Recovery of alkaline proteinases from fisheries wastes: biochemical characterization and applications.

Fish visceral waste, which is normally discarded, is considered one of the richest sources of proteinases with potential biotechnological applications. For this reason, alkaline proteinases from viscera of Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi, Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis, Brazilian codling Urophycis brasiliensis, and stripped weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa were characterized. Individuals were caught by a commercial fleet off the coast of the Argentinean Sea. The intestine and pyloric caeca were dissected out and then minced and triturated with distilled water. The proteinase activity o

Risk Assessment in Artisanal Fisheries in Developing Countries: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Artisanal fisheries generally do not have injury prevention plans and safety or quality management systems on board, thus making them prone to more fatal and nonfatal injuries. The objective of the study is to systematically review and synthesize the literature to identify the risks of injuries (fatal and nonfatal) and health problems in artisanal fisheries in developing countries. METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out from December 2019 to March 2020. Articles were included with at least 1 outcome of interest (fatal injuries, nonfatal injuries, health problems

Applying genetic techniques to study remote shark fisheries in northeastern Madagascar.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The shark fisheries of Madagascar remain largely unstudied. Remoteness makes fisheries monitoring challenging while the high value of shark fins combined with the extreme poverty in Madagascar creates intensive pressure on shark resources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We use DNA barcoding and species-specific PCR assays to characterize shark fisheries in Antongil Bay in northeastern Madagascar. RESULTS: The 239 samples taken from individuals collected in 2001 and 2002 correspond to 19 species. The four most common species were Sphyrna lewini, Rhizoprionodon acutus, Carcharhinu

Ciguatera fish poisoning and fisheries development in the South Pacific Region.

Ciguatera fish poisoning represents an impediment to the development of fisheries based on shallow water reef fish stocks and to the food security of islands where agriculture is limited. Although fisheries development initiatives in the past 20 years in the Pacific have focused on the development of deep slope fisheries and fisheries for large pelagics such as tuna, shallow reef fisheries continue to be a major animal protein source for Pacific Islanders and a source of commercial revenue for fishermen. Statistics on ciguatera outbreaks in the Pacific are limited to local databases in Hawaii

Predictive modelling of the growth and survival of Listeria in fishery products.

Predictive microbiology provides a powerful tool to aid the exposure assessment phase of 'quantitative microbial risk assessment'. Using predictive models changes in microbial populations on foods between the point of production/harvest and the point of eating can be estimated from changes in product parameters (temperature, storage atmosphere, pH, salt/water activity, etc.). Thus, it is possible to infer exposure to Listeria monocytogenes at the time of consumption from the initial microbiological condition of the food and its history from production to consumption. Predictive microbiology mo

Progressive sensorineural hearing impairment in professional fishery divers.

There have been many reports of a high rate of hearing impairment in divers. A prospective study was performed to determine whether sensorineural hearing acuity in the same divers deteriorated faster than in a normal population as they continued diving. After an observation period of approximately 5 years, audiometric examination was performed on a group of professional fishery divers who had normal hearing or sensorineural hearing loss at the time of initial study. Thirty-three ears of 18 divers were included in statistical analyses. The average hearing deterioration in the divers in 5 years,

[Fishery resource biodiversity and sustainable utilization in mangrove wetlands.].

Mangrove wetlands are important ecotone linking terrestrial and marine ecosystems and provide essential habitats that maintain coastal fishery resource diversity and ecosystem functioning. With increasing global concerns on mangrove conservation and restoration, the protection and sustainable utilization of mangrove fishery resources have become important research topics. We summarized the composition and community structures of fishery biological resources in mangrove wetlands, elucidated the ecological roles of mangrove habitats in sustaining fishery resources, reviewed methodological advanc

Mercury contamination and exposure assessment of fishery products in Korea.

In this study, total (T-Hg) and methyl mercury (Me-Hg) contamination was investigated in fishery products including canned fish, fish sauces, dried bonito and frozen tuna sashimi, collected from retail markets in Korea, to assess dietary exposure. Direct mercury analyser and gas chromatography-electron captured detector were employed to measure T-Hg and Me-Hg, respectively. The highest T-Hg and Me-Hg contamination was present in tuna sashimi, followed by dried bonito, respectively. Canned tuna showed more frequent detection and higher content than other canned fishery products. The weekly expo

Importance of fisheries for food security across three climate change vulnerable deltas.

Deltas are home to a large and growing proportion of the world's population, often living in conditions of extreme poverty. Deltaic ecosystems are ecologically significant as they support high biodiversity and a variety of fisheries, however these coastal environments are extremely vulnerable to climate change. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (Bangladesh/India), the Mahanadi (India), and the Volta (Ghana) are among the most important and populous delta regions in the world and they are all considered at risk of food insecurity and climate change. The fisheries sector is vital for populations tha

Fishermen's interests and cooperation: preconditions for joint management of Swedish coastal fisheries.

The participation of fishermen in fisheries management is discussed with varying ideas under the notions of "co-management", "participatory management" or "local management". Empirical studies within Swedish fishery have thrown new light on the preconditions for fishermen's participation in fisheries management. Among the important factors influencing failure or success are the two which we discuss here: the question of articulation, organization and representation of interests of fishermen and the question of trust between the groups that are usually cooperating in resource management, fisher

A Bering Sea marine heatwave triggers unprecedented crab hybridization, challenging fisheries management.

Marine heatwaves are increasingly recognized for their capacity to generate ecological surprises, yet the pathways that propagate these unexpected responses are often poorly understood. Here, we document an unanticipated ecological response 7 y after a Bering Sea marine heatwave, in which formerly rare snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) × Tanner crab (C. bairdi) hybrid abundance increased 13.4-fold, and the proportion of commercial-sized hybrid males increased 13.1-fold, relative to historical averages. Using causal modeling, we show that the hybrid crab surge was mediated by a heatwave-induced c

Is small really small? Re-characterising tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean.

Small-scale fisheries (SSF) play a critical role in providing food security, livelihood, and employment. However, SSF have received less attention in the context of regional fisheries management and continue to be poorly understood and not well included in fishery management frameworks. The lack of understanding concerning SSF within regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) might be further exacerbated by the absence of a unified definition of SSF within RFMOs, which often undermines data collection and the general availability of information on SSF. This paper aims to trace SSF def

Thermal Vulnerability of Reef Fish and Implications for Subsistence Fisheries Throughout the Caribbean.

Dual biodiversity and climate crises have exacerbated declines in global fisheries, resulting in food insecurity for communities that depend on subsistence fishing. As fish populations change and shift their geographic distributions under a changing environment, long-term planning of fisheries management becomes critical for ensuring food security. Here, we first present physiologically informed species distribution models (pSDM) of seven finfish species in the Caribbean that are important for subsistence in some coastal areas. These models identified areas at risk of climate-driven declines a

PFAS 'forever' chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are widespread in UK fisheries.

Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) pose a serious threat to global environmental and human health. Among the most concerning are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and pharmaceuticals, which have been detected at alarming concentrations in waterways and wildlife, including fish. However, there is limited information on the concentrations of many of these pollutants in UK marine fish. Although, fish consumption from UK waters is a potential source of exposure to a range of POPs, there have been few assessments of exposure and risks from UK fisheries. In this paper, we quantified th

Movement traits important to conservation and fisheries management: an example with red snapper.

Site fidelity, space use, and dispersal are commonly estimated with acoustic telemetry (AT) to help inform management and conservation. These behaviors can change with age, habitat and environmental conditions and our ability to accurately estimate them is affected by a study's inference power (design components that affect how accurately detection data represents a species' movements). Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) have been extensively studied with AT over a range of time periods and regions, although primarily at artificial reefs (AR). Here, we use large (> 12 km2) acoustic positioning

Global impact of ciguatoxins and ciguatera fish poisoning on fish, fisheries and consumers.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is one of the most devastating food-borne illnesses caused by fish consumption. Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are potent neurotoxins synthesized by the benthic microalgae Gambierdiscus spp. and Fukuyoa spp. that are transmitted to fish by grazing and predation. Despite the high incidence of CFP, affecting an estimated number of 50,000 persons per year in tropical and subtropical latitudes, the factors underlying CTXs occurrence are still not well understood. Toxin transfer and dynamics in fish and food-webs are complex. Feeding habits and metabolic pathways determine the to

Biological processes in seagrass beds of coastal lagoons to maintain estuary-dependent marine fisheries.

Following the planned FAO Ecosystem Restoration Programme for estuarine habitats to support estuarine fisheries and early life stages of estuary-dependent marine fish, direct relationships of total seagrass and eelgrass Zostera m. capricorni areas and biomass with fish harvest were derived for a range of slightly to highly urbanized coastal lagoons that are expected to support the larvae and juveniles of estuary-dependent marine fisheries. Fish harvest and seagrass area and biomass in the lagoons increased with moderate catchment total suspended sediment and total phosphorus loads due to lagoo
