An analysis of hazard indices based on the transfer factor of naturally occurring radionuclides in herbal infusions.

The transfer factor is an important concept for assessing hazard indices associated with radionuclide intake. In this study, radionuclide transfer factors were determined for the infusion process using gamma spectrometry. For raw herbs, the activity concentration values ranged from (10.04 ± 4.25) to (1565.05 ± 68.25) Bq·kg-1 for K-40, from (<0.93) to (6.84 ± 3.68) Bq·kg-1 for Ra-228, and from (<2.06) to (30.40 ± 3.68) Bq·kg-1 for Ra-226. The transfer factors were found to be 4.96% for K-40 and 23.29% for Ra (Ra-226 and Ra-228). In addition to demonstrating that infusion consumption does not re

[Exposure to radioactivity in the perinatal period following the reactor accident in Chernobyl].

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26 April 1986 Europe experienced increased radioactive radiation by contamination of the atmospheric aerosol and the soil. Foods emanating radioactive radiation were ingested by the population to an increased extent via the food chain. This proportion of radioactive radiation accounted for about 80% of the total irradiation exposure and prompted us to examine mother's milk, amniotic fluid and placenta of newborn in respect of their concentrations of radionuclides I-131, Cs-134 and Cs-137. Due to the short half-life of I-131 an increased concentration of

Assessment of K-40 and Cs-137 radioactivity concentrations and annual effective dose due to ingestion of staple foods in South Korea.

The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) has designated Rice and Napa cabbage, which account for a large proportion of the Korean diet, as staple foods for continuous radioactivity monitoring. Assessing internal exposure from food ingestion is essential for public health and radiation safety. This study evaluated the radioactivity concentrations of these foods and quantified annual effective doses from their ingestion. Samples of Rice and Napa cabbage collected from 15 regions nationwide from 2014 to 2023 by Regional Radioactivity Monitoring Stations (RRMSs) were analyzed for K-40 and Cs-1

The assessment of human exposure to radionuclides from a uranium mill tailings release and mine dewatering effluent.

This study provides an assessment of human exposure to radiation from a river system contaminated by radionuclides of the 238U decay series released through a dam break at a uranium mill tailings pond and by the continuous discharge of dewatering effluent from 2 uranium mines. The in vivo analyses of radionuclides in 6 Navajo Indians who lived near the river indicate no detectable elevations above background concentrations. Dose estimates for inhalation of suspended river sediment indicate a maximum annual 50-yr dose commitment of 204 mrem to the endosteum. Estimates of doses (50-yr dose commi

Radiation hazard assessment of radioactive elements 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K in local and imported sugar in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Natural radioactivity is receiving a lot of attention worldwide due to its essential role in human health. Sugar is a generic term for sweet, soluble carbohydrates, many of which find their way into food. Therefore, measuring natural radioactivity is critical as it has a direct impact on human safety. This research analyzed natural radionuclide activity levels in 22 samples of commonly consumed sugar from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. High-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors are used in gamma-ray spectrometers. Measurements in this study showed that 226Ra activity concentrations ranged from belo

Levels of naturally occurring radionuclides in foods from the first German total diet study.

Although natural radionuclides are always present in foods, information about the levels is scarce. The diet-related exposure to radiation is, however, dependent on the radionuclide content of respective food items. In this study, the levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides lead-210 (Pb-210), uranium-234 (U-234), uranium-238 (U-238), radium-226 (Ra-226) and radium-228 (Ra-228) were investigated in over 200 foods as part of the first German total diet study. Radioanalytical techniques and measurements were applied for determination. The natural radionuclide activity concentrations obtai

Radiation dose and gene expression analysis of wild boar 10 years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant accident.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident led to contamination with radioactive cesium in an extensive environment in Japan in 2011. We evaluated the concentration of radioactive cesium in the skeletal muscles of 22 wild boars and the expression of IFN-γ, TLR3, and CyclinG1 in the small intestine and compared them with those of wild boar samples collected from Hyogo prefecture. The average 137Cs radioactivity concentration in wild boars in the ex-evacuation zone was 470 Bq/kg. Most of samples still showed radioactivity concentration that exceeded the regulatory limit for foods, but th

Characteristics of exposure to radioactive iodine during a nuclear incident.

BACKGROUND: During a nuclear accident, numerous products of nuclear fission are released, including isotopes of radioactive iodine. Among them is iodine-131, with a half-life of 8.02 days, which emits β radiation. For decades, it has been effectively and safely used in medicine. However, in the event of a nuclear accident, uncontrolled exposure can have harmful biological effects. The main sources of internal contamination with iodine-131 are contaminated air, food and water. The most exposed organ is the thyroid gland, where radioactive iodine accumulates via the Na+/I- symporter (NIS). NIS d

Effective doses received by the gastrointestinal tract compartments of adults due to food intake in Egypt.

226Ra, 232Th, and 40K levels in various foods frequently consumed by Egyptians were determined using a gamma-ray spectrometer based on the germanium detector (HPGe). Activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were in the range of < 0.10 to 0.79 ± 0.07, < 0.09 to 0.42 ± 0.04, and < 1.96 to 89.73 ± 2.96 Bq/kg, respectively. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) model was employed to estimate the effective doses received by the different parts of the adult's gastrointestinal tract, i.e., stomach (ST), small intestine (SI), upper large intestine (ULI), and lower large intestine (LLI), due to the

Radiation hygienic evaluation of nuclear fission products (review).

Nuclear-fission products (NFP) are a complex mixture of radionuclides of variable organotropism. Their physicochemical properties depend on the conditions of their formation and age. In a contaminated environment they are a source of external, contact, and internal gamma- and beta-irradiation. Dangerous is the entry of NFP into the organism, especially that of children and pregnant women. In a radiation-hygiene review, the author sums up his own materials and those of other investigators on radiation injuries developing upon the contamination of the skin and penetration of NFP into the organis

137Cs daily intake with the foodstuff in the selected cohort of the village Narodychi 30 years after the Chornobyl accident.

The radiation accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, which occurred on April 26, 1986, led to large-scale environmental releases of radioactivity. Its consequences-radionuclide contamination of soils, agricultural products, wild mushrooms, and berries-manifest even after decades. One of the regions most affected by the Chornobyl accident was the Zhytomyr region (Polissya). The soils of Ukrainian Polissya (North of Ukraine) have high 137Cs transfer factors, leading to corresponding food contamination, especially of milk and forest products. The current study aimed to calculate and analy

An estimate by two methods of thyroid absorbed doses due to BRAVO fallout in several Northern Marshall Islands.

Estimates of the thyroid absorbed doses due to fallout originating from the 1 March 1954 BRAVO thermonuclear test on Bikini Atoll have been made for several inhabited locations in the Northern Marshall Islands. Rongelap, Utirik, Rongerik and Ailinginae Atolls were also inhabited on 1 March 1954, where retrospective thyroid absorbed doses have previously been reconstructed. The current estimates are based primarily on external exposure data, which were recorded shortly after each nuclear test in the Castle Series, and secondarily on soil concentrations of 137Cs in samples collected in 1978 and

Changing incidence of anencephaly in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey and Chernobyl.

The incidence of neural tube defects (NTD) was 2.12 per 1000 births and that of anencephaly was 1.29 per 1000 births when we reviewed the 40,997 consecutive births between 1981 and 1986 in the major maternity hospital in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. There was a significant increase in the incidences of NTD and anencephaly after 1986 to 4.39 and 2.46 per 1000 births respectively (P less than 0.0001; P less than 0.005). Although this might be a coincidence, it may be due to the nuclear contamination of the region following the Chernobyl accident.

Radionuclide characterization and associated dose from long-lived radionuclides in close-in fallout delivered to the marine environment at Bikini and Enewetak Atolls.

Between June 1946 and October 1958, Enewetak and Bikini Atolls were used by the US as testing grounds for 66 nuclear devices. The combined explosive yield from these tests was 107 million t (million t TNT equivalents). This testing produced close-in fallout debris that was contaminated with quantities of radioactive fission and particle activated products, and unspent radioactive nuclear fuel that entered the aquatic environment of the atolls. Today, the sediments in the lagoons are reservoirs for tens of TBq of the transuranics and some long-lived fission and activation products. The larger a

Effects of cooking on radiocesium in fish from the Savannah River: exposure differences for the public.

Understanding the factors that contribute to the risk from fish consumption is an important public health concern because of potential adverse effects of radionuclides, organochlorines, other pesticides, and mercury. Risk from consumption is normally computed on the basis of contaminant levels in fish, meal frequency, and meal size, yet cooking practices may also affect risk. This study examines the effect of deep-frying on radiocesium (137Cs) levels and risk to people fishing along the Savannah River. South Carolina and Georgia have issued consumption advisories for the Savannah River, based
