Fetal growth and long-term consequences in animal models of growth retardation.

Perturbations of the maternal environment involve an abnormal intrauterine milieu for the developing fetus. The altered fuel supply (depends on substrate availability, placental transport of nutrients and uteroplacental blood flow) from mother to fetus induces alterations in the development of the fetal endocrine pancreas and adaptations of the fetal metabolism to the altered intrauterine environment, resulting in intrauterine growth retardation. The alterations induced by maternal diabetes or maternal malnutrition (protein-calorie or protein deprivation) have consequences for the offspring, p

Transamniotic fetal feeding. III. The effect of nutrient infusion on fetal growth retardation.

The small-for-gestational age (SGA) infant resulting from intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is at high risk for perinatal complications and chronic morbidity. Most IUGR is the result of inadequate transfer of nutrients and/or oxygen from mother to fetus. Transamniotic fetal feeding (TAFF) has been proposed as a method of treating IUGR in which nutrients infused into the amniotic fluid would be swallowed, absorbed, and used by the growth retarded fetus. To study the efficacy of TAFF in the treatment of IUGR, we have previously described a rabbit model for TAFF that takes advantage of the r

Organophosphate Ester Flame Retardants and Plasticizers in Relation to Fetal Growth in the LIFECODES Fetal Growth Study.

BACKGROUND: Organophosphate esters (OPEs), used ubiquitously as flame retardants and plasticizers in consumer products, are suspected of having developmental toxicity. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to estimate associations between prenatal exposure to OPEs and fetal growth, including both ultrasound (head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and estimated fetal weight) and delivery [birth weight z-score, small-for-gestational age (SGA), and large-for-gestational age (LGA)] measures of growth. METHODS: In the LIFECODES Fetal Growth Study (2008-2018), an enriched case-cohort of

The effect of maternal fatigue on the risk of fetal growth retardation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of fatigue trajectories on fetal growth during pregnancy. METHODS: Pregnant women and their fetuses were recruited at 11-13 weeks of gestation. Fatigue was assessed using the Chalder Fatigue Scale. Fetal growth was monitored through three ultrasound examinations. Growth Mixture Models characterized fatigue trajectories during pregnancy, while Generalized Estimating Equations analyzed the relationship between fatigue and fetal growth. Latent Growth Curve Models further explored how changes in fatigue and fetal growth affecte

An evaluation of fetal glucogenesis in intrauterine growth-retarded pregnancies.

The presence of fetal glucogenesis was evaluated in nine patients with pregnancies complicated by intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) at the time of fetal blood sampling (FBS) between 29 and 35 weeks of pregnancy. Eight were singleton pregnancies and one was a twin pregnancy in which blood samples were obtained from both twins. A maternal primed-constant infusion of D(U-13C]glucose was performed, and the presence of fetal glucogenesis was assessed by a comparison of steady-state maternal and fetal glucose enrichments. No significant difference was present between maternal and fetal molar pe

[The diagnostic potentials of dopplerometry in the fetal growth retardation syndrome].

Findings of conventional sonography and Doppler studies at 34-41 weeks of gestation have been compared in 210 women. Uteroplacental and fetal blood flows were evaluated in intrauterine growth retardation syndrome. Sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of these studies were assessed for fetal vessels, umbilical artery, uterine arteries and fetal measurements. Obstetric and neonatal outcomes were analyzed in relation to hemodynamic abnormalities in the maternal-placental-fetal system.

A scoring system for antenatal identification of fetal growth retardation.

A scoring system for selection of pregnancies at risk of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is presented. It is based on eight weighted items which include information from previous pregnancies and from the current one including the increment of fundal height and of maternal weight. With a risk population of 7% all IUGR infants were included. The IUGR infants constituted 34% of the risk group.

Epidural local anesthetics: a novel treatment for fetal growth retardation?

BACKGROUND: Chronically compromised uterine perfusion may lead to placental insufficiency and subsequent intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Various therapeutic approaches (e.g. vasodilators, low-dose aspirin, intravenous glucose infusion, and hemodilution) are often of limited efficacy. Local anesthetics have been shown to improve placental blood flow in pre-eclamptic women. We hypothesized that epidural administration of local anesthetics might improve outcome in IUGR independent of the underlying cause. In preparation for a clinical trial to test this hypothesis, we performed a pilot st

Fetal renal hyperechogenicity in intrauterine growth retardation: importance and outcome.

The object of the study was to investigate the outcome in growth-retarded newborns who were diagnosed with fetal renal hyperechogenicity without anatomical abnormality during any stage of pregnancy. Depending on the fetal renal ultrasonography result, the cases were divided into two study groups. There was an intrauterine growth-retarded group with fetal renal medullary hyperechogenicity and another group without fetal renal medullary hyperechogenicity. The renal parenchyma was observed after birth, within the first 5 days of life, and several times until the 14th postpartum day in positive ca

Essential thrombocythemia associated with recurrent abortions and fetal growth retardation.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is one of the myeloproliferative disorders characterized by an elevated platelet count, usually greater than 1,000 X 10(9)/L. It may be associated with either hemorrhagic or thrombotic tendencies. Although it usually affects older people, we have recently encountered two young women with ET who had a total of six spontaneous abortions before the end of the first trimester. During her most recent pregnancy, one of the patients underwent plateletpheresis on four separate occasions before the 12th week. She reached 34 weeks but demonstrated evidence of fetal growth

Sonographic amniotic fluid measurement and fetal growth retardation: a reappraisal.

Sonographic estimation of amniotic fluid volume is commonly used as a diagnostic test for oligohydramnios associated with fetal malnutrition. However, methods of measurement and diagnostic criteria are controversial. We prospectively evaluated the reproducibility of amniotic fluid diameter measurement and studied various threshold definitions of oligohydramnios as predictors of small for gestational age fetuses or fetuses with low ponderal index values. An average of the vertical and two perpendicular horizontal diameters of the largest pocket of amniotic fluid was more reproducible than the m

Fetal heart rate patterns in patients with intrauterine growth retardation.

Fetal heart rate recordings were examined in 953 patients with special reference to the different patterns occurring during labor. After delivery the infants were examined with special emphasis on evidence of growth retardation, defined as birthweight below the 10th percentile for the gestational age. Heart rate patterns of growth-retarded infants were compared with those of normal newborns. A statistically significant increase in early, late, and variable decelerations was noted in infants with growth retardation. The difference in loss of beat-to-beat variation was not statistically signific

Fetal blood flow redistribution in term intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and post-natal growth.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between intrauterine growth retardation, represented by fetal blood flow redistribution and infantile growth. METHODS: The blood flow velocity waveform of umbilical and middle cerebral arteries was recorded by Doppler ultrasonography in 77 growth-retarded fetuses. We recorded the pulsatility index (PI) of the umbilical artery and middle cerebral and calculated the PI ratio of the middle cerebral to umbilical artery (C/U ratio). We selected a cutoff value of 1.0 to distinguish between normal and abnormal C/U ratios. T

Benign placental mass with fetal growth retardation in a bull mastiff.

A 4-year-old bull mastiff presented due to premature labour. The referring veterinarian elected to perform a caesarian delivery and at the time of surgery a 4×4×2 cm round, smooth, red to tan, lobulated soft mass was identified attached to the allantoic surface of the zonary placenta of one pup. Microscopically, this mass was composed of loosely arranged confluent undulating cords of polygonal to columnar epithelioid cells separated by a fine fibrovascular stroma resembling the placental labyrinth. The labyrinthine structure and epithelioid nature of the cells suggested that the mass was of tr

[Etiology of intrauterine growth retardation. Part I: placental-fetal interrelationship disorder].

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) increases a risk of perinatal complications and may carry a negative influence on a later baby's mental and physical development. Poorer function revealed by many vital organs seems to be the effect of their lower mass and their relative immaturity. In the first part of a paper the authors discuss two groups of factors thought to be responsible for IUGR. The first one has been related to the fetal status-genetic anomalies, other primary developmental defects and different growth patterns.

Iron deficiency and its role in cadmium-induced fetal growth retardation.

The aim of this investigation was to establish the relationship of cadmium-induced fetal growth retardation in the mouse to iron deficiency. Pregnant mice were either fed a low iron diet or given 40 ppm cadmium in their drinking water. The effects of these factors on fetal weight and hematological values of the fetuses and dams were established and compared, both with each other and with appropriate controls. Both treatments caused maternal and fetal anemia, the fetuses being more severely affected. The anemic fetuses were also severely growth retarded. These changes, when caused by the iron d

Fetal growth retardation and lack of hypotaurine in ezrin knockout mice.

Ezrin is a membrane-associated cytoplasmic protein that serves to link cell-membrane proteins with the actin-based cytoskeleton, and also plays a role in regulation of the functional activities of some transmembrane proteins. It is expressed in placental trophoblasts. We hypothesized that placental ezrin is involved in the supply of nutrients from mother to fetus, thereby influencing fetal growth. The aim of this study was firstly to clarify the effect of ezrin on fetal growth and secondly to determine whether knockout of ezrin is associated with decreased concentrations of serum and placental

Does age potentiate the smoking-related risk of fetal growth retardation?

Whether smoking is more harmful in certain pregnancies than others is a matter of controversy. In a large prospective study, interactions between smoking and other risk factors for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) were studied. Practically all Swedish live births between 1983 and 1985 were included, 280,809 births in all. In single births, significant interaction between maternal age on one hand and moderate (1-9 cigarettes/day) or heavy (ten cigarettes or more per day) smoking on the other, were obtained. The relative risk of SGA for heavy smokers versus non-smokers was 1.9 in the lowest age g
