Ultra-black Camouflage in Deep-Sea Fishes.

At oceanic depths >200 m, there is little ambient sunlight, but bioluminescent organisms provide another light source that can reveal animals to visual predators and prey [1-4]. Transparency and mirrored surfaces-common camouflage strategies under the diffuse solar illumination of shallower waters-are conspicuous when illuminated by directed bioluminescent sources due to reflection from the body surface [5, 6]. Pigmentation allows animals to absorb light from bioluminescent sources, rendering them visually undetectable against the dark background of the deep sea [5]. We present evidence sugges

Development of Vaccines Against Nocardiosis in Fishes.

Nocardiosis, one of the most systemic and devastating diseases, is currently emerging as an important disease of cultured marine and freshwater fishes. The causative agent of this disease is Nocardia seriolae, a Gram-positive acid-fast bacterium. An effective vaccine/vaccination strategy against this pathogen is necessary to control the significant loss in aquaculture practices. In this chapter, we present the vaccination/immunization protocol in fish against both live (sublethal) and inactivated form of N. seriolae using ginbuna crucian carp (Carassius auratus langsdorfii) as a model. N. seri

The shortened spinal cord in tetraodontiform fishes.

In teleosts, the spinal cord generally extends along the entire vertebral canal. The Tetraodontiformes, in which the spinal cord is greatly reduced in length with a distinct long filum terminale and cauda equina, have been regarded as an aberration. The aims of this study are: 1) to elucidate whether the spinal cord in all tetraodontiform fishes shorten with the filum terminale, and 2) to describe the gross anatomical and histological differences in the spinal cord among all families of the Tetraodontiformes. Representative species from all families of the Tetraodontiformes, and for comparison

Physical origins of speed control in swimming fishes.

The linear relationship between tail-beat frequency and swimming speed in fish, first described by Bainbridge in 1958, has since been confirmed in species as disparate as eels and tuna. Dimensional scaling has explained why linearity should emerge at high Reynolds numbers, but the frequency-speed relationship itself has remained empirical, with no physical framework describing its behavior across swimming regimes, and no account of what sets the two quantities that define it: the distance covered per tail beat and the frequency below which forward motion supposedly ceases. Here, we derive a re

Comparative Repeatomics Uncovers Genome Diversification in Gasteropelecidae Fishes.

Repetitive DNA contributes to genome and chromosome evolution, yet its diversification remains poorly characterized by Neotropical fishes. Gasteropelecidae provides an informative system because its three genera share an ancient ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system despite lineage-specific W chromosome differentiation. Here, we characterized and compared the repeatomes of three Gasteropelecidae species to investigate how repetitive DNA diversification relates to genome and chromosome evolution. We analyzed Carnegiella strigata, Gasteropelecus levis, and Thoracocharax stellatus, with Triportheus auritus

Two-dimensional otolith size trends in myctophid fishes.

Lanternfishes are a key food source for marine and terrestrial predators, and play an important role in energy transfer between surface waters and deeper layers. This study investigates otolith size variation in 105 myctophid species included in the AFORO database. The study covers the five Myctophidae subfamilies: Diaphinae, Gymnoscopelinae, Lampanyctinae, Myctophinae and Notolychninae. Several measurements were taken from the otoliths, and relative shape and sizes indices were calculated for the different fishes. Morphometric analyses revealed that Diaphinae and Gymnoscopelinae possess the l

Checklist of coastal fishes from Cabo Verde Archipelago.

BACKGROUND: Taxonomic and geographic misattributions in biodiversity inventories remain a pressing issue in biogeographical research, particularly in regions with overlapping or similar place names. The Republic of Cabo Verde (also known as Cabo Verde Islands) and the Cape Verde Peninsula (Senegal) exemplify this challenge, where historical and recent studies have struggled to provide accurate species distributions due to unverified, erroneous and ambiguous records. This underscores the necessity of comprehensive, reliable datasets to delineate species occurrences across these distinct geograp

A mechanical perspective on suction feeding in fishes.

Suction feeding in fish has long fascinated experimental biologists because of its complex motions, intricate anatomy and vast distribution across thousands of species and nearly every aquatic habitat. Suction feeding poses three main mechanical challenges for fish. First, how do shortening muscles create three-dimensional (3D) expansion of the mouth cavity to suck in water? Second, how do muscles produce the substantial power required for fast and forceful expansion to accelerate food and water into the mouth? Third, how is water moved through the mouth so that food can be deposited in the oe

Evolutionary and ecological correlates of thiaminase in fishes.

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is required by all living organisms in multiple metabolic pathways. It is scarce in natural systems, and deficiency can lead to reproductive failure, neurological issues, and death. One major cause of thiamine deficiency is an overreliance on diet items containing the enzyme thiaminase. Thiaminase activity has been noted in many prey fishes and linked to cohort failure in salmonid predators that eat prey fish with thiaminase activity, yet it is generally unknown whether evolutionary history, fish traits, and/or environmental conditions lead to production of thiaminase. We

Microplastics contamination have been extensively reported in aquatic ecosystem and organisms. It is wildly acknowledged that the ingestion, accumulation and elimination of microplastics in fishes are species-specific, which mainly depending on the feeding behavior. Largemouth bass (carnivorous fish), grass carp (herbivorous fish) and Jian carp (omnivorous fish) were used as organism model. The contributing concentration and size of micr

Effects of common antiepileptic drugs on teleost fishes.

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are globally prescribed to treat epilepsy and many other psychiatric disorders in humans. Their high consumption, low metabolic rate in the human body and low efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in eliminating these chemicals results in the frequent occurrence of these pharmaceutical drugs in aquatic systems. Therefore, aquatic organisms, including ecologically and economically important teleost fishes, may be inadvertently exposed to these chemicals. Due to their physiological similarity with humans, fishes may be particularly vulnerable to AEDs. Almos

An examination of the Devonian fishes of Michigan.

Thyroid surgery once referred to as "horrid butchery" due to its high risk and complexity, has transformed dramatically over the centuries. Advances in surgical techniques, along with improvements in hemostasis and nerve identification technologies, have significantly reduced the mortality associated with thyroidectomy. The advent of intraoperative nerve monitoring and visual identification using reliable anatomical landmarks has made the identification and preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve almost routine. However, despite these advancements, the intricate design, variable anatomy,

Evolution of Venomous Cartilaginous and Ray-Finned Fishes.

Venom and its associated delivery systems have evolved in numerous animal groups ranging from jellyfishes to spiders, lizards, shrews, and the male platypus. Building off new data and previously published anatomical and molecular studies, we explore the evolution of and variation within venomous fishes. We show the results of the first multi-locus, ordinal-level phylogenetic analysis of cartilaginous (Chondrichthyes) and ray-finned (Actinopterygii) fishes that hypothesizes 18 independent evolutions of this specialization. Ancestral-states reconstruction indicates that among the 2386-2962 extan

Cryptobiosis and its control in North American fishes.

Cryptobiosis is caused by the haemoflagellates Cryptobia bullocki and Cryptobia salmositica. These parasites infect food fishes (e.g. flounders, salmon) on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America and clinical signs of the disease include anaemia, and abdominal distention with ascites. The virulent factor in salmonid cryptobiosis, caused by C. salmositica, is a secretory metalloprotease (200 kDa). Fish mortality may be up to 100% in the absence of treatment, consequently strategies have been developed to protect them from disease/mortality. A single dose of a live vaccine protects

Detection of infrasound and linear acceleration in fishes.

Fishes have an acute sensitivity to extremely low-frequency linear acceleration, or infrasound, even down to below 1 Hz. The otolith organs are the sensory system responsible for this ability. The hydrodynamic noise generated by swimming fishes is mainly in the infrasound range, and may be important in courtship and prey predator interactions. Intense infrasound has a deterring effect on some species, and has a potential in acoustic barriers. We hypothesize that the pattern of ambient infrasound in the oceans may be used for orientation in migratory fishes, and that pelagic fishes may detect c

Optic tectum in congenitally monophthalmic fishes and chicks.

Morphometry of optic tectum layers was performed in fishes and birds that were congenitally monophthalmic (or had one very small or malformed eye). The optic chiasm was studied with regard to possible anomalies of the fiber distribution. In two very young fish larvae with only one ocular rudiment, no differences were found between the two tecta. In fishes and chicks with one normal and one eye of reduced size, the volume of superficial tectal layers contralateral to the small eye was significantly more affected (reduction by 40 to 70%) than that of the deep layers (reduction by 10 to 30%). [Extra-bulbar primary olfactory projection in teleost fishes].

Immunohistochemical investigations with anti-substance P antiserum demonstrate the existence of an extensive extrabulbar primary olfactory projection in several gymnotid teleost fish. This projection, never described before, originates in particular primary olfactory bundles which enter with the olfactory nerve into the olfactory bulb. While the bulk of the olfactory fibers end with glomeruli in the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb, two particular bundles penetrate into the telencephalon and end, without forming glomeruli, in several telencephalic and diencephalic regions. The gobioid fishes of India-An annotated list.

The gobioid fishes of India have been misidentified and misunderstood for many years; there are over 250 nominal species recorded so far, plus many for which we were unable to confirm identity or presence in India. A look at much of the Indian literature on these fishes shows a confusion of names, with some species being endemic, some species widespread, and many misidentified. The taxonomy of many Indo-Pacific gobioid genera and species is still not understood. The rise of social media and citizen science is assisting in documenting these fishes, but much work remains to be done. Increased co
