Focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign lesion of the liver, predominantly affecting women. Its etiology is unknown. Elevated levels of estrogens have been invoked to play a role in the disease. Klinefelter syndrome is the most common sex chromosome disorder, characterized by 47, XXY karyotype, resulting in male hypogonadism and sex hormone imbalance. We present a case of a 25-year-old man affected by Klinefelter syndrome, admitted to our hospital for aspecific dyspeptic symptoms. During admission he underwent: blood test for the liver function and sexual hormonal status, ultrasonography, echo c

Although adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) are both benign liver lesions, adenomas are associated with a risk of rupture and malignant degeneration. This had led to the general recommendation of resection of adenomas. However, FNH rarely ruptures or becomes malignant, and a nonoperative approach has been adopted by most hepatobiliary centers when the diagnosis of FNH can be made with reasonable certainty. There are only two previous reports of rupture of FNH in the English literature; we present a third case of FNH with spontaneous rupture and hemorrhage. An 18-year-old healthy Cauca

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver is a rare benign lesion that probably reflects a local hyperplastic response of hepatocytes to a vascular abnormality. Currently, the natural history of the disease remains largely unknown. We present a patient with FNH of the liver who was followed up for 4 years. A 22-year-old woman with a 3-year history of oral contraceptive use was referred to our hospital in September 1996 for further examination of a liver tumor. A diagnosis of FNH was made using various imaging methods, such as ultrasonography, enhanced computed tomography (CT) scanning, MR i

A case of Focal Nodular Hyperplasia of the liver in a young woman taking oral contraceptives is described. The parenteral administration of an elevated dosage of progesterone in a concentrated period of time is a remarkable feature of this case. The vascular alterations, which consisted of a marked increase of arterial and venous formations, intimal proliferation, diffused thrombosis, and the presence of large blood spaces recalling "peliosis hepatis" are the most salient microscopic findings. We should not exclude the possibility that these peculiar vascular alterations be the real effect of

The increased incidence of liver tumors in women of childbearing age who have been using oral contraceptives for many years suggests an environmental causation. The causative agent may be the steroidal oral contraceptives. Two lesions are recognized: focal nodular hyperplasia and hepatic adenoma. This paper concentrates on focal nodular hyperplasia, with two cases added to the four previously described cases. It is postulated that the estrogen component causes vascular lesions characterized by myointimal hyperplasia and thrombosis, leading to infarct, necrosis, and subsequent nodular hepatic r

Patients with focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) develop benign hepatocellular nodules. FNH most frequently occurs in young women. There are no reports of the onset of FNH in elderly men. We report a case of FNH in an elderly man, whose nodules increased in number and size. The patient underwent surgery for carcinoma of the left renal pelvis at 69 years of age; no liver masses were noted on yearly follow-up contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). Ten years later, CECT revealed a hepatic mass, and magnetic resonance imaging suggested FNH. The nodules increased in number and size in subsequen

We report the first case of an Echinococcal cyst and focal nodular hyperplasia, two usually isolated hepatic lesions, in direct contiguity. The patient presented with right upper quadrant pain and subsequent imaging studies found a cystic and solid lesion. These studies suggested that this lesion was an hepatic adenoma, which had bled forming a hematoma. Pathological examination of the surgical resection showed Echinococcus multilocularis with contiguous focal nodular hyperplasia. Because focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign hepatic lesion the etiology of which is thought to be abnormal arter

Focal nodular hyperplasia is a common benign tumour of the liver that usually does not require treatment. This tumour can be difficult to distinguish noninvasively from other lesions in young patients that may require intervention, such as hepatic adenoma and fibrolamellar carcinoma. The authors report three cases of histologically proven focal nodular hyperplasia and one case in which the imaging features strongly suggested this tumour. These cases illustrate many of the variable imaging features of focal nodular hyperplasia. The authors review the typical imaging findings for focal nodular h

A variety of benign liver tumors associated with the use of oral contraceptives has been described. However, there is controversy regarding the possible relation of focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver to oral contraceptive therapy. Over a ten-year period at the Soroka Medical Center, two young women were found to have hepatic tumors diagnosed as focal nodular hyperplasia. In both cases the hepatic nodules were an incidental finding at laparotomy and were thought to be metastatic tumors. The clinical and pathological findings in both cases are reported. The features of focal nodular hyperpla

Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH) is a rare benign hepatic lesion believed to generate upon a hyperplastic response of the hepatocyte. Hepatocellular Adenoma (HA) occurs predominantly in young women receiving oral contraceptive medication. These two lesions have drawn significant attention throughout the recent years due to their specific clinical and pathological features as well as their challenging management. Although Focal Nodular Hyperplasia is managed conservatively in the majority of cases, it can albeit pose a difficult diagnostic dilemma. On the other hand, Hepatocellular Adenoma can b

A 22 year old woman was incidentally found to have a hepatic small haemangioma-like mass, measuring 1.4 cm in diameter, by an ultrasonographic examination. The mass demonstrated no change in size or appearance for 6 months until the patient began to take oral contraceptives. Eventually, the mass increased to 2.0 cm in diameter after using oral contraceptives for 6 months. A histological examination suggested the mass to be typical focal nodular hyperplasia, and not hepatic adenoma. There was no further change in either size or appearance in the ensuing 1 year after the discontinuation of oral

A 29-year-old female presenting with symptoms of biliary colic was found to have a liver mass compressing the cystic duct. Due to the anatomical placement of the growth, the compressed duct produced symptoms mimicking acute cholecystitis. The mass was diagnosed as focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) upon biopsy. FNH is commonly found incidentally with nonhepatic clinical presentation or during an unrelated surgical procedure. The scope of this paper is to bring awareness to uncommon causes of biliary colic. To our knowledge, there has been one other paper published with FNH being the primary cause

In this case report, a female child of 10 years old presented with pain epigastrium and with sonographic features of acute cholecystitis. Later on, the focal mass in the liver was diagnosed by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination and proved by the biopsy as focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), a benign focal response of the liver and a hepatic mass. Although focal nodular hyperplasia is rare mass in children however, Computed Tomography (CT) scan / Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination are essential for the diagnosis and can obviate the need for the biopsy and unnecessary surgery.

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign hepatic tumor that likely represents a local hyperplastic response of hepatocytes to a congenital vascular anomaly. It is most commonly seen in middle-aged women and is typically a solid mass measuring less than 5 cm in diameter. Most lesions have central scars that contain thick-walled vessels that provide excellent arterial blood supply; hemorrhage, necrosis, and infarction are, therefore, extremely unusual. Characteristic imaging features include a hypervascular homogeneous tumor with a central scar and with both hepatocellular and reticuloendothe

Color Doppler sonographic images of five patients with a total of six lesions of FNH were reviewed. All cases were confirmed pathologically. All six lesions showed increased intralesional flow in comparison to surrounding liver parenchyma on color Doppler sonography. Four of the six lesions showed significant peripheral flow; two of the six lesions showed central flow radiating peripherally from a central vessel. We conclude that increased color Doppler flow may be a characteristic feature of FNH. Increased internal flow has also been reported in HCC and hepatic metastatic disease. Considerabl

We report the case of a 36-year-old patient who was initially managed for gynecomastia. The first biological analyses showed a moderately elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level. After an endocrine etiology was excluded, an abdominal computed tomography scan showed typical focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) proven by biopsy and showing expression of AFP in FNH cells. After follow-up for 24 months, the serum AFP and liver radiology remained unchanged. The association between an elevated AFP and FNH is rarely described in the medical literature.

A 30-year-old woman presented with hepatomegaly and an audible hepatic bruit at 24 weeks gestation. Non-contrast MRI demonstrated an exophytic 12.6 x 7.8 x 12.8 cm mass arising from the right lobe of the liver with a central scar, suggestive of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH). Conservative management included monthly abdominal ultrasound examinations until the time of delivery, to assess growth of the mass and monitor for risk of rupture. Seven weeks post partum the patient experienced severe right upper quadrant pain. A CT angiogram of the liver demonstrated a stable mass with no evidence of
