Rare pediatric presentation of aneurysmal bone cyst with trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma and ossifying fibroma.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign intraosseous lesion characterized by blood filled spaces of varying sizes associated with a fibroblastic stroma containing multinucleated giant cells, osteoid and woven bone. ABC can present either singly or in association with osseous neoplasms such as ossifying fibroma (OF), giant cell granuloma etc. Juvenile ossifying fibroma has two variants: psammomatoid JOF (PJOF) and trabecular JOF (TJOF). ABC formation in TJOF is very rare in pediatric patients with only three cases reported in literature till date to the best of our knowledge. We hereby report th

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the maxilla.

Despite the fact that cemento-ossifying fibromas of the maxilla may be quite large and locally aggressive, en-bloc excision is achieved by gentle blunt dissection, with the whole tumour mass peeled out from the adjacent structures. Until recently different fibro-osseous tumours that contained cementum were classified together as "cementomas". In 1992 The World Health Organization adopted a new classification that included these fibromas as benign osseous tumours. While such tumours of the mandible are common, those of the maxilla are rare. They are growth products of periodontal membrane remna

Juvenile ossifying fibroma of the jaw.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma is a benign lesion with aggressive local growth. It is similar to an ossifying fibroma, although it is more aggressive and of earlier onset. Some cases of ossifying fibroma are part of a syndrome that includes hyperparathyroidism (caused by adenoma or carcinoma) and renal lesions, possibly caused by a recently discovered genetic mutation. These tumours must be treated by radical excision, to prevent recurrence. We report a case of recurrent juvenile ossifying fibroma, in an 18-year-old girl. The treatment was radical en-bloc resection, which was reconstructed at the

[Ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation of ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone, and to discuss its diagnosis and treatment. METHOD: A rare case of ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone was presented. The patient was a 8-year-old boy with a one year history of left ear discomfort, suppurative otorrhea and progressive hearing loss. Physical examination of the ear revealed a stenosis of left external auditory canal (EAC), and an obvious expansion at mastoid region. Audiometry showed no hearing of the left ear. A postauricular approach was used to expose the mass. Frozen section eval

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma of the ethmoid.

We present a 16 year-old girl who suffered since one year of a painless slow growing mass on the left medial orbital rim causing globe displacement. CT-scan and MRI of the orbit with T1 and T2 weighted images showed the presence of a large mucocoele in the frontal sinus. This occurred secondary to the obstruction of the sinonasal tract by a bony tumour. Histopathology showed a lesion consisting of fibrous tissue and ossicles or psammomatoid bodies. The diagnosis of a psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) was made.

[A case of ossifying fibroma of the skull].

A 23-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of a soft, painful mass in the right parietal region for a month. Neurological examination revealed no abnormality. Laboratory data including serum Ca, P and alkaline phosphatase were normal. Skull x-ray film showed a partially osteolytic, not well circumscribed lesion in the right frontal, parietal and occipital bone. No remarkable sclerotic area was seen in the lesion. CT scan showed that the lesion was located in the diploë, destroying both inner and outer tables of the bone. Right external carotid angiogram revealed that the lesion i

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the orbit.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma presents with ophthalmic symptoms and signs rarely. We report the clinical and pathological findings in a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma of the right maxilla with extension into the orbital floor causing intermittent vertical diplopia, proptosis, and upward displacement of the globe. Compression of the nasolacrimal duct produced epiphora early in the course of the disease. Fibrous dysplasia has often been diagnosed in other cases of benign monostotic fibro-osseous conditions. Ossifying fibroma is easily confused with fibrous dysplasia. The histopathological differe

Management of Peripheral Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma.

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma (PCOF) is a rare, reactive osteogenic neoplasm that presents as an epulis-like growth with unknown pathogenesis. This lesion commonly affects the younger generation. Frequently associated with the maxilla, it is more common in the anterior region. Here, we present a rare case of a 54-year-old male patient with a painless gingival swelling in the mandible for a period of one year. Prompt diagnosis through complete radiographic and histopathologic examination is critical for proper diagnosis of this lesion. Proper surgical removal with complete curettage is e

Psammomatoid variant of juvenile ossifying fibroma.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare benign tumor of the craniofacial bones differing from other fibro-osseous lesions in terms of early age of onset, aggressive clinical behavior, and high recurrence rate. Histopathologically, it is divided into two as trabecular JOF (TrJOF) and psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF). In PsJOF, psammoma-like spherical ossicles constitute pathognomonic histopathological images, whereas TrJOF has trabeculae of fibrillary osteoid and woven bone. Despite the histopathologic separation, both lesions have similar clinical behavior, thus the treatment procedure is also the

Recurrent peripheral ossifying fibroma: Case report.

Most of the reactive lesions in the oral cavity arise from gingiva. Fibroma, focal fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma, and peripheral ossifying fibroma are the commonly encountered lesions of gingiva. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) frequently arises from the peripheral tissues like gingiva. It is commonly found in females, mostly in the anterior of the molar region. POF is predicted to arise from the cells of periodontal ligament due to close proximity of gingiva to periodontal ligament. Its exact origin is unclear. The present article describes the case of recurrent peripheral ossify

[Non-ossifying fibroma (metaphyseal fibrous defect)].

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) or metaphyseal fibrous defect (MFD) is benign fibroblast proliferation with the presence of osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells. The most cases of NOF/MFD occur in the metaphysis of the long tubular bones of the lower extremities, more commonly in the metaphysis of the femur and in the proximal metaphysis of the tibia. This lesion has a characteristic X-ray pattern and requires no surgical intervention, except for cases of a pathologic fracture or a risk for the latter. The paper analyzes 35 NOF/MFD cases in children and adolescents. It has been found that on

Juvenile ossifying fibroma: a case study.

We present the case of an 8-year-old patient with a juvenile ossifying fibroma in the right mandibular angle and a radicular cyst in the left mandibular angle, which produced a major swelling at the level of the mandibular angles and prevented the correct eruption of the lower first molars. After the clinical and radiological (panoramic X-ray and dental scan of the mandible), the corresponding surgical treatment (cystectomy and remodelling) and histopathological study were carried out. Although juvenile ossifying fibroma is an uncommon clinical entity, its aggressive local behaviour and high r

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the jaw.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign growth, considered to originate from the periodontal ligament. It is often encapsulated and predominantly located in the mandible, and presents as a slow-growing lesion, but may cause deformity if left untreated. The definitive diagnosis of these lesions requires integration of its clinical, radiological and histological features. We present a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma in relation to the lower left one-third of the face, and its management.

Periosteal ossifying fibroma of the palate.

An unusual case of the ossifying fibroma of a 54-year-old woman is reported. Clinically the lesion appeared as an exophytic mass on the hard palate and apparently originated outside of bone. Histologically the resected tumor is well encapsulated and made up of a richly cellular fibroblastic stroma containing foci of mature bone with a predominantly lamellar structure. While the possibility exists that the lesion is reactive, it appears to be a true neoplastic growth and a purely soft tissue process arising from the periosteum of the palate. Thus, we proposed the term periosteal ossifying fibro

Long bone ossifying fibromas.

Ossifying fibromas involving the tibia were seen in two patients. In both patients, the radiographic appearance of the lesions suggested fibrous dysplasia, but histopathologic evaluation demonstrated findings similar to ossifying fibroma of the mandible and facial bones. Radiologic and pathologic recognition of this entity is necessary for proper treatment.
