Fetal breathing movements and maternal hyperoxia.

The effect of maternal inhalation of 50 per cent oxygen upon fetal breathing movements was investigated. No significant effect was noted in patients with normal pregnancies or in those complicated by insulin dependent diabetes or mild pre-eclampsia. A significant increase in fetal breathing movements was observed in those pregnancies complicated by either severe pre-eclampsia or fetal growth retardation.

Cigarette smoking and fetal breathing movements.

Cigarette smoking caused a reduction in the incidence of fetal breathing movements in normal and abnormal pregnancies. The size of the reduction varied, being greatest in small-for-dates pregnancies and pregnancies complicated by fetal distress in labour and least in pre-eclamptic pregnancies. The fall in the amount of fetal breathing movements was significantly related to the rise in maternal plasma nicotine after smoking but was unrelated to the rise in barboxyhaemoglobin. Smoking non-nicotine (herbal) cigarettes produced increases in carboxyhaemoglobin concentrations similar to those observ

Maternal smoking and fetal breathing movements.

Pregnant, habitually smoking women were studied during the last trimester when smoking a standard cigarette, smoking a nontobacco cigarette, or chewing a piece of chewing gum containing 2 or 4 mg. of nicotine. The effects of the experimental interventions were followed on the concentration of nicotine and the percentage of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in maternal blood, on the amount and pattern of the fetal breathing movements, and on the maternal heart rate, breathing rate, and blood glucose level. The maternal blood concentration of nicotine was increased by the standard cigarette, the 4 mg. ni

The central effects of morphine on fetal breathing movements in the fetal sheep.

The fetal respiratory and electrocortical effects of 0.6 microgram to 600 micrograms of morphine, administered into the lateral cerebral ventricle, have been studied in chronically catheterised, unanaesthetized fetal sheep at 115-135 days gestation. Morphine at 0.6 microgram had no effect on breathing movements or electrocorticographic activity, and at 6 micrograms induced a period of apnoea (43-122 min) but had no effect on electrocortical activity. Intravenous naloxone (2 mg bolus and infusion of 2 mg/kg/h for 2 h) to the fetus had no effect on this apnoea. Morphine at 60 micrograms induced

Are increased fetal movements always reassuring?

Many studies have reported on the association of reduced fetal movements and stillbirth, but little is known about excessive fetal movements and adverse pregnancy outcome. First described in 1977, sudden excessive fetal movement was noted to reflect acute fetal distress and subsequent fetal demise. Subsequently, little was reported regarding this phenomenon until 2012. However, emerging data suggest that 10-30% of the women that subsequently suffer a stillbirth describe a single episode of excessive fetal movement prior to fetal demise. These episodes are poorly understood but may reflect feta

Normal range of fetal knee movements.

Fetal limb movement abnormalities have been described to date in the literature only in subjective terms. The aim of the present study was to define objectively the normal range of fetal knee motion. The study population consisted of 240 normal fetuses at gestational age 16-39 weeks. The range of active knee motion was determined on routine prenatal ultrasound scans by measuring the angles between the midtibia, midfemur, and midknee on maximum flexion and extension. From 16 to 32 weeks, average knee flexion was 129.4 degrees (range, 120-140 degrees) and average extension was 23.7 degrees (rang

Effects of hyperthermia on fetal breathing movements.

High environmental temperature is known to impair fetal growth and development. We now report long lasting changes in fetal breathing activity following the exposure of pregnant ewes to an ambient temperature of 43 degrees C for 8 h. In 16 trials in 10 ewes (119-138 days gestation) heat exposure increased maternal and fetal core temperatures 1.5-2.0 degrees C, and the hyperventilation by the ewe produced a fall in fetal PaCO2 from 53.5 +/- 1.3 to 34.8 +/- 5.3 mmHg (P less than 0.05). Fetal breathing movements decreased in incidence during the hyperthermia but remained episodic (present during

Maternal hypoxemia and fetal breathing movements.

Fetal breathing movements (FBM) were observed daily using a real-time B-mode ultrasound method in a patient with sickle cell anemia in crisis. Observations were made on 2 occasions in the presence of maternal hypoxemia (PO2 less than or equal to 40 mmHg), and FBM were noted to be absent. Conversely, when maternal PO2 was 60 mmHg or greater, FBM were present 23--80% of the time. The FBM were reduced or absent within 90 minutes of maternal Demerol injection. These observations suggest that the human fetal response to hypoxemia may be similar to that observed under expermental conditions in the a

Intrauterine breathing movements and fetal presentation.

Fetal breathing movements in 14 twin pregnancies were examined with ultrasonic technique. The twin fetuses I in cephalic presentation showed a significantly higher percentage of apnea and periodic breathing compared with twin fetuses II. No such difference was found in twin pairs with Twin ti in breech presentation. Also in the control group of 27 singleton pregnancies, the fetuses in cephalic presentation had a higher incidence of apnea and periodic breathing than those in breech presentation. The position of the fetus seems to be decisive for the character of the breathing movements before b

Simultaneous recording of fetal breathing movements and body movements in twin pregnancy.

Fetal breathing and body movements were simultaneously evaluated in twin pregnancies in order to determine to what extent these activities occur in a synchroneous pattern in both twin fetuses and if fetal position, presentation or sex have an influence on their behavior. Thirty healthy pairs of twins at 34-37 weeks of gestation were studied. Twenty-six percent of fetal body movements and 49% of breathing movements occurred simultaneously in both fetuses. The overall total simultaneous fetal activity rate was 53.3%. The length of breathing movements and total activity (summation of breathing an

Correlation between perinatal abnormalities and decreased fetal movement as counted by a fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder: A prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to study the relationship between a decrease in gross fetal movement during maternal night sleep counted by an objective method and abnormal perinatal outcomes. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. A total of 470 pregnant women recorded fetal movement with the fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder weekly after 28 weeks. The ratio of 10-s epochs with fetal movement to all epochs was calculated as the fetal movement parameter. When the parameter was below the 10th percentile of the previously made reference curve, it was defined as decreased move

Reduced fetal movements and cerebroplacental ratio: evidence for worsening fetal hypoxemia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fetal cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) in women presenting with reduced fetal movements (RFM). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of data collected over an 8-year period at a fetal medicine unit at a tertiary referral center. The cohort comprised 4500 singleton pregnancies presenting with RFM at or after 36 weeks' gestation and 1527 control pregnancies at a similar gestational age without RFM. Fetal biometry and Doppler parameters were recorded and converted into centiles and multiples of the median (MoM). CPR was defined as the ratio between the fetal mi

Cardiotocography as a predictor of fetal outcome in women presenting with reduced fetal movement.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the obstetric and perinatal outcomes of women presenting with reduced fetal movement (RFM) during the third trimester, specifically in relation to the diagnostic capacity of non-stress cardiotocography (CTG) used as the primary investigation in this clinical scenario. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective population-based cohort study of pregnancy outcomes of all women ≥ 28 weeks' gestation with singleton pregnancies presenting during one calendar year with maternal perception of RFM, all of whom underwent CTG at presentation. Main outcome measures included: obstetric i

Effect of morphine on fetal electrocortical activity and breathing movements in fetal sheep.

Morphine (1 mg/kg) given to the lamb fetus near term induces a significant increase in low-voltage high-frequency (LVHF) electrical activity in the brain. This pattern of the electrocorticogram (ECOG) is associated with simultaneous continuous fetal breathing movements of greater amplitude than control. Naloxone prevents and reverses these morphine-induced changes. The observed phenomena suggest that opiate receptors may play a stimulant role in the control of fetal LVHF ECOG and fetal breathing movements.

Late-onset fetal cardiac decelerations associated with fetal breathing movements.

BACKGROUND: While late decelerations are regarded as signs of fetal hypoxemia, fetal breathing movements (FBM) associated with late decelerations invariably have normal outcomes. Could late decelerations sometimes represent FBM? MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients between 37 and 42 weeks' gestation with 'late decelerations' associated with FBM (by ultrasound or tocodynamometer) during ante- or intrapartum monitoring were evaluated. Three were at high risk (diabetes, postdates, intrauterine growth restriction) and three were at low-risk. RESULTS: 'Late decelerations' arose in previously reass

[Evaluation of the fetal movements and accelerations of fetal heart rate in twin pregnancy].

In twin pregnancy, the fetal heart rates (FHR) of each fetus and uterine contraction were recorded simultaneously on a single recording chart by two cardiotocographs and a linear multichannel recorder. In addition, with a new technique, FHR and fetal movement (FM) signal bursts for each fetus were recorded similarly on a single recording chart by two ultrasonic Doppler actographs and an electronic polyrecorder. Simultaneous nonstress tests were done for 32 sets of twins at 28 to 41 weeks' gestation. The observed acceleration number in every gestational week increased till 38 weeks and this res

Fetal movement counting is associated with the reduction of delayed maternal reaction after perceiving decreased fetal movements: a prospective study.

Maternal perception of decreased fetal movement is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Although there have been several studies on interventions related to the fetal movements count, most focused on adverse perinatal outcomes, and little is known about the impact of the fetal movement count on maternal behavior after the perception of decreased fetal movement. We investigated the impact of the daily fetal movement count on maternal behavior after the perception of decreased fetal movement and on the stillbirth rate in this prospective population-based study. Pregnant women in Shiga pre

Antepartum fetal heart rate monitoring. III. Fetal movements and accelerations in fetal heart rate.

This third part of the paper deals with the study of the relationships between fetal movements, fetal heart rate accelerations associated with such movements, fetal heart rate instability and neonatal outcome. No correlations has been found between absence of fetal movements and neonatal distress. A correlation has been found between the lack of fetal heart rate accelerations, the flatness of the record and poor neonatal outcome. In extreme situations (i.e. flatness in less than 10% of the record or in more than 80%) the presence or absence of accelerations does not add further useful informat
