Fenoterol hydrobromide (Berotec; formerly Th 1165a) is a sympathomimetic bronchodilator drug. Twenty subjects with mild to moderate reversible bronchospasm completed a double-blind multiple crossover study of single doses of 5 mg, 7.5 mg, and 10 mg of fenoterol hydrobromide, 24 mg of ephedrine, and placebo. Fenoterol is a β2-adrenoceptor (AR)-selective agonist that is commonly used to investigate relaxation responses mediated by β2-AR in smooth muscle preparations. QUESTION: What is the relative per microgram potency and side effect profile of the beta-agonists salbutamol and fenoterol?
METHOD: The relative bronchodilator (delta FEV1, V25, V50) potency and side effect profile (delta tremor, heart rate, breathlessness, BP) of nebulized salbutamol and fenoterol were evaluated by means of a randomized, double-blind, crossover, cumulative (50 to 2,500 micrograms) dose-response study. Both beta-agonists were administered to 12 patients with stable asthma over age 18 years with baseline FEV1 between 35 to 70 percent predicted.

The efficacy of fenoterol powder (Berotec, Boehringer-Ingelheim) was investigated in ten patients with moderate or severe asthma. Double-blind comparison to placebo powder showed a significant difference (p less than 0.05) between 30 to 180 min after a single dose of 0.2 mg. There was no difference between fenoterol powder and aerosol (0.2 mg). No adverse effects were encountered.

Studies have shown that, in patients with threatened premature labor, fenoterol and ritodrine are effective agents for delaying its onset. However, the side-effects of these drugs can be a problem. Report on two patients with postpartum pulmonary oedema and shock-syndrome subsequent to prepartum tocolytic therapy with Fenoterol in higher dosages. The possible pathogenetic interactions and the differential diagnosis of this status are discussed. Conclusions are drawn for the clinical use of tocolytic drugs.

Bronchodilatory response to inhaled fenoterol was studied in 15 hyperthyroid patients before and after successful treatment with antithyroid drugs. Baseline forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) were lower than the predicted values in 12 and 11 patients, respectively. UNLABELLED: To study the effectiveness of Fenoterol Hydrobromide in the treatment of threatened abortion a double blind trial was performed. A total of 112 patients was examined. To understand the receptor subtypes responsible for beta-adrenoceptor-mediated relaxation of guinea pig taenia caecum, we investigated the effect of fenoterol.
