Two cases of congenital teratoma were operated upon. In view of the high degree of organoid differentiation of the teratomas with rudimentary limbs, intestine, brain-like and pulmonary tissues, it was difficult to distinguish it from fetus-in-fetu. In the light of the data obtained and extensive review of related literature, we consider that fetus-in-fetu and teratoma may not be unrelated entities. Our cases support the view held that fetuses in fetu are highly differentiated teratomas.

Fetus in fetu is a rare pathological condition, presenting as a congenital tumor. It consists of a malformed parasitic twin that is found within the body of its sibling. Less than 70 cases have been reported and in most of them a definite diagnosis was only made during surgery. We present a case with two fetuses in the retroperitoneum and describe the criteria to be kept in mind for a correct preoperative diagnosis using the current imaging modalities.

A 5 month-old female was brought to our clinic because of diarrhea and abdominal distension. A plain radiograph demonstrated a mass with a vertebral column in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. At operation a mass was found to be retroperitoneal, well encapsulated, and connected to the abdominal aorta of the host by two small vessels; no other connections and adhesions were seen between the mass and the host. The ovaries, uterus, and other pelvic and abdominal viscera of the host were normal. The mass was diagnosed as a fetus-in-fetu. The fetus-in-fetu, encapsulated with an amniotic caps

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is an extremely rare condition in which malformed fetus is found most commonly in the retroperitoneum of living twin. It occurs in about 1 in 500 000 live births and less than 200 cases have been reported in medical literature. We report FIF in a 17-year-old woman unlike other cases which were usually detected in early age and in male gender. This is the eighth case of adult FIF and the first case of FIF in adult woman worldwide. Preoperative diagnosis of FIF on CT was made and planned for exploratory laparotomy. The excised malformed fetus in a sac was proven as FIF on the

Fetus in Fetu (FIF) is a rare condition where a monozygotic diamnionic parasitic twin is incorporated into the body of its fellow twin and grows inside it. FIF is differentiated from teratoma by the presence of vertebral column. An eight year old girl presented with an abdominal swelling which by X-ray, ultrasonography and CT scan revealed a fetiform mass containing long bones and vertebral bodies surrounded by soft tissue situated on right lumber region. On laparotomy, a retroperitoneal mass resembling a fetus of 585 gm was removed. It had a trunk and four limbs with fingers and toes, umbilic

A case of fetus-in- fetu is reported. It occurred in an 8-week-old Korean boy who had been born by cesarean section due to abdominal distension. The fetus-in- fetu was connected to the superior mesenteric artery and consisted of two masses, apparently representing two portions of an acardiac monster. There was an amniotic membrane covering both masses, and the umbilical cord clearly was identifiable. One mass included the brain, eye, trachea, salivary glands, thyroid, pancreas, spleen, etc., while the other mass contained extremity bones, vertebrae, testis, adrenals, and intestinal loops. This

Fetus in fetu is a rare condition which most often presents as a fetiform calcified mass in the abdomen of its host, fetus or newborn. We report a case of 8-month-old girl with history of abdominal distension. Ultrasonography and computed tomography scan revealed a mass in which the contents favor a fetus in fetu rather than a teratoma. She underwent surgery and the mass was resected in toto. Radiograph of the resected specimen showed the presence of rudimentary vertebral column which was later confirmed by pathologist.

Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare and interesting entity characterized byincorporation of a malformed, monozygotic, diamnionic parasitic twin into the body of other normal twin partner. FIF is differentiated from teratoma by its embryological origin, its unusual location in the retroperitoneal space and the presence of vertebral column (axis) often with appropriate arrangement of other organs or limbs around this axis. We report two cases of FIF. Our first case presented at 18 months, while second at 9 year of age. FIF derived their blood supply directly from aorta in both the cases. Our FIF had di

A 3.5-month-old boy was hospitalized because of an abdominal mass found accidentally. On physical examination, a smooth, firm, nontender mass was present in the right upper quadrant. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a large, hyperechoic, heterogenous mass with clear boundaries, and scarce blood flow. Abdominal CT scan showed a bulky right retroperitoneal mass. Three-dimensional CT imaging demonstrated spine, iliac bone, and long bones of limbs. The mass was excised successfully. After opening the sac it was noted to contain an incompletely developed fetus with grossly visible limbs, clearly

Two cases of fetus-in-fetu, on which we performed surgery in 2003 and 2006, are being reported. Both the cases presented with a lump in the abdomen. Radiology confirmed the diagnosis. The lumps were found in the retroperitoneum and successfully excised. Because of the rarity of the condition, these two cases are being reported with relevant salient features and are discussed in the light of available literature.

A 7-day-old male child presented with abdominal distention and jaundice. Radiological investigations revealed an encapsulated sac encasing three fetus-in-fetu (FIF) in the retroperitoneum. Laparotomy revealed a sac occupying almost the whole of the abdomen. The sac was stretching the duodenum and barely visible common bile duct, which were carefully separated. The rest of the bowel was displaced to the left. The sac containing three FIFs was excised intact. One of the fetuses was highly differentiated and had thoracic meningomyelocele, which has never been reported in FIF.

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare condition in which a malformed fetus resides in the body of its host. The presence of a well-formed vertebral column secures the diagnosis of FIF and differentiates this entity from a teratoma. Although more than 100 cases of FIF have been reported in the literature, the presence of a well-formed vertebral column is not documented in many cases. We herein report the case of a 19-day-old female who presented with a lump in the abdomen. Plain radiograph of the abdomen showed the presence of a well-formed vertebral column with long bones, and the results were confirm

Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital condition in which a fetiform mass is detected in the host abdomen and also in other sites such as the intracranium, thorax, head, and neck. This condition has been rarely reported in the literature. Herein, we report the case of a fetus presenting with abdominal cystic mass and ascites and prenatally diagnosed as meconium pseudocyst. Explorative laparotomy revealed an irregular fetiform mass in the retroperitoneum within a fluid-filled cyst. The mass contained intestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and finger. Fetal abdominal cystic mass has been identifie

Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare pathological condition, which presents as a congenital tumor, usually in the abdomen or retroperitoneum. A few cases have been reported in the cranial cavity, cervical spine, ovarium, scrotum and liver. We presently report a case of intrapulmonary FIF in a 12-year-old girl who was on treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis and had no symptoms related to the tumor. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of FIF with pulmonary presentation.

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare condition in which a fetiform calcified mass is contained within the newborn or infant, often in the retroperitoneal cavity. We report a case of a fetus in fetu in the posterior mediastinum of a newborn. The prospective diagnosis was made by fetal US and MRI and confirmed by postnatal plain radiograph, CT and MRI.

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is an extremely rare condition (1/500,000 live births) in which a fetiform structure is incorporated into the body of its twin. FIF can be a diagnostic dilemma due to its similarity to a teratoma, but identification of FIF is important for subsequent medical and surgical management. We compare two cases of fetal masses diagnosed on prenatal imaging that were later identified as FIF through further radiological, surgical, and pathologic evaluation. We use these cases to illustrate key pre- and postnatal features of FIF and highlight the benefits of prenatal detection and fol

Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare entity in which malformed parasitic twin grows inside the body of its twin. It is most commonly presented with mass in the abdomen. We present a case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with abdominal mass since infancy. Radiological investigations are suggestive of FIF. Intraoperatively, malformed fetus in a sac was found and excised. Postoperatively the patient recovers well and was put on follow-up.

A five-year-old girl had been noted, since birth to have abdominal distension. There was no history of twinning or teratoma in the family. Physical examination discovered a 15 x 10 cm mass in the abdomen. Roentgenologic examination demonstrated the presence of an axial skeleton and long bones within the mass. MRI showed a retroperitoneal mass with components of cystic, bony and fatty tissues. When the mass was surgically removed from the retroperitoneal cavity, pathologic examination disclosed a parasitic fetus measuring 15.3 x 6.3 x 6.0 cm in size and suspended by a peduncle within a capsule.

Fetus in fetu is an extremely uncommon cause of an abdominal mass in the neonate; fewer than 30 generally accepted cases are recorded in the literature. We report a case of intraabdominal fetus in fetu, with a unique location within an undescended left testicle. Chromosomal studies of cells from the fetus in fetu and the surviving infant revealed identical 46,XY karyotypes.
