The manuscript presented herein documents the findings of filaria nematodes in 5 keel-billed toucans, and one emerald toucanet, originated from 2 private aviaries in Mexico City during two years. The birds displayed ruffled feathers, depression, inability to perch, convulsions, and sudden death. Furthermore, thickened wall of the aortic and brachiocephalic arteries, with connective tissue proliferation and chondroid metaplasia were observed. Molecular characterization matched Filarioidea sp (Nematoda: Spirurida: Filarioidea). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first documented report of fi

In the present paper, we report the results we obtained using several cytochemical techniques to analyze the infective larva of Wuchereria bancrofti. An imidazole osmium tetroxide solution was used to visualize unsaturated fatty acids. A highly contrasted material forming a continuous structure was observed on the larval surface and over the epicuticle. A strong reaction was observed on the esophagus and also on the inner secreted material. Carbohydrates containing vic-glycol groups were not observed on the cuticle of the third-stage larva of W. bancrofti submitted to the Thiéry technique. Usi

Data are reported on the genetic structure of three Onchocerca volvulus populations, respectively from Mali (savanna), Ivory Coast (forest), and Zaire (forest gallery in savanna). Electrophoretic analysis, carried out on 25 gene-enzyme systems, has shown a remarkable genetic heterogeneity existing within O.volvulus. Zaire and West Africa populations appear chiefly differentiated at Mdh-1 and 6Pgdh loci, their average Nei's genetic distance being 0.11. In West Africa Nei's D found between the savanna and forest samples is 0.04. The savanna population from Zaire is more similar to the savanna on

This paper demonstrates that vitamin A deficient (A-) cotton rats are more susceptible to infection with Litomosoides carinii than normal (A+) cotton rats. However, embryogenesis is frequently retarded in female worms from A- hosts. Groups of young cotton rats were depleted of their liver stores of vitamin A by feeding them a vitamin A free diet from weaning. From 6 weeks of age this diet was supplemented with either 2, 5, 10, 25 or 100 IU vitamin A per 100 g body weight per day and half the animals in each group were infected with L. carinii. At autopsy, 51 days post-infection, serum vitamin

For optimal solubilization of immunoreactive proteins of filarial parasites, adult worms of Acanthocheilonema viteae were extracted in different detergents including anionic, cationic, nonionic and zwitterionic agents under varying incubation periods. Each preparation was then analysed by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting using pooled sera from Mastomys natalensis infected with A. viteae. Amongst the detergents used, maximum immunoreactive proteins were exposed by sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), closely followed by sodium deoxycholate (DOC). Nevertheless, a few additional protein bands were recognized

Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) administered orally to jirds and striped mice (300 mg/kg for five days) was effective against the microfilariae of Monanema globulosa in experimental infections. Based on the small numbers of animals used in this trial, it is questionable whether the drug had significant activity against the adult worms in pulmonary arteries. Densities of microfilariae in the ears (mf/mg) fell by 80-100% of pretreatment levels over a four week period following treatment. There was no apparent action of the developing embryos in utero, and in some rodents densities of microfilariae in t

Pelecitus meridionaleporinus n. sp. from the Tehuantepec jackrabbit is described. The new species differs from Pelecitus helicinus (Molin, 1860) in having delicate transverse striations, a salient vulva, and a readily apparent preesophageal ring; P. helicinus has teardrop cells around the vulva, which are lacking in the species presently described. The new species is different from Pelecitus scapiceps (Leidy, 1886) in having the vulva anterior to the esophageal-intestinal junction and wider lateral alae. Pelecitus scapiceps is found in the tarsal bursa of the hind feet of lagomorphs, whereas P

Brugia lepori sp. n., a filarial nematode from the abdominal lymphatics and subcutaneous tissues of rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus, S. floridanus), from St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, is described. Brugia lepori is of moderate size (males 12 to 19 mm, females 39 to 45 mm) and within the genus most closely resembles Brugia beaveri of the raccoon, from which it can be distinguished by its larger size, smaller spicules, and smaller microfilaria which has a shorter cephalic space. Brugia lepori is only the second species of Brugia described from North America and the third species reported from the

The genus Litomosoides Chandler, 1931, includes species that as adults occur in the thoracic and abdominal cavity of mammalian hosts and are presumably vectored by mites. The vertebrate hosts include a variety of Neotropical mammals such as phyllostomid and mormoopid bats; cricetid, sciurid, and hystricognath rodents; and didelphid marsupials. It has been suggested that Litomosoides is not a monophyletic group and that rampant horizontal transfer explains their presence in disparate groups of mammals. Herein we present a phylogenetic reconstruction including mitochondrial genes of 13 vouchered

1. A Mg2+ independent, Ca(2+)-ATPase requiring high concentrations of Ca2+ (5 mM) for the activation, equally distributed in cuticle-muscular-hypodermis, genital organs and gastrointestinal tissues and mainly localized in 10,000 g pellet fraction, was identified in Setaria cervi, a bovine filarial parasite. 2. Filarial enzyme showed Km value of 3.33 mM for ATP as computed from the double reciprocal Lineweaver-Burk plot. 3. The enzyme could be completely solubilized by sonication with about 4-fold increase in specific activity of the enzyme. 4. The enzyme showed about 2-fold activation by the c

Chandlerella quiscali is a filarial nematode parasitizing the brain of the common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula versicolor), blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata bromia), brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater ater), and starling (Sturnus vulgaris). Filarial infections of many wild bird species are common but natural infections of domestic fowl are rare. The habits of many wild birds commonly bring them in close association with domestic poultry. Because of the high prevalence of C. quiscali in grackles (98%) and the pathogenesis it might cause in an unnatural host, this parasite was used to test the rec

Trials were carried out to study the humoral immune response of blackflies to filariae following infection using the intrathoracic injection technique. An induced 66 kDa protein was abundant in the haemolymph of the European species Simulium ornatum following infection with bovine Onchocerca lienalis. This protein was apparently at higher concentrations in the haemolymph of sham-inoculated flies, i.e. flies that received sterile medium without the parasites. A molecule of the same size was also observed in the haemolymph of infected S. damnosum s.l. following infection with human O. volvulus o

A mosquito survey was conducted to identify which species of mosquitoes carry Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy) (Nematoda: Filarioidea), dog heartworm, in northeast Arkansas. Using polymerase chain reaction, mosquitoes were analyzed for D. immitis, Dirofilaria repens Railliet & Henry, and Acanthocheilonema dracunculoides Cobbold. Mosquitoes were collected from April to October 2009 using black light ultraviolet traps baited with dry ice. Sixteen mosquito species were identified. D. immitis was identified in nine mosquito species, which included Aedes vexans (Meigen), Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say, A

Laboratory-derived Simulium yahense and S. sanctipauli females were used to produce large numbers of Onchocerca volvulus infective stage larvae (L3) for use in assessing the possible chemoprophylactic potential of ivermectin in the chimpanzee model. Engorgement rates and subsequent post-prandial survival were correlated with the time at which adult flies were offered a carbohydrate source following emergence and the age of flies that fed on microfiladermic volunteers.

Ocular setariases of cattle were reported but those of equine hosts have never been reported in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We found motile worms in the aqueous humor of 15 horses (Equus spp.) from 12 localities in southern parts of Korea between January 2004 and November 2017. After the affected animals were properly restrained under sedation and local anesthesia, 10 ml disposable syringe with a 16-gauge needle was inserted into the anterior chamber of the affected eye to successfully remove the parasites. The male worm that was found in 7 of the cases showed a pair of lateral appendages n

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the potential vector role of Culicidae mosquitoes in Germany is very scanty, and until recently it was generally assumed that they are not involved in the transmission of anthroponotic or zoonotic pathogens in this country. However, anticipated changes in the course of global warming and globalization may alter their status.
METHODS: We conducted a molecular mass screening of mosquitoes for filarial parasites using mitochondrial 12S rRNA-based real-time PCR.
RESULTS: No parasites causing disease in humans such as Dirofilaria spp. were detected in about 83,000 mosquit

We describe a new species of Dipetalonema occurring in the body cavity of Ateles chamek (Humboldt, 1812) from north-central Bolivia. Morphologic characters serving to separate Dipetalonema yatesi n. sp. from known forms include a vagina vera with a simple tube and thin walls and a left spicule, which possesses a handle shorter than the lamina (ratio 2.7); the latter displays an anterior membranous alae similar in length to the terminal flagellum, a distal extremity of the left spicule within a simple hook and a membrane, phasmids at the basis of the lappets, and heterogeneous muscles occupying

The effects of co-culture with monkey kidney cells (LLCMK2), cell-conditioned medium and decreased atmospheric oxygen on the in vitro molting and viability of infective stage larvae (L3) of Onchocerca lienalis and O. volvulus were examined. O. lienalis L3 were cultured in an RPMI 1640-based medium in the presence of an LLCMK2 cell monolayer or in medium which had been conditioned for three days by cells. In paired experiments cell conditioned medium alone in 95% air/5% CO2 produced molting levels of 54 +/- 14% which increased to 67 +/- 20% in treatments cultured under decreased oxygen; this va

Some Onchocercidae nematodes such as Pelecitus are parasites of medical and veterinary importance. The adult stage of Pelecitus has been reported infecting birds, and the microfilaria has been associated to human blindness. However, in some of these cases, the nematode was incompletely identified at the species level due to the scarcity of morphological taxonomic keys and, also, to the lack of molecular diagnostic analysis. Here, we report a new Pelecitus species in a crested caracara (Caracara cheriway) producing a severe tenosynovitis and microfilarial dermatitis. It is also the first record
