Female suicides in Berlin with the use of firearms.

The Statistical Office of Berlin recorded a total of 5488 suicides within the 10-year period 1990-1999 (3550 males, 1938 females). Firearms were used in 238 cases (218 males, 20 females). An autopsy was performed in 19 of the 20 female cases. The women's ages ranged from 21 to 88 years. Their marital status was single (n=6), married (n=5), divorced (n=5) and widowed (n=3). Eight of the women had one or more children. A suicide note was found in eight cases; six women had a history of psychiatric illness, and six had previously attempted suicide. Predominant among the suicide motives were menta

Cases of death caused by gas or warning firearms.

Five cases of lethal injuries caused by gas or warning firearms are discussed. In one suicide case a modified weapon (elongated barrel) and steel bullets were used to fire a shot into the head, the bullets lodged in the skull and lethal bleeding resulted. In the other cases conventional gas weapons without evidence of alteration were used for contact shots; injuries were caused by the effect of propelling powder gases. Two of these cases were suicides (temporal contact shot and back of the neck contact shot), one was an accident (inguinal contact shot with lethal bleeding), and one was an atta

[Orbital firearm injuries].

BACKGROUND: Injuries caused by firearms are fortunately rare in the field of ophthalmology. The treatment of an affected patient is a special challenge both ophthalmologically and emotionally. METHODS: We report on seven consecutive cases of patients with an orbital gunshot injury who presented in a university hospital over a period of 11 years. The course of events leading to the injury with the weapon involved, the type of projectile, the injury pattern, cranial imaging, treatment and course were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of seven cases of injuries caused by firearms could be documented

Universal Strategies to End Appeal of Firearms in America.

Efforts to reduce firearm violence and injury in the US focus mainly on policies that deter persons at risk of unjustified firearm use. These programs attempt to prevent those who might use firearms from harming others or themselves. What has been overlooked are more universal strategies to reduce the demand for firearms, especially handguns, which are the most frequently used weapon for violent purposes. It is also the weapon that is cited by the Supreme Court as sufficiently popular to justify its protection under the Second Amendment. Here it is argued that the widespread portrayal of firea

Victimology of Mass Shootings and Mass Murders Not Involving Firearms.

Most research to date has focused on perpetrators of mass murder incidents. Hence, there is little information on victims. We examined 973 mass murders that occurred in the United States between 1900 and 2019 resulting in 5,273 total fatalities and 4,498 nonfatal injuries for a total of 9,771 victims (on average 10 victims per incident). Approximately 64% of victims of mass murder were White individuals, 13% were Black individuals, 6% were Asian individuals, and 14% were Latinx individuals. Given the higher number of nonfatal injuries per non-firearm mass murder event (11.0 vs. 2.8, p < .001),

Chemistry and lung toxicity of particulate matter emitted from firearms.

Smoke emissions produced by firearms contain hazardous chemicals, but little is known if their properties change depending on firearm and ammunition type and whether such changes affect toxicity outcomes. Pulmonary toxicity was assessed in mice exposed by oropharyngeal aspiration to six different types of smoke-related particulate matter (PM) samples; (1) handgun PM, (2) rifle PM, (3) copper (Cu) particles (a surrogate for Cu in the rifle PM) with and without the Cu chelator penicillamine, (4) water-soluble components of the rifle PM, (5) soluble components with removal of metal ions, and (6)

Firearms, hanging, and drowning suicides in the Republic of ireland.

BACKGROUND: The firearms climate in Ireland is rapidly changing, and there is currently no research on the risk profiles of those dying through firearms suicides. AIMS: To compare the sociodemographic profile of firearms suicide deaths with hanging and drowning suicides. METHODS: Analyses are based on data for 9,674 suicides that occurred between 1980 and 2005 and provided by the Central Statistics Office of Ireland (CSO). Risk factors included were gender, place of residence, employment status (agri-employed/not agri-employed), marital status, and age. RESULTS: Those dying by shooting were

Washington State Assault Weapon Firearm Violence Before and After Firearm Legislation Reform.

BACKGROUND: In January of 2019, Washington State (WA) passed Initiative 1639 making it illegal for persons <21 years-old to buy assault weapons (AWs). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of WA-1639 on firearm-related incidents involving AWs by those <21 years-old in WA, hypothesizing a decrease in incidents after WA-1639. METHODS: Retrospective (2016-2021) data on firearm violence (FV) events were gathered from the Gun Violence Archive. The rate of FV was weighted per 100,000 people. Total monthly incidents, injuries, and deaths were compared pre-law (January 2016-December 2018) vs post-

Receptivity of providing firearm safety storage devices to parents along with firearms safety education.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, 33% of households with children contain firearms, however only one-third reportedly store firearms securely. It's estimated that 31% of unintentional firearm injury deaths can be prevented with safety devices. Our objective was to distribute safe storage devices, provide safe storage education, evaluate receptivity, and assess impact of intervention at follow-up. METHOD: At five independent, community safety events, parents received a safe storage device after completing a survey that assessed firearms storage methods and parental comfort with discussions reg

[Attempted suicide by firearms: a retrospective study of 161 cases].

OBJECTIVES: To determine the specific clinical aspects of patients with suicidal behaviour by firearm and investigate the specificities of the suicide method. BACKGROUND: Suicidal behaviour represents a major public health problem throughout the world. Attempted suicide and completed suicide by firearms rates are very high both in Europe and in the United States. Preventive aspects presently preoccupy the physicians and the politicians. However, methods of suicide are understudied in Europe for the benefit of psychopathological and epidemiological aspects of suicide. Only a minority of studie

[Dangers of blank firearms--risk of injury and expert assessment].

Starters' pistols have a wounding potential which strongly depends on the shot range and the combination of weapon and ammunition. The detrimental effect consists of five aspects: gas pressure, particles, thermal effect, chemical irritation and shooting noise. Fatal injuries are caused by contact shots in the head, neck or chest. Shots from less than 5 cm distance can lead to loss of the eye. Particles work as small projectiles at distances of less than 50 cm and cause powder tattooing, concerning the eye however severe cornea injuries are possible. The thermal effect can be observed with shoo

Characteristics of firearms and gunshot wounds as markers of suicide.

Data from a total of 1,200 cases that the Medical Examiner of Dallas County, Texas, ruled as suicide with a firearm have been compared with the results of forensic laboratory examinations and tests; 75% are with handguns and 25% are with long guns. The incidence of suicides by gender yields 82% males and 18% females, with the most common entrance site being the head. With regard to racial distribution of persons committing suicide, > 88% are white in the study population group, which is 76% white. Data are presented for the incidence of blood detected inside and on the muzzle end of the barrel

[Penetrating eye injuries caused by firearms. Apropos of 17 cases].

The authors present 17 cases of perforating ocular injuries caused by fire arms. They successively describe circumstances of trauma, initial injuries, surgical techniques employed and their results. The mean follow-up of patients is about one year. They particularly insist on severity of this type of trauma and legislative problems caused by free sale of some of these arms, more specially so called self defence pellets guns.

Firearm deaths by law enforcement.

The use of deadly force during law enforcement is a matter that compels public scrutiny. There were 42 gunshot deaths caused by police over a 4-year period in New York City. The decedents' average age was 31 years and ranged from 17 to 64 years. There were 41 males and one female; and 26 Black, nine Hispanic, and seven White decedents. Ethanol and/or drugs of abuse were detected in 78% (31/40) of the decedents. The vast majority of shootings occurred with the police responding to a crime and 90% of the decedents were armed (26 handguns, six knives, one axe, one metal pipe, and one toy gun). Ve

Surveying practicing firearm examiners.

A sample (n = 79) of practicing firearm and toolmark examiners was queried about casework as well as their views about the potential role that statistics might play in future firearm examinations and expert witness testimony. Principal findings include: The modal response for time spent conducting bullet examinations is 2-4 hours, and the modal response for cartridge casings is 1-2 hours. The average participant (median) makes an identification in 65% of casework, makes an elimination in 12% of casework, and reports that the examination was inconclusive in 20% of casework calls.
