The distribution of fibronectin in the palmar aponeurosis of patients with Dupuytren's contracture was compared with that of normal controls, using an immunofluorescent technique. The tissues were also investigated with type-specific anticollagen antisera (anti-type I and anti-type III collagen). Tissues from Dupuytren's contracture patients showed intense fibronectin fluorescence in the whole range studied. Fibronectin glomerulopathy is a rare autosomal dominant inherited glomerular disease associated with massive deposition of fibronectin. We recently diagnosed fibronectin glomerulopathy in a 29-year-old woman presenting nephrotic syndrome. Genetic analysis of fibronectin 1 gene showed heterozygosity for the Y973C mutation. However, this mutation was not found in her parents. She had stable renal function but persistent nephrotic proteinuria after one-year follow-up.

Elevated levels of a thrombin-cleaved fragment of osteopontin (OPNT) are seen in synovial fluid (SF) and tissues of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Homocystinuria is a genetic disorder resulting in elevated levels of homocysteine in plasma and tissues. Some of the skeletal and ocular symptoms such as long bone overgrowth, scoliosis, and ectopia lentis overlap with symptoms seen in Marfan syndrome. Studied were 25 healthy gravidae in the first or second trimester of pregnancy and 28 women with threatened abortion (TA). Plasma fibronectin (pFN) was assayed in maternal blood serum and the fetal fibronectin (fFN) was quantified in cervico-vaginal secretion. Patients with imminent abortion had significantly elevated levels of both pFN and fFN as compared with women with uncomplicated pregnancy. Within the TA group of patients, vaginal bleeding and/or trophoblast was associated with significant increase in fibronectin levels.

The level of plasma fibronectin was measured to 20 patients suffering from erysipelas and 10 normal controls. Significantly low levels of plasma fibronectin were detected in the group of patients (134 +/- 7.4 g./ml) in comparison to the normal control group (352.6 +/- 42.9 g./ml) p less than 0.001. This could be of prognostic value and also of therapeutic one. Some centres have tried fibronectin replacement therapy in the treatment of critically ill patients with severe bacterial sepsis.

Distribution of the fibronectin (FN) present in the forearm skin was studied in 23 controls and 34 insulin dependent diabetics. All the subjects were lean males under 50 years. After biopsy FN was studied by an indirect immunofluorescence technic. Fibronectin in human solid tumors was studied by indirect immunofluorescence staining of biopsy material.
