Obtaining full, prompt payment for healthcare services rendered is critical for physicians and healthcare organizations. A little-known type of insurance--medical payments insurance--can help providers obtain payment for services provided to injured patients. Medical payments insurance riders are attached to some automobile insurance policies and to virtually all residential and commercial property insurance policies. In some instances, medical payments insurance can be collected directly from an injured patient's insurer, and determining fault is not an issue.

The growth of antitrust litigation in the health care area reflects the developing consensus that competition is as powerful a force in health care as it is elsewhere in the economy. Exclusive contracts between hospitals and hospital-based physician specialists have been prominent among the contested practices. Challenges to these arrangements uniformly assert an injury to competition; for example, that the contracts are a means of gaining monopoly power in some market. But these claims have lacked a solid theoretical basis for general hostility to exclusive dealing of this sort. This article

Although the use of derivatives, particularly interest rate swaps, has grown explosively over the past decade, derivative financial instrument use by nonprofits has received only limited attention in the research literature. Because little is known about the risk management activities of nonprofits, the impact of these instruments on the ability of nonprofits to raise capital may have significant public policy implications. The primary motivation of this study is to determine the types of derivatives used by nonprofits and estimate the frequency of their use among these organizations. Our stud

As health care spending continues to climb, government and industry, as the two major purchasers of health care services, are intensifying their scrutiny over health care delivery in an attempt to reduce their health care burden. The first round of utilization controls and reimbursement restrictions focused on necessity of admission and efficiency of care, causing a profound effect on hospital-based services. Declining occupancy rates, reduced inpatient reimbursements, and mounting contractual losses have pushed many hospitals to the point of financial disaster. The second round of controls ha

Catholic health care facilities must consider the business and legal risks, canon law, and other constraints when planning a joint venture with physicians. Participants should first establish goals and compatibility, then determine the venture's type (property, service), form ("true," lease, contract), and structure (corporation, partnership, joint property ownership, trust). The administrator must decide whether the facility will participate directly in the venture or form a separate organization. Participants must determine their relationships with the venture, choosing among many options. T

IMPORTANCE: The presence of management consultants in the US health care industry has increased dramatically in recent decades and is now higher than in most other sectors of the US economy. Hospitals hire management consultants to provide external expertise and advise on strategic planning, organizational change, cost cutting, and revenue-enhancement activities. Despite the prominence and influence of these firms, there is no empirical evidence in the US documenting either how much is spent on these services or whether that spending leads to measurable improvements.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify no

Aspects of the recent landmark healthcare reform legislation likely to prove beneficial to hospitals include changes to insurance markets, malpractice reform demonstrations, and funding to help hospitals with high volumes of preventable readmissions. Hospitals are likely to be adversely affected by scheduled payment cuts and the employer "free rider" penalty. The legislation also poses transformational opportunities and challenges for hospitals, stemming from measures designed to change the care delivery system and provisions regarding hospitals' tax-exempt status and pricing transparency.

The decision to invest in a medication-safety system should take into account not only implementation costs but also reduced hospital costs for treating complications resulting from medication errors and potential liability. Medication-safety programs should be analyzed and planned the same as any other investment. Providers should base their projected return from a medication-safety system on intangible benefits to the organization as well as an ROI calculation. Investment in medication-safety systems can be justified in terms of risk management and legal liability.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to quantify the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on hospital profitability in Korea by analyzing changes in the medical revenue-to-profit ratio (MRPR) and net income before reserve fund allocation (NIBR) before and after the pandemic onset. Additionally, it examined how financial outcomes varied by hospital ownership, geographic location, and type (secondary or tertiary), providing insights into the financial resilience of various hospital types during public health crises.
METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal analysis using publicly available

We wished to analyse the factors influencing the potential profitability of surgical operations under the National Health Service 'Payment by Results' scheme. First, we planned to develop a generic theoretical model describing the relationships between 'profit', 'procedure duration' and 'costs'. Second, for a group of specific operations, we planned to investigate (using analysis of hypothetical lists) whether it was possible for hospitals to make a profit when lists were maximally efficient. 'Efficient' meant full utilisation of the list time, with no gaps between cases and no case cancellati

BACKGROUND: The Government of Ontario, Canada, announced hospital funding reforms in 2011, including Quality-based Procedures (QBPs) involving pre-set funds for managing patients with specific diagnoses/procedures. A key goal was to improve quality of care across the jurisdiction.
METHODS: Interrupted time series evaluated the policy change, focusing on four QBPs (congestive heart failure, hip fracture surgery, pneumonia, prostate cancer surgery), on patients hospitalized 2010-2017. Outcomes included return to hospital or death within 30 days, acute length of stay (LOS), volume of admissions,

BACKGROUND: As costs continue to outpace reimbursements, hospital administrators and clinicians face increasing pressure to justify new capital purchases. Massachusetts Health Care Reform has added further economic challenges for Disproportionate Share Hospitals (DSH), as resources formerly available to treat the uninsured have been redirected. In this challenging climate, many hospitals still lack a standardized process for technology planning and/or vendor negotiation.

BACKGROUND: A Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) is a comprehensive, computer-based system designed to manage and streamline the entire spectrum of hospital operations, including administrative, clinical, and financial processes. It integrates various functions such as patient registration, medical records management, appointment scheduling, billing, and reporting into a cohesive network that facilitates efficient information flow and decision-making within a hospital setting (1-3). HMIS is essential for improving hospital efficiency through the integration of medical, administrativ

Kidney donor exchanges enable recipients with immunologically incompatible donors to receive compatible living donor grafts; however, the financial management of these exchanges, especially when an organ is shipped, is complex and thus has the potential to impede the broader implementation of donor exchange programs. Representatives from transplant centers that utilize the National Kidney Registry database to facilitate donor exchange transplants developed a financial model applicable to paired donor exchanges and donor chain transplants. The first tenet of the model is to eliminate financial

BACKGROUND: Although costs of providing care may decrease with hospital initiatives to improve obstetric and neonatal outcomes, the accompanying reduced adverse outcomes may negatively affect hospital revenues.
METHODS: In 2008 a Minnesota-based hospital system (Fairview Health Services) launched the Zero Birth Injury (ZBI) initiative, which used evidence-based care bundles to guide management of obstetric services. A pre-post analysis of financial impacts of ZBI was conducted by using hospital administrative records to measure costs and revenues associated with changes in maternal and neonat
