Chemosensory function, food preferences and appetite in human liver disease.

We evaluated chemosensory function, food preferences, and appetite in 88 patients with liver disease including those with hepatitis, cirrhosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and sclerosing cholangitis. Reported chemosensory disturbances were common in the patients with liver disease: over 40% reported recent taste changes, and 27% reported recent changes in smell, compared to only 6% of healthy, age- and gender-matched controls with no history of marked chemosensory malfunction. Compared to controls, a greater proportion of liver patients reported food cravings (47 vs. 17%) and food aversions (33

Food Salience and the Nutrition Transition in Kiribati: Urban-Rural and Socioeconomic Patterning of Food Preferences.

Kiribati is undergoing a nutrition transition as imported foods increasingly compete with traditional staples, yet the cultural patterning of food preferences remains poorly characterised. We analysed 2019 cross-sectional household survey data from 399 adults primarily responsible for food preparation. Three timed freelists captured favourite foods, traditional foods, and the three foods eaten most often. Smith's salience, cultural consensus analysis, hierarchical clustering, and multivariable linear regression characterised food preferences and socioeconomic correlates of the proportions of i

Changing food preferences among a former hunter-gatherer group in Namibia.

The purpose of this study was to identify, describe and conceptualize the present drivers of food choices and preferences of the Khwe San indigenous peoples by considering influences of their historical and cultural contexts. Data were collected in Eastern Bwabwata National Park in Namibia using a range of qualitative methods: semi-structured and structured interviews and free listing. The various drivers of food choices have been clustered into four levels of the ecological conceptual framework. Key factors, found to be driving participants' food choices, were the following: taste, hunger, he

Eww she sneezed! Contamination context affects children's food preferences and consumption.

Does contextual information about disgust influence children's food consumption and subjective experience of taste? Three- to eight-year-old children (N = 60) were presented with two identical foods, yet children were led to believe that one food had been contaminated by sneezing and licking, while the other was clean. When given the opportunity to eat the foods, 5- to 8-year-old children consumed more clean food and rated the clean food's taste more positively; younger children did not distinguish between the foods. The relation between contamination and subjective taste held even among child

Food preferences and desire to eat in anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether eating disordered patients and controls differ in visual analog scale (VAS) ratings of liking and desire to eat various foods and whether ratings differ according to caloric or macronutrient content of the foods. METHOD: Fifty-five female inpatients with eating disorders and 15 controls rated their liking of and desire to eat 50 common foods at admission and discharge using 100-mm VAS. RESULTS: All patient groups rated their desire to eat high-calorie foods significantly lower than their desire to eat low-calorie foods whereas controls rated their desire to ea

Intestinal bypass surgery for obesity decreases food intake and taste preferences.

Food intake was measured in 22 obese patients before and after jejunioleostomy for obesity. Most of the weight loss could be accounted for by the observed reduction of caloric intake. Malabsorption was also present as indicated by increased loss of fat in the stools, and decreased absorption of D-xylose and vitamin B12. A dislike for sweet tastes developed after surgery in most patients. Preferences for concentrated solutions of sucrose and glucose were reduced after patients showed a depression of food intake by a 440-calorie preload which had not been detected before surgery. These studies s

[Transient changes in food preference in a patient with cerebellar infarction].

A 44-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to dizziness and ataxia of the trunk and right upper limb. Brain MRI revealed an acute infarct lesion in the right posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory. In addition to the cognitive deterioration observed in the subacute phase, a change was noted in her food preference-from light-tasting, low-caloric Japanese cuisine, sugarless coffee, and hot drinks to strong-tasting, high-caloric Western cuisine, sugar-rich coffee, and iced drinks. Single-photon emission computed tomography showed hypoperfusion in the bilateral frontal lobes and

The role of sensory sensitivity in predicting food selectivity and food preferences in children with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by involuntary, repetitive and non-rhythmic motor and vocal tics. Despite suggestion that diet may affect tics, and the substantial research into children's diet, eating behaviours and sensory processing in comorbid disorders (e.g. ASD), research in TS is lacking. The present study examined differences between children with and without TS in parental reports of child selective eating, food preferences and sensitivity, and aimed to examine sensory sensitivity as a predictor of food selectivity outcomes in children with and wi

Microbial Protein as a novel ingredient in pet food: A food preference study in dogs and cats.

The increasing demand for protein sources in pet nutrition has driven growing interest in microbial proteins (MP) as viable alternatives to traditional animal proteins. However, their successful incorporation into pet food formulations depends not only on nutritional adequacy but also on short-term food preference. This study evaluated the palatability of dry extruded diets containing 10% microbial protein in dogs and cats using an in-home two-bowl preference test and complemented these findings with independent laboratory characterization to support interpretation of the observed preferences.

Relationships between food neophobia and food intake and preferences: Findings from a sample of New Zealand adults.

Food neophobia (FN) has been shown to be a strong influence on food preferences using primarily small data sets. This has limited the explanatory power of FN and the extent to which it can be related to other factors that influence food choice. To address these limitations, we collected Food Neophobia Scale data from 1167 adults from New Zealand over a 45-month period. Participants also completed a 112-item food preference questionnaire and a self-report 24 h, a 145 item food intake recall survey, and the Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ). As a way of providing a structure to the food intake and

Musical intervention and food preferences in girls born with lower birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Children born after intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), especially girls, show an increased intake of palatable foods in several developmental stages, which likely contributes to their increased risk for obesity later. Recently, neuroimaging studies suggested that musical exposure activates the mesolimbic region, which is also involved in the processing of food rewards. AIMS: We evaluated the impact of musical intervention in mother/infant pairs on feeding behavior during childhood with regard to birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. SUBJECTS: A total of 28 children expo

The relationship between appetite and food preferences in British and Australian children.

BACKGROUND: Appetitive traits and food preferences are key determinants of children's eating patterns but it is unclear how these behaviours relate to one another. This study explores relationships between appetitive traits and preferences for fruits and vegetables, and energy dense, nutrient poor (noncore) foods in two distinct samples of Australian and British preschool children. METHODS: This study reports secondary analyses of data from families participating in the British GEMINI cohort study (n = 1044) and the control arm of the Australian NOURISH RCT (n = 167). Food preferences were as

Food preferences, dieting behaviors, and body image perceptions of elite figure skaters.

The objectives of this study were to determine food preferences, body image perceptions, dieting behaviors, and nutrient intakes of elite male and female figure skaters. Male (n = 23) and female (n = 26) figure skaters completed a food preference checklist, a questionnaire examining their demographics, dieting behaviors and body image perceptions, and 3-d food records. Male skaters had a higher preference (score > or = 6) for grains, fruit, meat, dairy, fats, and sweets. Female skaters had higher preference for grains and fruits. Of the female skaters, 30% considered themselves overweight and

Taste acuity of obese adolescents and changes in food neophobia and food preferences during a weight reduction session.

The relationship between taste acuity and food neophobia, food familiarity and liking has been studied in the context of a residential weight reduction session (WRS; mean duration: 10 months) in 39 obese adolescents. Taste acuity was assessed using recognition thresholds for sucrose, citric acid, sodium chloride and 6-n propylthiouracil (PROP) and supra-threshold perceived intensities for sucrose, sodium chloride and PROP. Food neophobia was assessed by using the food neophobia scale at the beginning and at the end of the WRS. At these time points we used also a food familiarity and liking que

Effects of Multisensory Environmental Cues on Food Craving, Healthy Food Preference, and Stress-Related Recovery.

Emotional eating (EE) is associated with poor dietary quality and weight gain among university students. Therefore, exploring innovative, non-invasive interventions to support healthier food-related responses is essential. While multisensory environments show promise in influencing food-related responses, their effectiveness in managing stress-induced EE remains understudied. Grounded in the Environment-Organism-Health (EOH) model, this study used an immersive virtual reality (VR) platform and recruited 49 Chinese university students. After emotional induction tasks, participants were randomly

From Sustainability Consciousness to Sustainable Dietary Behaviours: The Mediating Roles of Food Waste and Food Preference.

INTRODUCTION: In shaping sustainable dietary habits, the structural dynamics of the food system may play a role as significant as the individual's cognitive processes. This study aims to examine how sustainability awareness among Turkish adults relates to their dietary behaviours and to identify the mediating mechanisms involved in this relationship. In doing so, it seeks to contribute to the identification of potential leverage points within the food system. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 784 healthy adults living in Izmir. The study examined the

The effect of hunger and state preferences on the neural processing of food images.

Visual information plays a key role in guiding food-related decisions. While previous studies have shown that features such as calories and naturalness are encoded by the brain, upon simply seeing the stimuli, it remains unclear how this encoding is shaped by the observer's current state. In this study, we explore the effect of 1) hunger state, 2) task relevance, and 3) current individual preference on the processing of visual food information. Participants (N = 23) underwent two EEG sessions: one after fasting overnight and another after eating normally. During each session, participants did

Difference of the naltrexone's effects in social drinkers by spicy food preference.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in subjective acute effects of alcohol and naltrexone among those who prefer spicy food to varying degrees. Acute biphasic alcohol effects scale (BAES), visual analogue scale for craving (VAS-C), blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and food preference scale were measured in 26 men. Repeated measures ANOVA (2 preference groups×4 time blocks) on the stimulative subscale of BAES revealed a significant group by block interaction in naltrexone condition (N+) (P<0.001), but not in non-naltrexone condition (N-). Furthermore, repeated measures

The effects of phenylpropanolamine on Zucker rats selected for fat food preference.

Treatments of human and rodent obesity frequently involve administration of amphetamine derivatives, much like phenylpropanolamine, which suppress food intake. The Zucker rat is a commonly employed model of youth-onset obesity in which the homozygous genotype manifests hyperphagia as well as other characteristics that parallel human obesity. Using a macronutrient selection procedure, we examined phenylpropanolamine's differential actions in controlling dietary intake, spontaneous open-field activity, and regional hypothalamic neurotransmitter levels in obese female Zucker rats of varying fat f

Food preference and nutrient composition in captive bonobos (Pan paniscus).

Food preference has been studied in a range of Hominoidea in the wild and in captivity, allowing for interspecific comparisons. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) prefer low-fibre, high-sugar foods, suggesting that frugivory and their dietary overlap are a result of their shared preference for the same nutrients. Comparable tests of the nutritional preference of bonobos do not exist. In this study we examined food preferences of five captive bonobos for 23 familiar and ten novel food items. We performed paired-choice food tests, resulting in a clear rank order
