Rumen microbiome represents rich source of enzymes degrading complex plant polysaccharides. We describe here analysis of Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) from 3.5 gigabase sequences of metagenomic data from rumen samples of Mehsani buffaloes fed on different proportions of green or dry roughages to concentrate ration. A total of 2597 contigs encoding putative CAZymes were identified by CAZyme Analysis Toolkit (CAT). The phylogenetic analysis of these contigs by MG-RAST revealed predominance of Bacteroidetes, followed by Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria phyla. Moreover, a hig

Over the past decade, there has been an increasing amount of literature on heat stress (HS) effects on ruminant production systems, yet much uncertainty still exists about the relationship between HS and rumen microbial ecology across species. This narrative review synthesizes peer-reviewed evidence from 2020 to 2025, with the aim of providing a critical appraisal of HS effects on rumen microbiome composition and fermentation parameters in cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats. A convergent pattern emerges from the available data: HS consistently reduces cellulolytic bacteria (Fibrobacter, Ruminoc

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that gut microbiota regulates reproductive performance in mammals. Our prior research identified the gut microbiota-ovary axis as an important contributor to the superior follicular development observed in Chinese indigenous Meishan sows, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the mechanism through which gut microbiota regulates follicular development.
RESULTS: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from Meishan sows promoted follicular maturation in recipient Landrace × Yorkshire sows, evidenced by increased n

The establishment of gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a crucial action in neonatal development, host health and productivity. We hypothesized that the ileal microbiome shifted as goats matured, and this colonization process would be associated with host fermentation capacity. To this end, 18 Liuyang black grazing goats were randomly slaughtered at d 0, 7, 28, 42, and 70. Ileal microbiota was profiled by Miseq sequencing of 16S rRNA gene of bacteria, and fermentation capacity [volatile fatty acid, activities of amylase, carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase) and xylanase] was determined us

The effect of the level of neutral detergent fibre (NDF: 0.35, LI and 0.42, HI) and neutral detergent soluble fibre (NDSF: 0.14, LS and 0.17, HS) in the caecal ecosystem was studied in 24 weaned (28 days of age) rabbits, weighing 630 ± 80.2 g in a 2 × 2 factorial design. After 22 days, rabbits were slaughtered and their caecal contents sampled. The caecal pH (on average 6.2) and molar volatile fatty acids (VFA) proportions were not affected by dietary treatments, but total VFA concentration tended to be lower with NDF (84.7 vs. 74.1 mmol/l; P = 0.095). The amount of total bacteria tended (P =

This study investigated the effects of supplementing bee pollen (BP) in high-concentrate diets (HCD) on the health status and production performance of goats. Twenty Jintang Black goats, similar age and weighing 33.36 ± 1.34 kg, were randomly assigned to the CON group (basal diet) and the BP group (basal diet + 0.5% BP) for a 30-day feeding trial. Results indicated that BP supplementation significantly increased average daily gain by 36.55% (p < 0.05), and decreased Feed-to-Gain ratio (p < 0.05) of goats. Apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber was also

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota ferment non-digestible substances to produce metabolites that accumulate in muscle and influence host metabolism. However, the regulatory mechanisms connecting gut microbiota, metabolites, and fat deposition across pig breeds remain unclear. This study explores the gut-muscle axis regulating fat deposition and meat quality in Chinese Songliao Black Pig (SBP) and Large White × Landrace Pigs (LWLDP). Digesta samples from the ileum, cecum, and rectum of both breeds were analyzed using 16 S rRNA sequencing for microbiome profiling and ultra-high-performance liquid chroma

This study evaluated the impacts of α-amylase (AM) and coated α-amylase (CAM) on bull performance, nutrient digestibility, and ruminal fermentation. This study randomized 60 Holstein bulls of 365 ± 11.5 days of age and 457.5 ± 9.35 kg body weight into three groups: without AM addition, adding AM 0.6 g/kg dry matter (DM), and adding CAM 0.6 g AM/kg DM, separately. This whole experimental period was 80 days, including a 20-day adaptation period and a 60-day data and sample acquisition period. In comparison with the unsupplemented control, dry matter intake (DMI) was unaltered; however, average d

To determine the pivotal microorganisms affecting intramuscular fat (IMF) accumulation in Min pigs and to discern the extent of the influence exerted by various intestinal segments on IMF-related traits, we sequenced 16S rRNA from the contents of six intestinal segments from a high IMF group (Group H) and a low IMF group (Group L) of Min pigs weighing 90 ± 1 kg. We then compared their diversity and disparities in bacterial genera. Group H exhibited considerably higher α diversity in the jejunum and colon than Group L (p < 0.05). When 95% confidence levels were considered, the main β diversity

Gastrointestinal microbiota may play an important role in regulating host mucosal innate immune function. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that age (non-rumination, transition and rumination) and feeding type [Supplemental feeding (S) vs. Grazing (G)] could alter ruminal microbial diversity and maturation of host mucosal innate immune system in goat kids. MiSeq sequencing was applied to investigate ruminal microbial composition and diversity, and RT-PCR was used to test expression of immune-related genes in ruminal mucosa. Results showed that higher (P < 0.05) relative abundance

Helminth infection in pigs serves as an excellent model for the study of the interaction between human malnutrition and parasitic infection and could have important implications in human health. We had observed that pigs infected with Trichuris suis for 21 days showed significant changes in the proximal colon microbiota. In this study, interactions between worm burden and severity of disruptions to the microbial composition and metabolic potentials in the porcine proximal colon microbiota were investigated using metagenomic tools. Pigs were infected by a single dose of T. suis eggs for 53 days

Current knowledge of the ovine vaginal microbiota is limited to adult ewes, leaving the bacterial community of nulliparous ewes and its dynamics during their first reproductive handling undefined. This study aimed to characterize the vaginal microbiota of ewe lambs prior to their first breeding and to evaluate the changes caused by routine handling and estrus synchronization. A total of 66 vaginal samples were collected from 22 nulliparous Latxa ewe lambs at three time points: baseline, post-handling, and post-estrus synchronization using intravaginal devices containing oxytetracycline. Grazing yaks often face protein deficiency due to low-quality pasture, which limits milk production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of varying protein levels in concentrate supplementation on lactational performance, immune function, and rumen microbial and metabolites in grazing lactating yaks. Thirty-six lactating Qinghai Plateau yaks (172.78 ± 11.70 kg) were assigned to four treatments for 70 d (10 d adaptation + 60 d trial): grazing only (CON) or grazing plus 1.50 kg/d concentrate containing 15.09% (CP15), 17.00% (CP17), or 18.98% CP (CP19). BACKGROUND: Artificial insemination (AI) is an effective reproductive technique to improve the performance of cashmere goats and prevent the spread of diseases, and the quality of the semen determines the success of AI. The potential of Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MOLP) and Moringa oleifera leaf ethanolic extract (MOLE) to improve semen quality has been reported, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. For the purpose, 18 mature male cashmere goats were randomly assigned into three groups: the control (CON), MOLP, and MOLE groups. The CON group received distilled water orally; the MOLP

Long-term supplementation of a high-concentrate diet enhances the accumulation of lactate and decrease in pH in goat rumen, thereby disrupting the composition of microbial community. Studies have shown that incorporation of thiamine in high-concentrate diet increases ruminal pH and decreases rumen lactate concentration. To explore the effects of thiamine supplementation with a high-concentrate diet on alteration of the whole ruminal microbiota and their metabolites, 18 mid-lactating Saanen goats were randomly fed with one of three diets: (1) control diet (CON; n = 6; concentrate:forage 30:70),
