Food chain aspects of chlordane poisoning in birds and bats.

We have observed recurring chlordane poisonings of large numbers of common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula), European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and American robins (Turdus migratorius) at suburban roosts in New Jersey during the month of July. This paper describes aspects of the food chain uptake of chlordane that account for the periodicity of these poisonings. Chlordane concentrations ranged from < 0.02 to 20.3 microg/g wet weight in 11 soil samples collected from residential lawns and a golf course near one roost. Of the 10 species of insects and soil invertebrates collected from the area,

Molecular game theory for a toxin-dominant food chain model.

Animal toxins that are used to subdue prey and deter predators act as the key drivers in natural food chains and ecosystems. However, the predators of venomous animals may exploit feeding adaptation strategies to overcome toxins their prey produce. Much remains unknown about the genetic and molecular game process in the toxin-dominant food chain model. Here, we show an evolutionary strategy in different trophic levels of scorpion-eating amphibians, scorpions and insects, representing each predation relationship in habitats dominated by the paralytic toxins of scorpions. For scorpions preying o

Phages for biocontrol in foods: What opportunities for Salmonella sp. control along the dairy food chain?

Controlling the presence of pathogenic bacteria, such as Salmonella sp., in dairy products production is a burning issue since contamination with Salmonella can occur at any stage of the production chain. The use of Salmonella-phages applied as control agents has gained considerable interest. Nonetheless, Salmonella-phage applications specifically intended for ensuring the safety of dairy products are scarce. This review identifies recent advances in the use of Salmonella-phages that are or could be applied along the dairy food chain, in a farm-to-fork approach. Salmonella-phages can be promis

Biosynthesis of medium-chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates from pre-treated food wastewater.

BACKGROUND: The escalating global plastic waste crisis, coupled with the challenges of managing high-moisture food waste from industrial processing, has prompted nations worldwide to pursue sustainable alternatives and comprehensive waste-reduction strategies. This study addresses this dual challenge by optimizing medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (mcl-PHA) production from food wastewater (FWW) using Pseudomonas putida through an iterative refinement process, offering a solution that converts waste into biodegradable plastics. RESULTS: In synthetic substrate tests, the highest PHA yiel

MULTIDRUG RESISTANCE IN WILD BIRD POPULATIONS: IMPORTANCE OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

The presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli has recently been reported in wild birds (gulls and birds of prey) that had no apparent exposure to antimicrobials. Little work has been done to assess the role of the food chain in the emergence and spread of MDR E. coli . In this study, we evaluated the presence of MDR E. coli in 29 fecal samples collected from wild birds living in a rehabilitation center (the center receives injured animals found in their natural habitat) and in eight feed samples. In total, 166 E. coli isolates were obtained: 129 from cloacal swabs and 37 from raw

Portable gliadin-immunochip for contamination control on the food production chain.

Celiac disease (CD) is one of the most common digestive disorders caused by an abnormal immune reaction to gluten. So far there are no available therapies, the only solution is a strict gluten-free diet, which however could be very challenging as gluten can be hidden in many food products. Furthermore an additional problem is related to cross-contamination of nominal gluten-free foods with gluten-based ones during manufacturing. Here we propose a lab on chip platform as a powerful tool to help food manufacturers to evaluate the real amount of gluten in their products by an accurate in-situ con

Polystyrene microplastic particles in the food chain: Characteristics and toxicity - A review.

Polystyrene (PS) is a crucial material for modern plastic manufacturers, but its widespread use and direct discard in the environment severely affect the food chain. This review provides a detailed study on the impact of PS microplastics (PS-MPs) on the food chain and the environment, including information on their mechanism, degradation process, and toxicity. The accumulation of PS-MPs in organisms' different organs leads to various adverse reactions, such as reduced body weight, premature deaths, pulmonary diseases, neurotoxicity, transgenerational issues, oxidative stress, metabolic alterat

Detection and traceability of genetically modified organisms in the food production chain.

Both labelling and traceability of genetically modified organisms are current issues that are considered in trade and regulation. Currently, labelling of genetically modified foods containing detectable transgenic material is required by EU legislation. A proposed package of legislation would extend this labelling to foods without any traces of transgenics. These new legislations would also impose labelling and a traceability system based on documentation throughout the food and feed manufacture system. The regulatory issues of risk analysis and labelling are currently harmonised by Codex Alim

Salmonella in the food chain within the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Infections caused by bacteria originating from tainted food sources are a widespread concern due to their large economic impact and detrimental effects on public health. We aimed to explore literature focusing on the presence of Salmonella in the food supply chains of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and to provide an overview of available information concerning health-related issues and the status of salmonellosis in humans in GCC countries. The reviewed evidence underscored a gap in our comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of Salmonella in the food supply of GCC countries. M

Mercury levels along the food chain and risk for exposed populations.

Mercury was not regarded as a pollutant of primary importance until many deaths due to mercury poisoning occurred in the 1950s. More recently, adverse health effects have been documented at relatively low exposure levels, and monitoring data must now be interpreted in this light. The Mediterranean basin has been studied in great detail over the past 20 years because of the anomalous natural presence of mercury. Marine animals of this basin have higher mercury body burdens than the same (or similar) species in the Atlantic. The mercury found in marine organisms is mainly in the form of methyl m

Foraging supply chains: Investigating disaster for improved food provisioning.

Disasters such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war are drawing attention to the provisioning of food during crises. The main concern has been quickly establishing a stable food supply. However, climate change and public health concerns are shifting attention to the critical gap in identifying the minimal considerations that would adequately address ecological disaster food provisioning. A meta-ethnography of 16 disasters in 12 different countries is employed to identify the activities and their supporting strategies that provide benefits to existing actors within food networks. Feed the crop not the soil: rethinking phosphorus management in the food chain.

Society relies heavily on inorganic phosphorus (P) compounds throughout its food chain. This dependency is not only very inefficient and increasingly costly but is depleting finite global reserves of rock phosphate. It has also left a legacy of P accumulation in soils, sediments and wastes that is leaking into our surface waters and contributing to widespread eutrophication. We argue for a new, more precise but more challenging paradigm in P fertilizer management that seeks to develop more sustainable food chains that maintain P availability to crops and livestock but with reduced amounts of i

Food chaining: a systematic approach for the treatment of children with feeding aversion.

Food chaining has been developed as a systematic method for the treatment of children with extreme food selectivity. Food chaining is an individualized, non-threatening, home-based feeding program designed to expand food repertoire by emphasizing similar features between accepted and targeted food items. This chart review illustrates the efficacy of food chaining in treating aversive feeding disorders.

Australian ecosystems, capricious food chains and parasitic consequences for people.

Characteristic Australian ecosystems or environments contain numerous food chains some of which may become capriciously side-tracked or appropriated by humans, with parasitic consequences for people in Australia and overseas. Twelve of 13 arboviruses affecting humans are of wildlife origin and all are transmitted by mosquitoes. In this case, transmission is thus associated with aquatic environments, many artificial. Zoonotic trematode (brachylaimiasis) and cestode (rodentoleposis) infections have been reported from semi-arid environments. Scabies and angiostrongylosis are associated with work,

Stakeholder perspectives of a food redistribution supply chain program to reduce food waste and improve food access for disadvantaged populations in Western Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: Food waste is a major problem that contributes to climate change, while inequities in access to healthy food persist among socially vulnerable populations. Surplus food redistribution initiatives operate at the intersection of waste reduction and efforts to support food access. Our objective was to explore and better understand the perspectives and experiences of organizational stakeholders within the food redistribution system in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured qualitative interviews, as well as field obse

Digital technology innovation and agricultural industry chain resilience: implications for food security.

Food security is increasingly threatened by climate shocks, market volatility, and geopolitical disruptions. A resilient agricultural industry chain is critical to ensuring a stable food supply, yet empirical evidence on how firm-level digital technology innovation enhances such resilience remains scarce. Using micro-level data from Chinese agricultural firms over the period 2010-2025, which comprise 69 listed agricultural firms with 714 firm-year unbalanced panel observations, this study examines the impact of digital technology innovation on agricultural industry chain resilience. The result

Food-chain spirochetes: a unified hypothesis for Parkinson's disease and dementia risk.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia have risen markedly in many regions. While aging, genetics, toxicants, and protein misfolding explain key aspects of pathology, they do not fully account for synchronized temporal trends or pronounced regional heterogeneity in recent increases. This hypothesis and theory article proposes that persistent microorganisms in industrial food systems-particularly biofilm-forming spirochetes in high-throughput poultry processing-may represent an under-recognized upstream contributor via the gut-brain axis. Analysis of Global Burden of Disease and FAOSTAT data rev

Assessing evidence of a potential Salmonella transmission across the poultry food chain.

Enhanced Salmonella surveillance programmes in poultry were implemented in all European Member States, with minimum prevalence targets for a list of targeted serotypes to safeguard food and public health. Based on the Belgian Salmonella surveillance programme and focusing on poultry, the overarching aim of this study was to highlight possible Salmonella transmissions across the food chain (FC). For this purpose, firstly, the prevalence patterns of Salmonella (targeted and the most prevalent non-targeted) serotypes along the FC were described over time. Secondly, the effectiveness of the contro

Short-chain fatty acids suppress food intake by activating vagal afferent neurons.

Fermentable carbohydrates including dietary fibers and resistant starch produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate and butyrate, through microbial fermentation in the intestine of rodents and humans. Consumption of fermentable carbohydrate and SCFAs suppress food intake, an effect involving the brain. However, their signaling pathway to the brain remains unclear. Vagal afferents serve to link intestinal information to the brain. In the present study, we explored possible role of vagal afferents in the anorexigenic effect of SCFAs.
