Magnetite-apatite deposits are important sources of iron and other metals. A prominent example are the magnetite lavas at the El Laco volcano, Northern Chile. Their formation processes remain debated. Here, we test the genetic hypothesis that an Fe-rich melt separated from silicate magma and ascended along collapse-related fractures. We complement recent analyses with thermodynamic modelling to corroborate Fe-Si liquid immiscibility evident in melt inclusions at El Laco and present viscometry of Fe- and Si-rich melts to assess the time and length scales of immiscible liquid separation. Coupled reactions among chromium (Cr), organic matter (OM), and iron (Fe) minerals play significant roles in Cr and carbon (C) cycling in Cr-contaminated soils. Although the inhibitory effects of Cr or polysaccharides acid (PGA) on ferrihydrite transformation have been widely studied, mechanistic insights into detoxification of Cr(VI) and immobilization of Cr and C during the microbially mediated reductive transformation of ferrihydrite remain unclear. In this study, underlying sequestration mechanisms of Cr and C during dissimilatory Fe reduction at various Cr/Fe ratios were investigated. Sol

RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine), a nitramine explosive, is often found as a subsurface contaminant at military installations. Though biological transformations of RDX are often reported, abiotic studies in a defined medium are uncommon. The work reported here was initiated to investigate the transformation of RDX by ferrous iron (Fe(II)) associated with a mineral surface. RDX is transformed by Fe(II) in aqueous suspensions of magnetite (Fe3O4). Negligible transformation of RDX occurred when it was exposed to Fe(II) or magnetite alone. The sequential nitroso reduction products (MN

Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in paddy soils and play a key role in Cd retention. Recent studies report that pyrogenic carbon (PC) may largely affect the microbial transformation processes of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides, yet the impact of PC on the fate of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxide-associated Cd during redox fluctuations remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of PC on Cd retention during microbial (Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) transformation of Cd(II)-bearing ferrihydrite under varying redox conditions. The results showed that in the absence of PC, microbial reduction of ferrihydr

This study systematically investigated tetracycline (TC) degradation and the underlying nonradical activation mechanism in the magnetite/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, with particular emphasis on interfacial electron transfer. Under the selected operating conditions, up to 95.6% TC removal was achieved within 60 min. The system also exhibited good reusability and adaptability to different real-water matrices. Combined quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, and reactive species quantification consistently demonstrated that TC removal predominantly proceeds via a

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient that affects biological production. Iron-containing clay minerals are an important source of bioavailable iron. However, the dissolution of iron-containing clay minerals at temperatures below the freezing point has not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate the enhanced reductive dissolution of iron from a clay mineral in ice in the presence of iodide (I-) as the electron donor. The accelerated production of dissolved iron in the frozen state was irreversible, and the freeze concentration effect was considered the main driving force. Furthermore, the fo

Cr(VI) detoxification and organic matter (OM) stabilization are usually influenced by the biological transformation of iron (Fe) minerals; however, the underlying mechanisms of metal-reducing bacteria on the coupled kinetics of Fe minerals, Cr, and OM remain unclear. Here, the reductive sequestration of Cr(VI) and immobilization of fulvic acid (FA) during the microbially mediated phase transformation of ferrihydrite with varying Cr/Fe ratios were investigated. No phase transformation occurred until Cr(VI) was completely reduced, and the ferrihydrite transformation rate decreased as the Cr/Fe r

Interactions between aqueous ferrous iron (Fe(II)) and secondary Fe oxyhydroxides catalyze mineral recrystallization and/or transformation processes in anoxic soils and sediments, where oxyanions, such as silicate, are abundant. However, the effect and the fate of silicate during Fe mineral recrystallization and transformation are not entirely understood and especially remain unclear for lepidocrocite. In this study, we reacted (Si-)ferrihydrite (Si/Fe = 0, 0.05, and 0.18) and (Si-)lepidocrocite (Si/Fe = 0 and 0.08) with isotopically labeled 57Fe(II) (Fe(II)/Fe(III) = 0.02 and 0.2) at pH 7 for

Mineral transformations by two hyperthermophilic Fe(III)-reducing crenarchaea, Pyrodictium delaneyi and Pyrobaculum islandicum, were examined using synthetic nanophase ferrihydrite, lepidocrocite, and akaganeite separately as terminal electron acceptors and compared with abiotic mineral transformations under similar conditions. Spectral analyses using visible-near-infrared, Fourier-transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), Raman, and Mössbauer spectroscopies were complementary and revealed formation of various biomineral assemblages distinguishable from abiotic phases. Reactive iron (Fe) mineral coatings found in subsurface reduction-oxidation transition zones (RTZs) contribute to the attenuation of contaminants. An 18.3-m anoxic core was collected from the site, where constituents of concern (COCs) in groundwater included chlorinated solvents. Reactive Fe mineral coatings were found to be abundant in the RTZs. This research focused on evaluating reaction kinetics with anoxic sediments bearing ferrous mineral nano-coatings spiked with either tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), or 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB). Reaction kinetics with RTZ sedim

Here we revisit whether the common mixed-valent Fe mineral, magnetite, is a viable reductant for the abiotic natural attenuation of perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) in anoxic groundwater plumes. We measured PCE and TCE reduction by stoichiometric magnetite as a function of pH and Fe(ii) concentration. In the absence of added Fe(ii), stoichiometric magnetite does not reduce PCE and TCE over a three month period under anoxic conditions. When Fe(ii) is added to magnetite suspensions, PCE and TCE are reduced under Fe(ii) and pH conditions that appear to be controlled by the solu

Magnetite (Fe3O4) plays a pivotal role in the biogeochemical cycling of iron (Fe) and contaminant fate through interfacial electron transfer processes. While aqueous Fe(II)-magnetite interactions drive these environmentally critical redox reactions, the atomistic mechanisms governing electron transfer and isotopic exchange between aqueous Fe(II) and structural Fe(III) in magnetite during recrystallization remain elusive. Herein, this study combined Fe isotopic tracer experiments, 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural controls on Fe(II)-cat

Natural occurring ferrihydrite (Fh) nanoparticles have varying degrees of crystallinity, but how Fh crystallinity affects its transformation behavior remains elusive. Here, we investigated the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of Fh with different degrees of crystallinity (i.e., Fh-2h, Fh-12h, and Fh-85C). X-ray diffraction patterns of Fh-2h, Fh-12h, and Fh-85C exhibited two, five, and six diffraction peaks, respectively, indicating the order of crystallinity: Fh-2h < Fh-12h < Fh-85C. Fh with the lower crystallinity has a higher redox potential, corresponding to the faster Fe(II)-Fh interfacial

Sulfate-reducing bacteria play an important role in the geochemistry of iron (oxyhydr)oxide and arsenic (As) in natural environments; however, the associated reaction processes are yet to be fully understood. In this study, batch experiments coupled with geochemical, spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermodynamic analyses were conducted to investigate the dynamic coupling of ferrihydrite transformation and the associated As desorption/redistribution mediated by Desulfovibrio vulgaris (D. vulgaris). The results indicated that D. vulgaris could induce ferrihydrite transformation via S2--driven an

Magnetic analyses of hippocampal material from deceased normal and epileptic subjects, and from the surgically removed epileptogenic zone of a living patient have been carried out. All had magnetic characteristics similar to those reported for other parts of the brain [6]. These characteristics along with low temperature analysis indicate that the magnetic material is present in a wide range of grain sizes. The low temperature analysis also revealed the presence of magnetite through manifestation of its low temperature transition. The wide range of grain sizes is similar to magnetite produced

Abiotic reduction of iron (oxyhydr)oxides by aqueous Fe(II) is one of the key processes affecting the Fe cycle in soil. Lepidocrocite (Lep) occurs naturally in anaerobic, clayey, non-calcareous soils in cooler and temperate regions; however, little is known about the impacts of co-precipitated humic acid (HA) on Fe(II)-induced Lep transformation and its consequences for heavy metal immobilization. In this study, the Fe(II)-induced phase transformation of Lep-HA co-precipitates was analyzed as a function of the C/Fe ratio, and its implications for subsequent Cd(II) concentration dynamic in diss

Emissions of ethyl acetate (EA) exhaust from industrial sources can cause environmental and health risks. EA can be effectively removed by biological filtration with low operating costs and promising good benefits. This study demonstrated the synergistic effect of using magnetite and pebbles as bio-packing in promoting microbial activity and microbial abundance for EA degradation. The biofilter filled with magnetite and pebbles exhibits the most efficient removal of EA, average removal efficiency >90% (Inlet load: 120.19 ± 9.33 g/(m3·h), Empty bed residence time: 60s). Meanwhile, magnetite pro

Anaerobic fermentation of organic waste stream into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) through chain elongation (CE) has emerged as a sustainable and eco-friendly approach for resource recovery. Co-culture of yeast with chain elongator achieved a promising endogenous electron donor (ED)-driven CE but was limited by the weak yeast-bacteria synergy. This study presents a novel approach to optimizing the CE process through the regulation of magnetite (0-15 g/L). Results indicated that the 5 g/L of magnetite (Mag-5) achieved MCFA production at 8.42±0.67 g COD/L, which was 2.01 times greater than the

Severe tooth decay has been associated with iron deficiency anemia that disproportionally burdens susceptible populations. Current modalities are insufficient in severe cases where pathogenic dental biofilms rapidly accumulate, requiring new antibiofilm approaches. Here, we show that ferumoxytol, a Food and Drug Administration-approved nanoparticle formulation for treating iron deficiency, exerts an alternative therapeutic activity via the catalytic activation of hydrogen peroxide, which targets bacterial pathogens in biofilms and suppresses tooth enamel decay in an intraoral human disease mod
