Ten patients with irritable bowel syndrome were evaluated for food hypersensitivity with skin testing (IgE) and IgG serum antibodies (RAST panel) to common food antigens. Patients also underwent an open elimination diet for 2 weeks followed by a 48-hour challenge of each food that was considered to be suspicious from patients diary, positive skin prick test, and/or positive IgG antibodies. Six patients had positive skin scratch test results and only one patient had RAST IgG food antibodies greater than 3,000 cpm which is a marked increase above normal. None of the patients however had an exace

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of food intolerance (FI) in Dutch 5- and 6-year-old children and its association with chronic ailments with a survey among parents by questionnaire. Based on parents' perception the prevalence of "probable" FI was 3.8%. FI was associated with asthma, wheezing, eczema, hay fever, chronic rhinitis, hives, chronic diarrhoea and hyperactive behaviour. The Dutch research results are commensurate with the findings of a study carried out in the U.K. Parents frequently associate FI with eczema, hives, chronic diarrhoea and hyperactivity. Th

A significant proportion of IBS patients attribute their symptoms to adverse food reactions. Dietary elimination and re-challenge studies support the role of diet in the pathogenesis of IBS. The aetiopathogenesis of IBS is thought to be multifactorial involving an interaction between diet, infection, antibiotics and psychosocial factors. Serum IgE and IgG4 antibodies are elevated in food hypersensitivity induced atopic conditions and a similar mechanism has been postulated in IBS. Increased number of mast cells is present in the ileocaecal region of IBS patients. Once sensitized, they are capa

Type I hypersensitivity has been described as a cause of allergic reactivity to inhalants, injectables, endoparasites, and ectoparasites in food animal species. In addition, IgE is credited with showing some host-sparing effect when produced in response to certain gastrointestinal and other parasites. Recently, the sophistication of diagnostic procedures has increased with the elucidation of epsilon heavy chain sequences, expressed protein, development of chimeric IgE antibodies, and production of species-specific anti-IgE reagents. Application of ELISA and Western blotting has replaced the pa

Food intolerance can be caused by immunologic, pharmacologic, toxic, infectious, idiosyncratic, metabolic, and neuropsychologic processes. Food allergy denotes an adverse reaction to food or food additives in which an underlying immunologic mechanism can be shown. Its incidence in young children is approximately 1.3% and among adults is 0.3%. Parental history of atopy is a significant causal factor. In addition, exposure to common allergenic foods in infancy increases risk. For these reasons, exclusive breast-feeding and maternal avoidance of peanut, egg, fish, and dairy products during lactat

Food hypersensitivity was diagnosed in 14 cats. Clinical signs varied; pruritus (100%), alopecia (64%), and papules (21%) were the ones most commonly observed. Pruritus was localized principally to the head or to the neck or ear region in 42% of the cats. Diagnosis was made on the basis of resolution of clinical signs when cats were fed a restricted ("hypoallergenic") diet, and recurrence of signs when cats were fed their original diet or other food. The most common allergens (on the basis of dietary challenge exposure) were fish and dairy products. Age or sex predilection was not observed, an

BACKGROUND: Food allergy seems to be increasing in Asia as well as world-wide. Our aim was to characterize food protein sensitization patterns in a population of Asian children with possible food allergy.
METHODS: Children presenting to our allergy clinic over 3 years with symptomatic allergic disease and at least one specific food allergen sensitization documented on skin prick testing were included in the analysis.
RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty-seven patients fulfilled inclusion criteria. Ninety (40%) of the positive skin tests were positive to egg, 87 (39%) to shellfish, 62 (27.3%) to p

In order to extend previous investigations of adverse reactions to foods performed at this institution, 68 children, aged 5 mo to 15 yr, were studied. All subjects reported a history of adverse reaction to ingestion of one or more of the 14 foods under study. Sixteen of 43 subjects, 3 yr of age or older, had 22 adverse reactions during 94 food challenges with one or more of the 14 foods. All reactions confirmed were to peanut or other nuts, milk, egg, and soy. Skin testing with 1:20 weight/volume concentrations of food extracts applied by the puncture technique produced a net wheal reaction 3

Food hypersensitivity is reported to play an immunopathogenic role in atopic dermatitis in approximately one-third of children. In 320 selected children with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, 63% of children were found to have food hypersensitivity by double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges. Both IgE-mediated mast cell and mononuclear cell activation appear responsible for the eczematous lesions resulting from ingestion of food allergens.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of information on food hypersensitivity (FHS) among teenagers.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the sensitization rates, perception of FHS, food avoidance, and FHS assessed by means of food challenges among teenagers.
METHODS: This cohort study recruited 757 eleven-year-olds and 775 fifteen-year-olds in the United Kingdom. Sensitization rates, reported rates of FHS, and rates of food avoidance were measured. The prevalence of FHS was established by using food challenges.
RESULTS: The prevalence of reported FHS among the 11- and 15-year-old cohorts was 11.6

Background and objectives: The epidemiology of food allergy (FA) and food-dependent anaphylaxis remains unknown in Colombia. Our aim was to estimate by parent-report the prevalence of FA and food-dependent anaphylaxis in a Colombian population of schoolchildren. Materials and methods: A printed questionnaire was sent to parents of schoolchildren aged 5-12 years old from Medellín, Colombia in order to collect FA-related data. Results: Nine hundred and sixty-nine (969) parents returned the questionnaire with valid responses (response rate, 52.5%). The estimated prevalence rates (95% CI) were: ad

The Drug Allergy Committee of the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology reviewed the allergenic potential of several substances of food origin that are found in the composition of some drugs. Despite recent legislation on labeling, many labels do not clearly state whether the drug contains raw material (active ingredients, excipient, or other manufacturing intermediate) with an origin in any of the substances in the list of the 14 groups of food allergens that are subject to mandatory declaration. The objective of legislation is that the drug package, the Summary of Product Ch

BACKGROUND: Patients with mastocytosis have an increased risk for severe anaphylaxis, particularly to Hymenoptera venoms. These patients may also develop more often systemic hypersensitivity reactions to certain foods. However, this issue has not been systematically investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence and severity of food hypersensitivity (FH) reactions among patients with clonal mast cell disorders (CMDs).
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 204 (age ≥18 years) consecutive patients who presented with confirmed CMD (170 with mastocytosis and 34 with monoclonal mas

Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) or pollen-fruit allergy syndrome represents a mucosal allergic contact urticaria in people sensitized to common pollens, due to IgE cross-reactivity between homologous pollen allergens and various plant foods. It is the most prevalent food allergy, affecting millions of people with respiratory allergies. Usually, symptoms are mild, self-limiting and localized to the oropharyngeal mucosa, although they may sometimes become generalized and life-threatening. Although patients usually recognize the offending foods, diagnosis may sometimes be complicated. Several clinica

Food hypersensitivity (FH) is lesser frequent among adult patients than in childhood. Foods implicated in hypersensitivity reactions vary with sociocultural and diet habits from a geographic place to other. We studied 142 adult patients sensitized to foods, among 7698 patients visited at our Outpatient Clinic. Hundred and twenty patients referred clinical symptoms after consumption of one or more foods consistently. From the latest, 107 patients (89.2%) were atopics (92 of them sensitizes to dust mites) and 54 (45%) referred atopic familiar background. Most frequent recorded symptoms were: urt

Adverse reactions after food intake are commonly reported and a cause of concern and anxiety that can lead to a very strict diet. The severity of the reaction can vary depending on the type of food and mechanism, and it is not always easy to disentangle different hypersensitivity diagnoses, which sometimes can exist simultaneously. After a carefully taken medical history, hypersensitivity to food can often be ruled out or suspected. The most common type of allergic reaction is immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy (prevalence 5-10%). Symptoms vary from mild itching, stomach pain, and ra

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: The possibility of an allergic reaction or an intolerance to additives is frequently suspected by parents, especially for chronic illness with frequent exacerbations such as atopic dermatitis or chronic urticaria. For more than 50 years, potential adverse reactions to additives have been suggested, but to date data are conflicting. The purpose of this article is to provide the clinicians with general information about additives and adverse reactions to them and to suggest a practical approach to children suspected to have reactions to food additives.
