Food addiction in Bulimia Nervosa: Analysis of body composition, psychological and problematic foods profile.

INTRODUCTION: Food Addiction (FA) has been related with eating disorders (ED), especially Bulimia Nervosa (BN). BN + FA may have different physical characteristics than patients with BN without the comorbidity, such as body mass index (BMI) or body composition, and psychological as emotion regulation. However, the relationship between psychological and physical aspects, connected by problematic food and its influence on body composition, has been barely studied. Therefore, the aims of the present study are. AIMS: (a) To explore the differences in body composition between FA positive (FA+) and

Analysis of antithyroid drug residues in food animals.

In the late 1970s, concerns were raised regarding why antithyroid drugs were being administered to food animals to promote growth despite the fact that they had been implicated as being carcinogenic and teratogenic; the growth promotion process produced an inferior quality meat with increased water retention in the animal's gastrointestinal tract. An increased incidence of aplasia cutis (a characteristic scalp defect) in consumers in Spain was linked to an increased consumption of antithyroid-contaminated meat. Therefore, to protect human health, the EU banned the use of antithyroid drugs in f

Trends of Pretreatment and Analysis Methods for Carotenoids in Food.

Carotenoids are analytically challenging food constituents because their structural diversity, chemical instability, low abundance, and strong matrix dependence impose simultaneous demands on extraction selectivity, analyte preservation, chromatographic resolution, and detection sensitivity. This review critically evaluates recent advances in the pretreatment and analytical determination of carotenoids in food, with emphasis on the physicochemical and matrix-related factors governing method performance rather than on technique-by-technique description. Pretreatment strategies are examined in t

Metabolic Analysis: Tracing Gangliosides and Precursors in Foods.

We describe herein a practical method for analyzing gangliosides in food and in the blood and tissues of mice that have ingested the food. In this method, the oligosaccharide moiety of gangliosides is enzymatically released, labeled with a fluorescent substance, and analyzed using an in-line fluorescence detector in high-performance liquid chromatography. By using a high-performance liquid chromatography system equipped with an amide column that can separate oligosaccharides with different structures, the amount and ratio of ganglioside molecular species in samples can be analyzed. By comparin

Analysis of Aminoglycoside Antibiotics: A Challenge in Food Control.

Aminoglycosides are a widely used group of antibiotics in veterinary medicine. However, misuse and abuse of these drugs can lead to residues in the edible tissues of animals. Due to the toxicity of aminoglycosides and the exposure of consumers to the emergence of drug resistance, new methods are being sought to determine aminoglycosides in food. The method presented in this manuscript describes the determination of twelve aminoglycosides (streptomycin, dihydrostreptomycin, spectinomycin, neomycin, gentamicin, hygromycin, paromomycin, kanamycin, tobramycin, amikacin, apramycin, and sisomycin) i

Toxoplasma gondii as a Parasite in Food: Analysis and Control.

Foodborne infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and foodborne parasitic diseases, though not as widespread as bacterial and viral infections, are common on all continents and in most ecosystems, including arctic, temperate, and tropical regions. Outbreaks of disease resulting from foodstuffs contaminated by parasitic protozoa have become increasingly recognized as a problem in the United States and globally. Increased international trade in food products has made movement of these organisms across national boundaries more frequent, and the risks associated wi

Microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography for the analysis of acrylamide in food.

The influence of microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) operating conditions, such as the type of water-immiscible alcohol, aqueous phosphate buffer concentration, pH, as well as the addition of methanol and 2-propanol, on acrylamide migration has been studied. These parameters have been optimized taking into account the presence of matrix signals, in order to avoid the interference of these peaks in acrylamide determination. The best separations were achieved using a microemulsion consisting of 0.8% m/v n-amyl alcohol, 3.3% m/v sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 6.6% m/v 1-butanol, an

Detection and analysis of animal materials in food and feed.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) belongs to a group of progressively degenerative neurological diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) associated with a variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. TSEs are fatal diseases caused by prions (proteinaceous infectious particle) and are characterized by an incubation period that may range from several months to several years, depending on the host. Because BSE is spread through animal feed, the main strategy for preventing the establishment and spread of BSE is to prohibit the use of proteins derived from ma

Food Insecurity and Mental Health: A Moderated Mediation Analysis.

Extensive research has demonstrated the negative impact of food insecurity on mental health; however, the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship remain underexplored. Using data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey (N = 25,703), this study investigates whether sleep problems mediate the relationship between food insecurity and mental health outcomes-specifically depressive and anxiety symptoms-and whether marital status moderates this relationship. The findings indicate that sleep problems partially mediate the effects of food insecurity on depressive and an
