Dynamics of morphological changes of the rat adrenals was investigated on the first day and 25--27 days after a prolonged exposure to weightlessness. Analysing the general histological picture of the adrenal cortex during the first hours of the flight (presence of a subglomerular sudanophilic layer and distinct zones in other cortical parts), it is possible to conclude that by the completion of the flight the cortical substance has reached a definite degree of normalization, hence the animals have adopted to the flight conditions. Morphological signs of elevated functional cortical activity 9-

The effect of space flight in a National Aeronautics and Space Administration shuttle was studied in pregnant rats. Rats were launched on day 11 of gestation and recovered on day 20 of gestation. Pregnancy was allowed to proceed to term and rats delivered vaginally on days 22-23, although flight animals required more labour contractions to complete the delivery process. Pups were placed with foster dams and connexin 26 and 43 were examined in the uterus of flight animals approximately 3 h after delivery. Space flight did not affect uterine connexin 26, localized primarily in epithelial cells o

Animal size affects the energetics of locomotion. Using female caste dimorphism in bumblebees, we assessed how body mass impacts morphological and physiological traits linked with flight. The allometric relationships obtained for wing surface area, wingbeat frequency, and flight and resting metabolic rates of workers could predict the trait values of queens that were more than fourfold larger. Flight success of queens decreased over time in part because of a large increase in body mass and a decrease in traits linked with flight, namely wingbeat frequency and metabolic rate, and the activity o

Exposure to microgravity induces cardiovascular deconditioning characterized by orthostatic hypotension when astronauts return to the earth. In order to understand the mechanism of cardiovascular deconditioning, it is necessary to clarify the changes in hemodynamics and the cardiovascular regulation system over the period of space flight. The telemetry system applied to freely moving animals will be a useful and appropriate technique for this kind of long term study of the cardiovascular system in the conscious animal during space flight. The purpose of the present study is twofold: firstly, t

The digestive organs are highly sensitive to the influence of orbital flight factors and can limit the professional activities of crew members aboard the International Space Station. Connective tissue, as a system-forming matrix of the integrative-buffer metabolic environment, is of particular relevance in space biomedicine, ensuring the functioning of internal organs under an altered gravitational stimulus. However, the adaptive mechanisms of the fibrous extracellular matrix of the gastric and intestinal connective tissue have not been fully investigated under prolonged microgravity weightles

1. The nosological status of panic disorder is still a matter of debate. Nevertheless, evidence is emerging that panic attacks have a different pattern of drug responsiveness from other forms of anxiety. 2. Several experimental animal models of panic attacks have been developed. These vary in the extent to which they meet criteria for face validity, predictive validity and construct validity, normally applied to such models. 3. In the present review, the authors examine the possibility that predator-elicited flight responses in Swiss-Webster mice might serve as an experimental model for the sc

Experiments are described in which the development of the gravity-sensing organs was studied in newt larvae reared in microgravity on the IML-2 mission and in Aplysia embryos and larvae reared on a centrifuge at 1 to 5 g. In Aplysia embryos, the statolith (single dense mass on which gravity and linear acceleration act) was reduced in size in a graded fashion at increasing g. In early post-metamorphic Aplysia or even in isolated statocysts from such animals, the number of statoconia produced is reduced at high g. Newt larvae launched before any of the otoconia were formed and reared for 15 days

Migration is an awe-inspiring behavior employed by a diverse suite of taxa throughout the animal kingdom. Avian migration is arguably the most well-known animal behavior and birds vary widely in how far they migrate, but the ecological mechanisms underlying interspecific variation in migration distance remain unclear. We developed a novel set of predictions deduced from seven mechanistic hypotheses proposed to explain interspecific variation in avian migration distance. We then used a Bayesian phylogenetic comparative analysis to test predictions from these seven hypotheses based on migration

On August 5, 2011, a bat flew through the cabin of a commercial airliner minutes after takeoff during an early morning flight from Wisconsin to Georgia, potentially exposing the passengers and flight crew to rabies virus. Three days later, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH) requested assistance from CDC to conduct a rabies risk assessment for the passengers, flight crew, and ground crew members associated with the flight. No one was determined to have been exposed to rabies virus based on Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices guidelines for rabies prevention. An environmenta

By light and electron microscopy long tubular bones of white Wistar rats were examined after a 22-day space flight and ground-based synhcroneous experiment. Approximately half of the flight rats showed loosened spongiose of metaphyses which was normally combined with a reduced area of the primary spongiose near the cartilaginous growth plate. This was suggestive of inhibited growth of bones in-flight. The light and electron microscopic examination of bones of flight rats revealed wide osteocyte cavities (lacunae) that could be associated with perilacunar osteolysis. The study of synchroneous a

BACKGROUND: In-flight conditions are hypothesized to influence the timing and success of long-distance migration. Wind assistance and thermal uplift are thought to reduce the energetic costs of flight, humidity, air pressure and temperature may affect the migrants' water balance, and clouds may impede navigation. Recent advances in animal-borne long-distance tracking enable evaluating the importance of these factors in determining animals' flight altitude.
METHODS: Here we determine the effects of wind, humidity, temperature, cloud cover, and altitude (as proxy for climbing costs and air pres

Pregnant rats were flown on a NASA space shuttle during days 11-20 of gestation and the effects of pregnancy maintenance and uterine myometrial smooth muscle were evaluated. There was no effect of space flight on fetal mass in rats examined at recovery on day 20 of gestation (G-20). Rats allowed to go to term delivered vaginally at days 22-23, but space flight significantly decreased pup mass at birth. Space flight did not alter myometrial smooth muscle volume at G-20 and postpartum when compared to flight delayed synchronous controls, but flight animals showed a 37% decrease in myometrial smo

Manduca sexta are endothermic insects, requiring adult thorax temperatures to be elevated above 35 °C for flight muscles to produce the wing beat frequencies necessary for flight. During flight, these animals rely on aerobic production of ATP by flight muscle mitochondria with several potential metabolic pathways providing the fuel. Along with typical carbohydrate substrates, mitochondria of other endothermic insects including bumblebees and wasps can use the amino acid proline or glycerol 3-phosphate (G3P) as metabolic fuel for prewarm up and flight. Here we examine flight muscle mitochondria

Sex differences in metabolic responses of animals performing natural behaviours remain poorly understood, particularly under free-living conditions. Here, we examined how locomotor effort relates to mitochondrial metabolism in red blood cells in homing pigeons (Columba livia) by combining biologging of flight behaviour with measurements of mitochondrial respiration taken before and immediately after flight. Birds were equipped with global positioning system (GPS) loggers and tri-axial accelerometers, and movement effort was quantified using vectorial dynamic body acceleration (VeDBA). Flight w

Animals rely on multimodal sensory integration for proper orientation within their environment. For example, odour-guided behaviours often require appropriate integration of concurrent visual cues. To gain a further understanding of mechanisms underlying sensory integration in odour-guided behaviour, our study examined the effects of visual stimuli induced by self-motion and object-motion on odour-guided flight in male M. sexta. By placing stationary objects (pillars) on either side of a female pheromone plume, moths produced self-induced visual motion during odour-guided flight. These flights

The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for flight speed and its association with growth traits in Nellore beef cattle. The flight speed (FS) of 7,402 yearling animals was measured, using a device composed of a pair of photoelectric cells. Time interval data (s) were converted to speed (m/s) and faster animals were regarded as more reactive. The growth traits analyzed were weaning weight (WW), ADG from weaning to yearling age, and yearling scrotal circumference (SC). The (co)variance components were estimated using REML in a multitrait analysis applying an animal model.

While long-term fixation and storage of specimens is common and useful for many research projects, it is particularly important for space flight investigations where samples may not be returned to Earth for several months (International Space Station) or years (manned mission to Mars). We examined two critical challenges of space flight experimentation: the effect of long-term fixation on the quality of mouse bone preservation and the preservation of antigens and enzymes for both histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses, and how the animal/sample processing affects the preservation. We s

Elevated cancer risk and compromised reproductive health have been well documented in flight attendants (FA), but the etiology remains unknown. Many studies using cell and animal models suggest that air travel related exposures might plausibly explain the adverse health outcomes observed in flight crew, but our understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms is incomplete. During air travel, FA are constantly exposed to complex mixtures of mutagens in the flight cabin that may contribute to genomic instability by inducing DNA damage and interfering with DNA repair. Defects in DNA repair

The microgravity environment of spaceflight produces rapid cardiovascular changes which are adaptive and appropriate in that setting, but are associated with significant deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension on return to Earth's gravity. The rapidity with which these space flight induced changes appear and disappear provides an ideal model for studying the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension, regardless of etiology. Since significant deconditioning is seen after flights of very short duration, muscle atrophy due to inactivity plays, at mo
