Focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH), or Heck's disease, is a benign proliferative viral infection of the oral mucosa that is related to Human Papil-lomavirus (HPV), mainly subtypes 13 and 32. Although this condition is known to exist in numerous populations and ethnic groups, the reported cases among Caucasians are relatively rare. It presents as asymptomatic papules or nodules on the oral mucosa, gingiva, tongue, and lips. Histopathologically, it is characterized by parakeratosis, epithelial hyperplasia, focal acanthosis, fusion, and horizontal outgrowth of epithelial ridges and the cells name

BACKGROUND: Focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH), also known as Heck's disease, is a rare, benign, contagious condition of the oral mucosa associated primarily with human papillomavirus (HPV) types 13 and 32. It predominantly affects children and adolescents and is often underreported in many regions.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 8-year-old Somali girl who presented with a 3.5-year history of asymptomatic, progressively increasing oral mucosal lesions. Clinical examination revealed multiple soft, flat-topped, verrucous papules involving the lower labial, buccal, lingual mucosa, a

Summary. Background. This report describes the case of a patient with focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH), a rare but distinctive entity of viral aetiology with characteristic clinical and histopathological features. Case report. The condition is usually seen in children and adolescents of American Indian and Eskimo background. Surgical removal of papillomatous lesions is the treatment of choice, either for aesthetic reasons, or when the lesions interfere with function or are readily traumatized. Recurrence and the site of new lesions are unpredictable, and continued review of the patient is of

AIMS: Immature squamous metaplasia of the pancreatic duct (ISMPD) can be difficult to differentiate from an intraductal carcinoma of the pancreas (ICP), and little is known about the pathological nature of ISMPD. The aim of this study was to analyse 20 ISMPD and 10 ICP tissue samples.
METHODS AND RESULTS: ISMPD shares some characteristics with ICP. Seven of 20 ISMPD samples were covered by a layer of pancreatic duct epithelium, whereas this was not seen in the ICP samples. Immunohistochemistry of ISMPD revealed positivity for p63 (100%), cytokeratin 5/6 (95%), cytokeratin 7 (95%), cytokeratin

Focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH), or Heck's disease, is an uncommon benign proliferation of oral mucosa caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly subtypes 13 and 32. The disease typically presents in young Native American patients and is characterized by multiple asymptomatic papules and nodules on the oral mucosa, lips, tongue, and gingiva. The factors that determine susceptibility to FEH are unknown, but the ethnic and geographic distribution of FEH suggests that genetic predisposition, particularly having the human lymphocytic antigen DR4 type, may be involved in pathogenesis

Human papillomavirus infection can cause a variety of benign or malignant oral lesions, and the various genotypes can cause distinct types of lesions. To our best knowledge, there has been no report of 2 different human papillomavirus-related oral lesions in different oral sites in the same patient before. This paper reported a patient with 2 different oral lesions which were clinically and histologically in accord with focal epithelial hyperplasia and oral papilloma, respectively. Using DNA extracted from these 2 different lesions, tissue blocks were tested for presence of human papillomaviru

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are a major cause of oral lesions, and in individuals living with HIV, lesions such as focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH) may persist or exhibit atypical features, potentially progressing to more severe conditions if untreated. Managing oral HPV lesions in immunocompromised patients is challenging, as conventional therapies may carry higher risks or show limited efficacy.
METHODS: This study reports the case of a 49-year-old HIV-positive male with valve disease and arthritis, requiring crutches for mobility. He presented with multiple painless

BACKGROUND: Corneal epithelium remodeling in response to changes in the anterior corneal surface (keratoconus, corneal refractive surgery) is well-documented in the literature. However, several conditions may induce a different behavior of the epithelium, in which focal areas of epithelial thickening induce irregular astigmatism. This case report presents a highly unusual case of irregular astigmatism induced by an epithelial hyperplasia of unknown etiology, which was treated by the mechanical removal of only the epithelium.

We have observed four patients with oral papillomas. Two children had oral mucosal lesions characteristic of focal epithelial hyperplasia, a young man had common, wart-like lesions on his hard palate, and a male immunosuppressed renal allograft recipient had condyloma-like lesions on his gingivae. Papillomavirus-like particles were seen by electron microscopy in lesions from both patients with focal epithelial hyperplasia. No structural antigens for human papillomavirus (HPV) 1, 2, 3, or 5 were found by immunofluorescent microscopy, but further evidence of the presence of a papillomavirus was

BACKGROUND: Multifocal epithelial hyperplasia (MEH), or focal epithelial hypertension (FEH), or Heck's disease, is an uncommon, benign oral mucosal disease associated with human papillomavirus infection. It is mostly observed in indigenous populations of the world, and has been rarely reported in China. However, previous research suggested there might be a greater prevalence of MEH in the Chinese population. While predominantly involves the lips, buccal mucosa and tongue, MEH was occasionally reported to affect the hard palate and gingiva as well.

Transmissible ileal hyperplasia (TIH) was experimentally induced in weanling hamsters, and the development of lesions was characterized. Ileal lesions developed in two phases: a hyperplastic phase which was detected by Day 10 and an inflammatory phase which began by Day 20. Hyperplasia began as focal lengthening of villi with expansion of crypt-type epithelium onto villus walls. Diffuse hyperplasia of distal ileum developed; dilated, tortuous crypts penetrated subjacent supporting tissues; but metastases were not seen. Inflammation began in association with focal or segmental necrosis of crypt

Focal Epithelial Hyperplasia or Multifocal Epithelial Hyperplasia (MEH), also known as Heck's disease, is considered a rare pathology of the oral mucosa associated with human papillomavirus types 13 and 32. For reasons not fully understood, MEH disproportionally affects specific populations of indigenous groups around the world. After the first reports in Native Americans, the epidemiology of the disease has been described in different geographical regions mainly related to particular indigenous populations, the majority of the studies are clinical case reports, but the biological determinants

Multifocal epithelial hyperplasia (MEH) is also known as focal epithelial hyperplasia, Heck's disease or multifocal papillomavirus-induced epithelial hyperplasia. It is characterised by the presence of multiple lesions in the oral mucosa of children and it has been associated with the presence of the human papillomavirus. The aim of this study was to determine the clinico-pathological features of the cases diagnosed as MEH in the Service of Dermatology of the Hospital Manuel Gea González (SDHMGG). The files of the SDHMGG were reviewed and all cases diagnosed as MEH were retrieved. Nine MEH cas

A free-ranging road-killed brown howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) presented multiple mucosal-colored papules and plaques on oral mucosa. Pathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of epithelial hyperplasia with koilocytosis. Papillomavirus antigens were demonstrated by immunohistochemistry, and PCR was positive for partial amplification of Alouatta guariba papillomavirus 1 DNA.

We describe nine cases of a histologically distinct and previously unreported lesion of the major salivary glands. The patients ranged in age from 12 to 63 years and included four males, five females. The lesions were slow-growing masses in the parotid gland (eight cases) and submandibular gland (one case). The clinical impression in each case was a benign salivary gland tumor. Grossly, the lesions were discrete, pale, rubbery nodules embedded within the salivary gland parenchyma. Microscopically, the lesions were unencapsulated, circumscribed masses of sclerotic and hyalinized collagenous tis

The human papillomavirus (HPV) has an affinity for squamous cells of stratified keratinized epithelium, thus affecting the lower genital, nasal, and oral tracts. In the oral cavity, HPV is associated with pathoses such as the verruca vulgaris (common wart), squamous cell papilloma, condyloma acuminatum (venereal wart), and focal epithelial hyperplasia (Heck disease). Among the treatments available for these lesions are cryotherapy, electrosurgery, surgical removal, laser therapy, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). The objective of this research was to determine the behavior of HPV-associated oral
