Fragment Edges Benefit a Common Predator of Pollinators via Bottom-Up Effects.

Defaunation following habitat fragmentation typically threatens predators at higher trophic levels, which further alter prey and plants via top-down effects. However, few studies test if fragmented habitats (e.g., forest edges) support predators through bottom-up effects. Here, we tested the effects of habitat fragmentation on multi-trophic interactions involving flowering plants, pollinators, and a common predatory spider (Atypus heterothecus). We found that spider biomass was higher at the edges of large islands than in their interiors, with no significant effect of island area or isolation.

Variety-Specific Flowering of Sugarcane Induced by the Smut Fungus Sporisorium scitamineum.

Sugarcane smut is the most severe sugarcane disease in China. The typical symptom is the emerging of a long, black whip from the top of the plant cane. However, in 2018, for the first time we observed the floral structures of sugarcane infected by smut fungus in the planting fields of China. Such smut-associated inflorescence in sugarcane was generally curved and short, with small black whips emerging from glumes of a single floret on the cane stalk. Compatible haploid strains, named Ssf1-7 (MAT-1) and Ssf1-8 (MAT-2), isolated from teliospores that formed black whips in inflorescence of sugarc

Effects of nitrogen top-dressing treatments and development stages on morphological, colorimetric and biochemical characteristics of fresh bean pods (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Nitrogen management and harvest timing are critical determinants of fresh bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) pod quality; however, their combined effects on morphological, colorimetric and biochemical characteristics during pod development remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the effects of four nitrogen top-dressing fertilizers (ammonium sulfate [AS], slow-release fertilizer [SRF], nitropower [NP], and urea) and five pod development stages (BBCH 72-81) on pod morphology, color parameters, antioxidant capacity, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and protein content under field cond

In vitro Anti-Trichomonas vaginalis Activity of Cyprus Endemic Plant Origanum majorana Essential Oil and Synergistic Effect with Metronidazole.

Currently, the treatment of Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) typically involves the use of 5-nitroimidazoles (such as metronidazole and tinidazole). However, an increasing failure in treatment is observed due to resistance developed to these drugs. For this reason, alternative drugs have been investigated, especially by using natural products. In our study, the anti-T. vaginalis activity of the Origanum majorana essential oil (OMEO), which is a Cyprus endemic plant, and its synergistic effect with metronidazole were investigated. The essential oil was extracted through hydrodistillation of

Post-hoc permutation GWAS refinement reveals robust marker-trait associations in faba bean.

INTRODUCTION: Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is a high-yielding, protein-rich grain legume with considerable potential for sustainable cropping systems. However, its genetic improvement has been constrained by a large, complex genome and historically limited genomic resources. We aimed to identify agronomically relevant QTLs in a diverse faba bean panel using genome-wide associations studies (GWAS) with rigorous control of false positives due to model violations. METHODS: The NORFAB faba bean diversity panel was evaluated for agronomic traits over four years (2018-2021) at two locations in Denmark

Myosotis scorpioides L. (Boraginaceae) floral nectary: Micromorphology, fluorescence, and ultrastructure.

The small flowers of Myosotis scorpioides are pollinated by various groups of insects feeding on their nectar accumulating at the base of the corolla tube. To date, only few studies have focused on the anatomy and ultrastructure of nectaries in plants from the family Boraginaceae. The aim of this study was to analyse the structure of the M. scorpioides nectary at different levels of organisation, with special emphasis on its ultrastructure, which has not been investigated so far. The studies were carried out with the use of light, fluorescence, scanning electron, and transmission electron micr

Repatterning of the inflorescence meristem in Gerbera hybrida after wounding.

The Asteraceae plant family is characterized by inflorescences, called flower heads or capitula that may combine hundreds of individual florets into a single flower-like structure. The florets are arranged in a regular phyllotactic pattern with Fibonacci numbers of left- and right-winding spirals. Such a pattern may be disrupted due to physical constraints or by wounding occurring during the early meristem development. Recovery from wounding re-establishes patterning although the mechanisms have remained elusive. In this study, we applied Gerbera hybrida as a model system and established metho

Single and combined exposure to 'bee safe' pesticides alter behaviour and offspring production in a ground-nesting solitary bee (Xenoglossa pruinosa).

Mounting evidence supporting the negative impacts of exposure to neonicotinoids on bees has prompted the registration of novel 'bee-friendly' insecticides for agricultural use. Flupyradifurone (FPF) is a butenolide insecticide that shares the same mode of action as neonicotinoids and has been assessed to be 'practically non-toxic to adult honeybees' using current risk assessment procedures. However, these assessments overlook some routes of exposure specific to wild bees, such as contact with residues in soil for ground-nesters. Co-exposure with other pesticides may also lead to detrimental sy

Marangoni-driven flower-like patterning of an evaporating drop spreading on a liquid substrate.

Drop motility at liquid surfaces is attracting growing interest because of its potential applications in microfluidics and artificial cell design. Here we report the unique highly ordered pattern that sets in when a millimeter-size drop of dichloromethane spreads on an aqueous substrate under the influence of surface tension, both phases containing a surfactant. Evaporation induces a Marangoni flow that forces the development of a marked rim at the periphery of the spreading film. At some point this rim breaks up, giving rise to a ring of droplets, which modifies the aqueous phase properties i

Correlation between the chemical composition and the antimicrobial properties of seven samples of essential oils of endemic Thymes in Morocco against multi-resistant bacteria and pathogenic fungi.

Thymus vulgaris, Thymus satureioides, and Thymus zygis are endemic Moroccan species that are intensively used due to their extensive medications and culinary properties. To enhance and preserve these overexploited species, the effect of provenance on the chemical composition of essential oils and antimicrobial activity against human pathogens were studied. Essential oils (EO) obtained by hydrodistillation from the flowering tops of thyme species were analyzed by GC-SM. The determination of minimum inhibitory (MIC), bactericidal (MBC), and fungicide (MFC) concentrations of EO were studied by mi

Use of quantitative flow cytometry to measure ex vivo immunostimulant activity of echinacea: the case for polysaccharides.

INTRODUCTION: When directly exposed to various echinacea fractions, human leukocytes ex vivo are strongly stimulated to proliferate and to produce immunostimulation and inflammatory cytokines. A comparison of fractions containing lipoidal small molecules and high-molecular-weight water-soluble polysaccharides indicates that the latter are substantially more potent as immunostimulants. Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, E. angustifolia DC, and E. pallida (Nutt.), Nutt. extracts, and each plant part contain significantly potent constituents. Flow cytometric techniques were utilized.
