Chronic financial stress and cardiovascular disease risk: A prospective cohort study and Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The associations between chronic stress and incident CVDs and related mechanisms remain understudied. This study examined these associations and explored the potential mediators, including metabolism, body composition, immunity, lifestyle, and cognitive function. METHODS: We analyzed 399,998 participants without prior CVDs including stroke, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, or heart failure from the UK Biobank cohort. The multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was conducted to evaluate the associations between chronic stress and incident CVDs. Two-sampl

Fifteen-year trends in depression symptoms by sex, race, and financial stress among U.S. College Students.

INTRODUCTION: Depression has become increasingly prevalent in the last three decades. Close to half of the general population currently receives mental health services. Depression rates are especially high among youth and cause significant disability, especially among racial minority groups, women, and people of lower socio-economic status. However, more research is needed to understand differences in depression symptom presentation among different socio-demographic groups and overtime in college students. METHODS: We analyzed item-level depression data from approximately 560,000 U.S. college

Love after lockup: examining the role of marriage, social status, and financial stress among formerly incarcerated individuals.

BACKGROUND: Upon reintegration into society, formerly incarcerated individuals (FIIs) experience chronic financial stress due to prolonged unemployment, strained social relationships, and financial obligations. This study examined whether marriage and perceived social status can mitigate financial stress, which is deleterious to the well-being of FIIs. We also assessed whether sociodemographic factors influenced financial stress across marital status. We used cross-sectional data from 588 FIIs, collected in the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health. The financial stress outcome (Cronbach's [

Impact of Integrated Yoga Therapy on the Perceived Stress, Attention Level, and Financial Performance Among Stock Market Investors.

BACKGROUND: The stock market is crucial to the economy, investors playing a critical role in wealth creation. However, more than 95% of investors experience losses, primarily due to psychological, or behavioral obstacles. Fluctuating stress levels, lack of emotional control, delayed decision-making, indecision, lack of concentration, and unclear goals, are commonly cited reasons for most investors losing money in the stock market. OBJECTIVES: This study tries to find if practicing yoga can help such investors to mitigate the perceived stress, enhance the attention levels, and thereby increase

Subjective academic achievement and suicide behavior among university students in Ghana: A moderated mediation of financial stress and depression.

The study investigated the mediating role of depression in the association between subjective academic achievement and suicide behaviour. Further, we sought to find out whether financial stress would moderate such a plausible mediated relationship. A cross-sectional survey was used in the study. Out of 460 undergraduate students sampled for the study, 51.5% were male (Meanage = 20.7; SD = 3.19). We observed that subjective academic achievement has a positive effect on depression, which in turn has a positive impact on suicide behaviour. And this relationship is not influenced by financial stre

Physiological Effects of Psychological Interventions Among Persons with Financial Stress: A Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Introduction to Psychophysiological Economics.

It is known that economic problems can cause psychological stress, and that psychological stress causes physiological changes often linked to disease. Here we report a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on physiological effects of psychological treatment for individuals with economic problems. Of 5071 papers in our initial PsycInfo search, we identified 16 papers on physiological effects for psychological treatment of the economically stressed. We found 11 controlled studies, among which we found a small to moderate significant effect size, Hedges' g = 0.319, p < 0.001. The largest

Financial Stress and Tobacco Expenditure in Australian Households: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Prevalence and Association Across Wealth and Income Levels.

INTRODUCTION: Despite successful public health campaigns, tobacco use persists as a major cause of preventable illness and death. While tobacco taxation is recognized as an effective control strategy, concerns remain about potential financial strain on lower socioeconomic groups. This study investigates the relationship between household tobacco expenditure and financial stress in Australia, a country with high tobacco taxes and declining smoking rates. METHODS: Household data from the 2015-16 Australian Household Expenditure Survey were analyzed (N = 10 036). Financial stress was measured us

Financial, housing, food, and healthcare insecurities and their independent and joint associations with depressive symptoms and stress in a U.S. cohort of adults with and without HIV.

Financial, housing, food, and healthcare insecurities are prevalent forms of material-need insecurity (MNI) in the U.S. that often co-occur, with significant consequences for health. We investigated how these MNIs overlap and relate jointly and independently to mental health among people with and without HIV enrolled in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). Confirmatory bifactor analyses were used to examine how much unique variability remained in subfactors for financial, housing, food, and healthcare insecurities after accounting for common, underlying material hardship, described her

The COVID-19 outbreak, which was followed by home confinement, is expected to have had profound negative impact on the mental health of people. Associated factors, such as losing jobs and income, can be expected to lead to an increased risk of suffering from psychopathological problems. Therefore, this study was aimed at researching the associations of job and income loss with mental health, as well as the possible mediating role of perceived financial stress during the COVID-19 outbreak. The sample included 2381 Spanish workers who were interviewed right after the first COVID-19 lockdown. Mea

Moderation of financial stress and cardiovascular disease risk in black catholics: A social-ecological pathway utilizing latent class and structural equation analyses.

BACKGROUND: Chronic financial stress drives cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet its impact within Black Catholic communities remains understudied. Using a profile-based, socio-ecological framework, we centered chronic financial stress and low Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores, as correlates of downstream health risk, and we modeled racial discrimination as an upstream moderator that intensifies this trajectory. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 285 racially and religiously diverse adults were analyzed. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified distinct stress profiles, and structural equation
