Infection of recurrent calcaneal ulcer caused by a biofilm-producer Myroides odoratimimus strain.

We report a case of recurrent post-traumatic ulcer infection due to Myroides odoratimimus in an immunocompromised male. We have also reviewed the medical literature on isolated M. odoratimimus infections. The strain, isolated from ulcer discharge, was multidrug-resistant and treatment with meropenem, based on susceptibility testing, led to resolution of infection. The strain was also able to form a relevant amount of biofilm over time, thus suggesting a possible role of sessile communities in the chronicization of infection. To our knowledge, this is the first description of recurrent ulcer in

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica: An Uncommon Cause of Peritonitis In Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Peritonitis is a major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and due to its gravity, it remains the primary reason to switch from PD to hemodialysis. Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, a non-fermentative Gram-negative bacillus, is rarely encountered as a pathogen causing peritonitis in adults. We present here a case report of an acquired infection with this organism in adult on PD. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of infection with this organism in a continuous ambulatory PD patient in Tunisia.

Identification of novel tetracycline resistance gene tet(X14) and its co-occurrence with tet(X2) in a tigecycline-resistant and colistin-resistant Empedobacter stercoris.

Tigecycline is one of the last-resort antibiotics to treat severe infections. Recently, tigecycline resistance has sporadically emerged with an increasing trend, and Tet(X) family represents a new resistance mechanism of tigecycline. In this study, a novel chromosome-encoded tigecycline resistance gene, tet(X14), was identified in a tigecycline-resistant and colistin-resistant Empedobacter stercoris strain ES183 recovered from a pig fecal sample in China. Tet(X14) shows 67.14-96.39% sequence identity to the other variants [Tet(X) to Tet(X13)]. Overexpression of Tet(X14) in Escherichia coli con

Synergistic pathogenicity of Elizabethkingia miricola and Klebsiella pneumoniae in black-spotted frogs and the prophylactic efficacy of a novel herbal composite.

The black-spotted frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus) is an ecologically and commercially important aquaculture species in China. However, intensive farming has escalated its vulnerability to diseases, particularly meningitis (torticollis-cataract syndrome). In August 2023, a severe disease outbreak characterized by neurological symptoms occurred on a frog farm in Huanggang (Hubei Province, China; 30.45° N, 114.08° E). In this study, Elizabethkingia miricola and Klebsiella pneumoniae were identified as co-pathogens from the kidney tissues of moribund frogs. Taxonomic confirmation and virulence ch

Neonatal Elizabethkingia anophelis meningitis originating from the water reservoir of an automated infant milk dispenser, the Netherlands, February 2024.

Elizabethkingia anophelis is a multidrug-resistant pathogen causing high mortality and morbidity in adults with comorbidities and neonates. We report a Dutch case of E. anophelis meningitis in a neonate, clonally related to samples taken from an automated infant milk dispenser located at the family's residence. We inform about the emergence of E. anophelis and suggest molecular surveillance in hospitals and other health settings. This is the first case connecting an automated formula dispenser to an invasive infection in a neonate.

Outbreaks of Elizabethkingia miricola Caused Fatal Meningitis-Like Disease in Cultured Bullfrogs.

Elizabethkingia miricola is an emerging nosocomial pathogen responsible for meningitis, sepsis, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, and joint infection in humans. These pathogens were also reported to be causal agents for meningitis-like disease in cultured frogs, which displayed high infectivity, mortality, and significant loss. In July 2023, 10 outbreaks of infectious meningitis-like disease in bullfrogs occurred in Tangshan area. To determine the causal agent, 70 diseased frogs from 10 farms were collected for etiological identification. Gram-negative bacilli were isolated from the brain an

Elizabethkingia anophelis: An Important Emerging Cause of Neonatal Sepsis and Meningitis in China.

Elizabethkingia anophelis, originally isolated from the midgut of Anopheles gambiae in 2011, is an important cause of sepsis in adults and children and meningitis in newborns, with several reported outbreaks worldwide. Accumulating molecular biological and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) evidence suggests that E. anophelis is the major human pathogen belonging to the genus Elizabethkingia. The source of infection, routes of transmission and pathogenicity of E. anophelis are unclear and should be better understood as the bacterium is capable of causing sepsis and meningitis in newborns, with comp

Unveiling the skin microbial guardians and assailants in psoriasis subtypes: a Mendelian randomization study.

Previous studies have shown an association between skin microbiota and psoriasis, but the causal relationship between skin microbiota and different psoriasis subtypes remains unexplored. Our study employed the Mendelian randomization (MR) method, using summary statistics from Genome-Wide Association Studies, to investigate the causal relationships between skin microbiota and different subtypes of psoriasis. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method served as the primary method in our MR study. The MR-Egger intercept test, Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO test, and leave-one-out analysis were condu

Development of a novel PCR assay specific for Riemerella anatipestifer.

AIMS: Riemerella anatipestifer is a significant pathogen of waterfowl and turkeys. Due to their similar ecology and morphological and cultural characteristics it is important to differentiate R. anatipestifer infections from those caused by Pasteurella multocida. Present study describes a novel PCR assay that is capable of rapid and species-specific identification of R. anatipestifer from bacterial cultures. METHODS AND RESULTS: An ERIC (enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus)-PCR fragment common to all tested isolates was used as a target for primer design. After optimization, the a
