OBJECTIVE: A previously unreported source of injuries to children, the exercise bicycle, is identified and the associated injuries and their treatment are described.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of clinical records and the records of the Victorian Injury Surveillance System.
SETTING: The Plastic Surgery Unit of the Royal Children's Hospital, Parkville, Victoria.
PATIENTS: Seventeen children with finger injuries from exercise bicycles presented to the Emergency Department of the hospital and one presented to one of us (K L M) at his private practice. Sixteen of the 18 children were under f

Closed dislocations of finger bones is a rare injury in children. Most often complications are localized in the metacarpophalangeal articulation of the first finger. The main method of treatment of fresh dislocations is a one-step closed hand reposition. In case of its failure an open setting of the dislocation should be performed along with liquidation of the cause of interposition. The method of choice of treatment of neglected dislocations of fingers in children is the application of a compression-distraction apparatus.

Infants are occasionally injured while playing with their mother's eyebrow razor, and we have treated several infants with flexor tendon injuries, which in some cases were accompanied by damage to the corresponding digital nerves and/or vessels. Here, we report the outcomes in a retrospective case series, with a review of literature. Between January 2013 and October 2019, 8 patients who met our inclusion criteria were initially investigated. The inclusion criteria were: (1) injured by an eyebrow razor during fiddling or grasping, and (2) the availability of complete medical records and radiolo

BACKGROUND: Mallet finger is a common injury of the extensor tendon insertion causing an extension lag of the distal interphalangeal joint.
METHODS: We reviewed the most current literature on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of mallet finger injuries focusing on the indications and outcomes of surgical intervention.
RESULTS: Nonoperative management has been advocated for almost all mallet finger injuries; however, complex injuries are usually treated surgically. There is still controversy regarding the absolute indications for surgical intervention.
CONCLUSIONS: Although surgery

Multiple soft tissue finger defects in different shapes and locations are usually difficult to manage. Such defects commonly involve tendons and bones. Palmar soft tissue defects may also lead to vascular compromise. In this retrospective report, we report the results of seven patients with multiple soft tissue finger defects that were covered by syndactylizing arterialized venous flaps. Six of the patients suffered hot-pressing machine and crushing injuries, one patient had a rolling belt injury. All patients presented with soft tissue defects on palmar or dorsal sides involving at least two

Improper diagnosis and treatment of finger injuries can cause deformity and dysfunction over time. A basic understanding of the complex anatomy of the finger and of common tendon and ligament injury mechanisms can help physicians properly diagnose and treat finger injuries. Evaluation includes a general musculoskeletal examination as well as radiography (oblique, anteroposterior, and true lateral views). Splinting and taping are effective treatments for tendon and ligament injuries. Treatment should restrict the motion of injured structures while allowing uninjured joints to remain mobile. Alt

Soft tissue digital injury of the hand is a common presenting complaint in the emergency setting. Although initial work-up requires physical examination and radiographs, many of these entities may be radiographically occult and solely appreciated on ultrasound (US) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). If undiagnosed, these conditions may lead to sequela of untreated disease including early osteoarthritis, pain, permanent deformity, and immobility. Soft tissue finger injuries that may not be readily apparent without the use of MRI or US are discussed. The key imaging features of radiolucent for

Standard treatment protocols following a mallet finger injury involve lengthy periods of immobilization in an effort to ensure the terminal extensor tendon is able to maintain the distal interphalangeal joint in extension. This author describes a technique that utilizes a combination of an orthosis and kinesiotape, thereby creating a treatment protocol that shortens the immobilization phase for these patients. - Victoria Priganc, PhD, OTR, CHT, CLT, Practice Forum Editor.

Periphyseal stress injuries (PPSIs) in young rock climbers are gaining recognition due to the surge in popularity of the sport. These injuries, occurring near the growth plates of fingers, pose diagnostic challenges due to their subtle presentation and potential long-term complications if left untreated. This review emphasizes the importance of radiologists' awareness of PPSIs, covering their anatomy, biomechanics, and imaging findings. Techniques like the "crimp-grip" in climbing exacerbate the vulnerability of the physis, leading to repetitive stress injuries. Imaging modalities such as radi

Common chronic hand pathologies seen by family physicians include carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and de Quervain tenosynovitis. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compressive neuropathy of the upper extremity and is caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is caused by a metaplasia of the A1 flexor tendon pulley and the flexor tendon causing increased friction and decreased space for tendon gliding in the flexor tendon sheath. de Quervain tenosynovitis has a similar metaplasia of the tissues of the first dors

Patients commonly present to UK emergency departments with injuries to the tips of their fingers. Mallet finger is one of the most common injuries, resulting from an injury to the extensor tendon over the dorsal surface of the distal phalanges of the hand. Timely recognition, diagnosis and management are required to prevent complications. This article provides an overview of the pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, diagnosis and management of mallet finger injuries.

Twelve children aged between 18 months and 11 years old who had sustained a severe fingertip amputation with total or subtotal pulp loss were treated with a distal-based thenar flap. The injuries were palmar oblique amputations or avulsion injuries involving the pulp and the nail bed. The pedicles of the thenar flaps were divided after 18 to 25 days and none suffered any necrosis. At the final follow-up, no interphalangeal joint contractures were found, the average two point discrimination was 5mm, the thenar scar was asymptomatic and the subcutaneous tissue of the thenar flap was providing su

Restoration of finger extension in mutilating hand injuries is crucial for restoring prehension and independent use of the hand. Patients often express desire to restore finger extension once finger flexion is achieved. However, the extensive forearm injury precludes use of any of conventional donors like the wrist or finger flexors for transfer to restore finger extension. Two patients with sequelae of mangled forearm injuries, underwent biceps and long head of triceps transfer to the finger extensors to improve opening up of the fingers. We discuss the treatment considerations while planning

INTRODUCTION: The surgical treatment of ring avulsion injuries is still challenging. This study provides data concerning epidemiology and factors influencing finger survival rate. We wanted to answer the question whether microsurgical advancement and a high level of surgical expertise nowadays may improve the outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 11/2007 and 06/2016 95 ring avulsions were treated (classified according to Kay). Complete documentation was available from 87 patients (25 female). The mean age was 34 (4-82) years. Intact perfusion (Kay I) was preoperatively seen in 20 fingers whi

Injuries of the fingers and thumb in the athlete are common. Mallet finger, jersey finger, boutonniere deformity, Bennett and Rolando fractures, and gamekeeper's thumb are just a few of the injuries that can occur in athletes. A thorough understanding of the mechanism of injury, osseous and soft tissue abnormalities, imaging features, and treatment is important in the care of athletes. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is important and may help minimize outcomes of malunion, posttraumatic arthritis, and debility.

The main risks in case of extensor tendon laceration are firstly, the possibility of misdiagnosis, and secondly the occurrence of adhesions which can compromise the excursion of the extensor apparatus. Extensor tendon lesions at the dorsum of the wrist and hand have a better prognosis regarding the postoperative results than lesions at the finger level. Protected early mobilisation methods represent a real advance in the postoperative management of extensor tendon lesions.
