker. Residues were collected across the different physiological states--live, dead, and debilitated (characterized by ease of capture, erratic hopping, and the inability to remain upright)--of locust nymphs observed following exposure to fenitrothion. The time course of residue depletion for 72 h after spraying was quantified, and residue-per-unit dose valu

Malaria control with residual fenitrothion in Central Java, Indonesia: an operational-scale trial using both full and selective coverage treatments.

An operational-scale trial, using residual fenitrothion, for control of malaria was carried out in Central Java, Indonesia, from 1980 to 1982. Two areas, each comprising about 70 km(2) and a population of about 50 000, were treated with fenitrothion (40% water dispersible powder) at a target dosage of 2 g/m(2) for 3 cycles at 6-monthly intervals. One area was treated with full coverage (i.e., the interiors of houses and cattle shelters were sprayed to a height of 3 m) for 2 cycles, followed by a third cycle with selective coverage (i.e., the interiors of houses were sprayed with one 75 cm hori

Acceleration of nucleophilic attack on an organophosphorothioate neurotoxin, fenitrothion, by reactive counterion cationic micelles. Regioselectivity as a probe of substrate orientation within the micelle.

31P NMR and UV-vis spectrometric evidence has revealed an unexpected regioselectivity in the reaction of fenitrothion, 1, an organophosphorus pesticide, with the cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) surfactants CTAOH and CTAMINA, that incorporate the reactive counterions OH- and MINA- (the anti-pyruvaldehyde 1-oximate anion). While both micellar solutions accelerate decomposition of 1 compared to aqueous OH- alone, CTAMINA produced the largest rate enhancement (ca. 10(5)) at a pH (8.39) appropriate for environmental applications. In the absence of surfactant, reaction proceeds solely via the SN2(P) pa

Adsorptive stripping square wave voltammetry (Ad-SSWV) accomplished with second-order multivariate calibration determination of fenitrothion and its metabolites in river water samples.

A method, using stripping square wave voltammetry (Ad-SSWV), for the simultaneous determination of fenitrothion (FEN) and its metabolites: fenitrooxon (OXON) and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (3-MET) in environmental samples is reported. All three compounds produce, at mercury electrode (HMDE), an electrochemical signal due to an adsorptive-reductive process. The electrochemical approach shows a very high overlap degree for FEN and OXON voltammograms, however the adsorption kinetic profile could be used as an additional differential variable between both analytes. Acute oral toxicity of the organophosphorus pesticide fenitrothion to fat-tailed and stripe-faced dunnarts and its relevance for pesticide risk assessments in Australia.

The scarcity of information on the effects of pesticides on native Australian vertebrates constrains the development of biologically relevant risk assessments in Australia for the registration of pesticides. The concern that endemically old and unique Australian vertebrate fauna might display high sensitivity to pesticides used for locust control provoked examination of the acute oral toxicity of the organophosphorus pesticide fenitrothion for the fat-tailed dunnart, Sminthopsis crassicaudata (Gould 1844), and the stripe-faced dunnart, S. macroura (Gould 1845). Assembly of UiO-66 onto Co-doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles to activate peroxymonosulfate for efficient degradation of fenitrothion and simultaneous in-situ adsorption of released phosphate.

Although sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have shown great potential for the efficient degradation of various organic contaminants, there is few research on the removal of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) through SR-AOPs. In this work, Co-doped Fe3O4 magnetic particles encapsulated by zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Co-Fe3O4@UiO-66) were prepared and employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the elimination of fenitrothion (FNT) and the simultaneous in-situ adsorption of produced phosphate. The catalyst exhibited efficient catalytic performance, a

Effects of sublethal fenitrothion ingestion on cholinesterase inhibition, standard metabolism, thermal preference, and prey-capture ability in the Australian central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps, Agamidae).

The central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is a medium-sized lizard that is common in semiarid habitats in Australia and that potentially is at risk of fenitrothion exposure from use of the chemical in plague locust control. We examined the effects of single sublethal doses of this organophosphate (OP; low dose = 2.0 mg/kg; high dose = 20 mg/kg; control = vehicle alone) on lizard thermal preference, standard metabolic rate, and prey-capture ability. We also measured activities of plasma total cholinesterase (ChE) and acetylcholinesterase before and at 0, 2, 8, 24, 120, and 504 h after OP do

Quercetin Attenuates the Oxidative Injury-Mediated Upregulation of Apoptotic Gene Expression and Catecholaminergic Neurotransmitters of the Fetal Rats' Brain Following Prenatal Exposure to Fenitrothion Insecticide.

The association between gestational exposure to organophosphate and neurodevelopmental deficits is an area of particular interest, since the developing brain is sensitively susceptible to this neurotoxic pesticide. Instead, the neuroprotective role of quercetin has been suggested, but its exact protective mechanism against the developmental neurotoxicity of organophosphate did not previously notify. In this study, we have evaluated the anti-apoptotic role of quercetin against the developmental neurotoxicity of fenitrothion. Forty timed pregnant rats (from the 5th to the 19th day) were divided

Fenitrothion, an organophosphorous insecticide, impairs locomotory function and alters body temperatures in Sminthopsis macroura (Gould 1845) without reducing metabolic rates during running endurance and thermogenic performance tests.

Endemic Australian mammal species are exposed to pesticides used for locust control as they occupy the same habitat as the target insect. The authors examined the impact of an ultra-low volume formulation of the organophosphorous insecticide fenitrothion (O,O-dimethyl-O-[3-methyl-4-nitrophenol]-phosphorothioate) on a suite of physiological measures that affect the ability of animals to survive in free-living conditions: locomotory and thermogenic functions, metabolic performance, body mass, and hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. Potentiated toxicity of 2-sec-butylphenyl methylcarbamate (BPMC) by O,O-dimethyl O-(3-methyl-4-nitrophenyl)phosphorothioate (fenitrothion) in mice; relationship between acute toxicity and metabolism of BPMC.

Fenitrothion of oral subtoxic dose (100 mg/kg; 4 hr pretreatment) decreased acute oral LD50 of BPMC from 360 to 66 mg/kg in male mice. The treatment prolonged the hexobarbital sleeping time and increased the plasma BPMC concentrations. The BPMC toxicity and its plasma concentrations were significantly reduced by phenobarbital treatment (80 mg/kg/day, 2 days, ip). This treatment diminished the effects of fenitrothion on BPMC toxicity and plasma BPMC concentrations. BPMC was metabolized by mixed-function oxidases of the liver in vitro. The metabolism of BPMC was competitively inhibited by the ad

Symbiont-mediated insecticide resistance.

Development of insecticide resistance has been a serious concern worldwide, whose mechanisms have been attributed to evolutionary changes in pest insect genomes such as alteration of drug target sites, up-regulation of degrading enzymes, and enhancement of drug excretion. Here, we report a previously unknown mechanism of insecticide resistance: Infection with an insecticide-degrading bacterial symbiont immediately establishes insecticide resistance in pest insects. The bean bug Riptortus pedestris and allied stinkbugs harbor mutualistic gut symbiotic bacteria of the genus Burkholderia, which a
