The Role of Social Support in Buffering the Financial Toxicity of Breast Cancer: A Qualitative Study of Patient Experiences.

Background/Objectives: Financial distress from the direct and indirect costs of cancer treatment is a critical issue for many patients with breast cancer, particularly those from underserved populations who may be more vulnerable to financial hardship and its negative impacts on quality of life and clinical outcomes (i.e., financial toxicity). Few investigations, however, focus on protective factors that safeguard against financial toxicity. This study explores how social support might reduce financial toxicity among patients with breast cancer who are at high risk for financial hardship. Meth

Financial Support to Eligible Countries for the Switch From Trivalent to Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine-Lessons Learned.

The global switch from trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) to bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) ("the switch") presented an unprecedented challenge to countries. In order to mitigate the risks associated with country-level delays in implementing the switch, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative provided catalytic financial support to specific countries for operational costs unique to the switch. Between November 2015 and February 2016, a total of approximately US$19.4 million in financial support was provided to 67 countries. On average, country budgets allocated 20% to human resources, 23%

Two Semiconductor Companies' Financial Support Compensation (FSC) Programs for Semiconductor Workers with Suspected Work-Related Diseases (WRDs).

This study described two companies' financial compensation programs for semiconductor workers with suspected work-related diseases (WRDs) and discussed the major related issues. The key contents of the programs found on the websites opened by two semiconductor companies (Samsung and SK Hynix) were cited. In order to select the suspected WRDs for the FSC, all available epidemiologic studies related to health problems conducted in the semiconductor industry were reviewed. Most program contents are similar, although the amount of financial compensation and a few types of disease available for com

Using Enhanced Rates to Support and Financially Maintain a HealthySteps Program at an Academic Primary Care Practice.

HealthySteps is an evidence-based, interdisciplinary program that promotes positive parenting as well as the health and well-being of infants and toddlers, specifically in underserved communities. In Maryland, Medicaid provides enhanced reimbursement for recognized HealthySteps services under code H0025. This quality improvement initiative evaluated whether implementing the use of H0025 could support the financial sustainability of HealthySteps in an academic, hospital-based primary care practice, aiming to increase H0025 utilization from 0% to 70% within 12 months. Using clinical decision support to improve urine culture diagnostic stewardship, antimicrobial stewardship, and financial cost: A multicenter experience.

OBJECTIVE: Despite evidence to the contrary, many practitioners continue to inappropriately screen for and treat bacteria in the urine of clinically asymptomatic patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a new order set on the number of urine culture performed, antibiotic days of therapy (DOT), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), and associated financial impact. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental before-and-after intervention. SETTING: We conducted this study at 5 Catholic Health Initiative (CHI) hospitals in Texas that use the same electronic health recor

Involving Parents in Prevention: A Case Example of Research and Intervention Development to Improve Financial Well-Being Support.

The adverse effects on parent and child outcomes of poverty and stressors associated with low income are well established. With notable exceptions, however, the potential role of frontline services in improving family financial well-being is underexplored. This article outlines how patient and public involvement (PPI) was initiated early on in research on financial well-being support (FWbS). It illustrates how research can build on and integrate what parents say about services and how to research them. The involvement work was undertaken in one city in part to inform the adaptation of an incom

The Medicine Success fund: financial support for widening participation medical students improves wellbeing and increases sense of belonging.

BACKGROUND: UK medicine is an elite profession engaging in widening participation (WP) efforts to diversify the workforce so as to better represent the society it serves, and thus, enhance patient care. Despite years of sector-wide efforts, medical students and doctors from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds remain minoritised in medicine. WP activities primarily focus on increasing access to medical degrees, while widening success for WP students once at university is underexplored or addressed. Socio-economic disadvantage shapes the experiences of WP medical students, who face unique f

Clinical, Ethical, and Financial Considerations With Red Blood Cell Transfusion Support at the End of Life in Hematologic Malignancies.

Patients with advanced hematological malignancies often have red blood cell (RBC) transfusion needs at the end of life (EOL) to improve debilitating anemia-related symptoms. Given that patients with hematologic malignancies and their caregivers find that transfusions improve energy and quality of life, access becomes a critical factor influencing hospice enrollment decisions, given variable access to transfusions in hospice settings. Additionally, because blood is a finite resource, this raises important questions about its availability in hospice care. This paper aims to explore the clinical,

Referral of Pediatric Moyamoya for Revascularization: Financial and Quality Data Supporting Private Insurer Approval for Out-of-Network Care.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya is a rare arteriopathy affecting the intracranial circulation with a risk of stroke in the pediatric population. High-volume centers provide improved outcomes after surgical revascularization compared with low-volume centers. However, private insurers are often reluctant to approve care out-of-network. We hypothesized that rare diseases that can be treated in a single procedure, such as revascularization for moyamoya, can yield improved clinical outcomes with substantial cost savings to insurance companies when approved for care at high-volume centers of excellence. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) and focus group discussion (FGD) were conducted simultaneously to identify preferences for five incentive delivery strategy features: value, eligibility, recipient, format and disbursement frequency. We used consecutive sampling to recruit AYA (14-24 years) living with HIV attending three health f

Social support, financial status, and depression among French healthcare workers one year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Early studies on factors associated with depressive symptoms among healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic were primarily related to working conditions and exposure to the pandemic. Despite the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, research focusing on factors related to social support and financial situation was scarce. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between HCWs' financial and social support, and the presence of depressive symptoms in France one year after the pandemic's onset. METHODS: This study used data from a cross-sectional, online, vo

Do different types of financial support after illness or injury affect socio-economic outcomes? A natural experiment in New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: In New Zealand, people unable to work due to an illness may be eligible for a means-tested benefit whereas injured people are eligible for a wide range of support including earnings-related compensation through the no-fault Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). The effect of this difference on socio-economic outcomes has not been investigated before. METHODS: A comparative cohort study was undertaken of stroke versus injury. Individuals aged 18-64, who had a first-stroke (n = 109) were matched by age, sex and functional impairment with injured individuals (n = 429) participatin
