Socio-ecological risk factors associated with human flea infestations of rural household in plague-endemic areas of Madagascar.

Plague is a flea-borne fatal disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which persists in rural Madagascar. Although fleas parasitizing rats are considered the primary vectors of Y. pestis, the human flea, Pulex irritans, is abundant in human habitations in Madagascar, and has been found naturally infected by the plague bacterium during outbreaks. While P. irritans may therefore play a role in plague transmission if present in plague endemic areas, the factors associated with infestation and human exposure within such regions are little explored. To determine the socio-ecological risk fa

Scurvy, Starvation, and Flea Infestation - A Case Report From 21st Century Europe.

Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, historically associated with long sea voyages, periods of famine and war. Currently, it is often misdiagnosed and underreported, as physicians tend to consider it a disease of the past. We present the case of a 79-year-old female who was admitted to the Emergency Department complaining of pruritus. The patient lived alone and in poor hygiene conditions. Diet was scarce. One week before admission she was in contact with flea-ridden stray dogs. Sometime later she noted several fleas and multiple pruritic small papules, crusts, and excoriations

Prevalence of flea infestation in dogs and cats in Hungary combined with a survey of owner awareness.

A survey was conducted in order to gain current information on flea species (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infesting dogs and cats living in urban and rural areas of Hungary, along with data on the factors that affect the presence, distribution and seasonality of infestation. In addition, owner awareness of flea infestation was evaluated. Practitioners in 13 veterinary clinics were asked to examine all dogs and cats attending the clinic and to collect fleas, when present, on 2 days in each month from December 2005 to November 2006. They also completed a questionnaire for each animal examined. A tot

Fatal anemia and dermatitis in captive agoutis (Dasyprocta mexicana) infested with Echidnophaga fleas.

Two captive agoutis (Dasyprocta mexicana) died of anemia with centrilobular hepatocellular necrosis (2/2), severe flea ectoparasitism (2/2), and cardiomegaly attributed to anemia (1/2). Other agoutis were similarly parasitized and one had anemia. Fleas were manually removed and all agoutis treated topically with propoxur and selamectin and moved to another enclosure. No additional cases of fatal anemia were seen. Cutaneous lesions suggestive of hypersensitivity were observed in three additional agoutis with dorsal alopecia (3/3), a penetrating wound associated with pruritus and self-mutilation

Sticktight flea (Echidnophaga gallinacea) infestation in a Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria).

A 12-yr-old female Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria), acquired from a private aviculturalist, was diagnosed with a flea infestation during a quarantine examination. The fleas were embedded around the face and throat and were identified as sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea). Despite the sticktight fleas' worldwide distribution and broad host range, there is a paucity of reports on flea infestations and their treatment in zoo and exotic pet birds. Although this parasite has the potential to induce morbidity and mortality, no feather loss, localized dermatitis, or anemia was noted

Seroprevalence of Bartonella henselae in cattery cats: association with cattery hygiene and flea infestation.

We attempted to determine what factors were common to catteries with high Bartonella henselae antibody prevalence compared with catteries with low prevalence, in order to contribute to better guidelines for the choice of a safe pet cat. The overall seroprevalence in 11 catteries from diverse geographical locations in North America in the present study was 35.8%. There was evidence of B. henselae exposure in all 11 homes tested, with 5 catteries being heavily infected. The distribution of B. henselae exposure was bimodal in catteries: either most or all cats in the home had been exposed, or ver

Influence of photoperiod on egg production of cat fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infesting cats.

Photoperiod affected the production of cat flea eggs by cats infested with cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché). Cat flea eggs have a smooth chorion and do not adhere to the host. About 60% of fluorescing eggs placed in the pelage were recovered in collecting trays underneath the host in 2 h. An average of 87.7 eggs per cat was laid during the last 8 h of the scotophase compared with 49.9 and 59.1 eggs during the other 8-h periods. Significant variation in the number of eggs collected daily existed among the six cats. The activity budgets were similar for all the cats with the maximum slee

A randomized, blinded, controlled USA field study to assess the use of fluralaner tablets in controlling canine flea infestations.

BACKGROUND: The novel isoxazoline molecule fluralaner provides 12 weeks activity against fleas and 8 to 12 weeks against tick infestations according to label claims. METHODS: This blinded, multi-center study in client-owned dogs evaluated the flea control provided by a single oral fluralaner treatment (25-56 mg/kg; Bravecto™, Merck Animal Health) compared to a control group administered three oral spinosad (30 - 60 mg/kg; Comfortis®, Elanco) treatments at 4-week intervals together with an amitraz collar (9%, Preventic®, Virbac). Households were randomized (3:1 ratio) to either fluralaner (224

RNA virome of ticks and fleas infesting Marmota himalayana from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and fleas are important vectors and hosts for various emergent human pathogens, such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. In the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China, Marmota himalayana (marmots) serves as the primary reservoir for Yersinia pestis, primarily transmitted by fleas. Due to their wide distribution and large population, marmots serve as important host animals for ticks and fleas to survive and reproduce on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, the spectrum of RNA viruses found in ti

Host traits shape flea infestation patterns in small mammals: a case study of Spermophilus undulatus and associated flea species in northern Xinjiang, China.

OBJECTIVE: Fleas are obligate ectoparasites of mammals and play an important role in the transmission of zoonotic pathogens, including Yersinia pestis. Describing empirical patterns of flea infestation across host communities is essential for understanding host-parasite associations in plague-endemic regions. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between fleas and their host animals by examining how host traits influence flea parasitism, with the goal of offering novel insights for future plague prevention strategies and related research. METHODS: From 2022 to 2025, small m

A plant-based repellent protects against Tunga penetrans infestation and sand flea disease.

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease prevalent in impoverished populations in the tropics and associated with considerable morbidity. Treatment options are limited and prophylaxis has never been attempted. We assessed the effectiveness of a plant-based repellent to prevent infestation with Tunga penetrans and sand flea disease in an urban squatter settlement in Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil. Two cohorts were formed. One cohort started with the intervention while another served as control. The plant-based repellent Zanzarin was applied twice daily on the skin of the feet. After 4 weeks and a was

First molecular detection and characterization of zoonotic Bartonella species in fleas infesting domestic animals in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: Bartonellosis is an emerging vector-borne disease caused by different intracellular bacteria of the genus Bartonella (Rhizobiales: Bartonellaceae) that is transmitted primarily by blood-sucking arthropods such as sandflies, ticks and fleas. In Tunisia, there are no data available identifying the vectors of Bartonella spp. In our research, we used molecular methods to detect and characterize Bartonella species circulating in fleas collected from domestic animals in several of the country's bioclimatic areas. RESULTS: A total of 2178 fleas were collected from 5 cats, 27 dogs, 34 she

Effects of Different Levels of Flea Infestation on Gut Microbiota of Brandt's Voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) in China.

Brandt's vole is a common small rodent, and its gut microbiota is critical to host health and immune function. The parasitic fleas commonly found in Brandt's voles cause an immune response, but their impact on the gut microbiota remains unclear. According to the level of flea infestation, Brandt's voles were divided into the control group, low-infestation group, and high-infestation group. The changes in the microbial community composition, abundance, and diversity of the gut microbiota were evaluated using 16S rRNA sequencing. Flea infestation significantly affected body weight, food intake,

Prophylaxis Against Heartworm Infection and Flea or Tick Infestation in Dogs: Single Agents and Combination-Drug Products.

From ancient times to the present, parasites and the diseases they transmit have jeopardized the health and wellbeing of working and companion canines worldwide. Many common pests that afflict dogs can be classified as ectoparasites (e.g., fleas, ticks, lice), which serve as vectors of pathogens transmitted as the organism feeds or defecates; or endoparasites (e. g, helminths, protozoa), which can cause slowly progressive subclinical canine diseases as well as acute illnesses associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Safe, effective antiparasitic prophylaxis in dogs remains a topic o
